Bloomberg: Saudi Arabia, RIM close to a deal

General

There is a bit of a soap opera going on in the Middle East between Canadian handset manufacturer Research In Motion and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The synopsis of the situation goes like this:

Today, Bloomberg is reporting that Saudi Arabia is allowing RIM, and wireless providers, to continue providing BlackBerry messaging services to customers and has not communicated another deadline for compliance. As the article reads, “the fact that there is no new deadline indicates they are close to a solution.” The Communications and Information Technology Commission, the country’s telecommunication regulator, has said it wants a system in place that will allow it to monitor BlackBerry communications in order to prevent terrorism and ensure national security. The report says that Saudi Telecom Co. and the two other major wireless carriers are all testing systems that would “avert a threatened suspension of the messaging service.”

Damn, and I thought RIM had a real shot at doing something right!

Yeah right! They want the ability to arrest citizens who talk bad about their government and kick out or hold captive, non-citizens who will likely face prosecution for terrorism while the real terrorists run free. This is one big joke.

The amount of hate and racism surrounding this issue is just amazing. Most of you don’t realize that outside the good old USA some governments are trying to actually prevent terrorist groups or protect their national security specially after having quite a few Israeli operatives assuming European nationalities and using these countries as a play ground. Google offices were raided yesterday in South Korea by the way, let’s see what you clowns have to say about that.

    • Greg Gebhardt

Our president will be doing the same here in the USA, just wait and see!

  • TONY

No one cares about those terrorists. This isn’t news!

Or…. they don’t want to lose the 700,000 customers in Saudi Arabia, and the several hundred thousand in the UAE, and possibly the customers that frequent those countries or do business there. If you owned a business and suddenly a million customers were lost, you’d be doing whatever you could to keep them too.

      No, no I wouldn’t.

No… I’d publicize the request of those governments. Of course, RIM likely is used by terrorrists too. If you are in lala land, you aren’t concerned about terrorrists.

  • Greg Gebhardt

VERY dissapointed in RIM! I wouild give the rag heads the middle finger and leave. RIM becomes a little less secure today for all of us!

Who cares about JihadMobile? I have no intention of ever going to one of those countries. I am morally opposed to their country and thus their theocracy/government.

    • The Robot Devil

I’m sure that you are really going to hurt their economy by not visiting and spending the big bucks you make at the AT&T Kiosk in the Mall.

  • SVELTE

Yeah, seems like RIM is bending over for every crazy Arab country… brings another dimension to the term “RIMjob”.

I can’t be leave RIM is going to do this they never crumble to anyone. I guess like the article says this is a business move. This is where technology security and the finance department but heads and usually the finance department wins seen this many times in companies.
