Google to improve Gmail contacts manager

General

Today, Google announced planned improvements to the contacts manager located in its Gmail web-based email client. Google touts the Contacts feature now, “works more like the rest of Gmail” and that they incorporated a ton of user feedback. Improvements include:

  • Keyboard shortcuts (go to Contacts and hit “?” for the full list)
  • Sort by last name (look under “More actions”)
  • Custom labels for phone numbers and other fields
  • The ability to undo changes you’ve just made
  • Automatic saving
  • Structured name fields, so you can adjust titles, suffixes, and other name components
  • A bigger, more prominent notes field

The new layout looks much cleaner and provides more functionality with fewer clicks of the mouse. Google also mentioned that they, “made it easier to get to Contacts and Tasks,” and that you’ll see links to the two in the upper left hand corner of your screen right under the Gmail logo. Hit the read link for the official Google post. Anyone seeing these updates yet?

Instead of Gmail and Google Voice synching the data with each other, Google Contacts should be a seperate application that Gmail, Google Voice, Google Map, and Google Buzz can all use.

Agreed! Making it a separately accesible application would be most awesome, especially with iGoogle.

Finally this new Gmail Contact is live and I can see it on Upper left hand side..
First thing which I did with this new Contact manager is deleted those contacts which was added by Gmail for default./

Gmail made managing contact easy… One more feature which I’m waiting to see from Gmail is Email scheduling feature..

Now if only we can get this working in Android I’ll FINALLY be able to sort by last name on my phone. That’s been annoying me for nearly a year now with my Droid.

Agreed with the other posters that this really should be its own app with a real team assigned to it. It’s now much improved but still has a long way to go.

And now I get to eat crow as all of this is working on my Droid now too and instantly updates between my phone and PC regardless of which one I work from. Very nice Google.

Just got a Samsung Fascinate, learning gmail now. How can I port my contacts from the phone to gmail contacts? So far all I can figure out is how to synch from gmail to phone…
