Wii sales top 30 million in U.S.

Gaming

In a short but sweet press release, Nintendo announced that sales of its Wii gaming console have topped 30 million units in the United States. The feat took only 45 months to accomplish which Nintendo claims makes it the fastest selling console ever. USA Today writes, “More than 73 million Wiis have been scooped up worldwide, which puts the console on pace to becoming the best-selling video game device ever. That title is held by Sony’s PlayStation 2, which has notched about 140 million in sales.” Not bad Nintendo, not bad at all.

    Good job Ninty.

I’m actually happy for Nintendo. They took a different innovative approach to gaming and marketed it to kids, women, etc to get a wider audience. Sony is finally getting it together after dropping the ball on PS3 by being arrogant.

Funny, when I was in university I did a marketing case study on Xbox360, and cited some market reports that claimed the Wii would be 3rd in sales behind the #1 PS3 and #2 Xbox360. Seems as though the opposite is true, Wii #1, Xbox360 #2, PS3 #3.

I got a good mark on the paper, but man were those reports wrong, I guess the 50 year old men that wrote them really didn’t understand the market.

No idea how this system does what it has done. I dont know anyone that actually plays their wii anymore and many have sold them on craigslist. I’m actually probably done with nintendo after this console as well. sad cause I was there from the beginning

I agree with u, i bought this system the day it came out, and now its just gathering dust,,,however i will definitely be buying the next Nintendo console, because they will always do things to please the ppl that xbox and Sony never will…i have an xbox and i have threw 3 of them, so i like the reliability of the Nintendo, the same one i bought on release day…i just hope that with the revenue the wii and ds has brought to Nintendo, they will be able to make a console that will be powerful enough satisfy a gamer such as myself.

I bought one day one for the lone reason when Nintendo pushes the boundry you know it will be something to check out. To this day their AAA titles are some of the best gaming experiences around. I still pull out a N64 for Mario.

Now yes as a big gamer the Wii is not my most used system (X360 holds that due to Live) but I’m happy with the games it brought and ALL my family can play so it’s the ultimate social system.

My PS3 is the one that hasn’t been used since GOW 3, Sony just got way to cocky and lost exclusives that made them popular. How long as Gran Turismo been “coming out”?????

The one thing about the Wii, and I’m sure some will agree is that it’s not one of the most used system. Most bought of the “next gen” sure, but I have one and its been collecting dust. It’s cool to pull out Wii sports or SSB when you have friend over but its something I rarely touch outside of that.
I’m not a serious gamer, but the way I look at my Wii is its something that was really cool to have when it came out, but once you got it you’re not sure what to do with it. Nintendo did a great job marketing it, and deserves it.

its not just the 15 montrhs faster thats impressive its the fact wiis build qaulity is second to non and ps2 wqas OFFICIALLY the most complained about returned and second puchused electrical dsevice on earth in history it has terrible build quality (yes x360 even worse i know that ps2s poor record is broken) and wii still managed to do it were as sony classed warranty replaced consoles AS A SALE and we all know millions of consumers had to replace thewre ps2 as they tend to fail just over 12 months old COUGH SONY

that makes these wii numbewrs evenmore impressive BY A HUGE WAY as wii has great build qaulity and isnt replaced loads and nintendo doesnt count replaced as a sale or shiped as a sale so that 15 months is more like 2 years vs ps2 in reality considering SO MANY PS2 SALES were not exactly TRUE sales

    nintendo has owned
