Skype going public, files for IPO

Business

We bet everyone out there is saying, “Finally.” And if so, we’re right along with you. Skype has just filed with the SEC for an IPO and will be listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange. In terms of revenue, Skype is reporting EBITDA of $115.8 million on $406.2 million in net revenue for the first six months of 2010. In 2009, however, the filed documents report a loss of $368.6 million on revenue of $718.9 million which is when Skype and eBay no longer shared sippy cups.

Seems like good timing. They really need an infusion of money to step up their game.

Fring was able to put the full Skype experience (albeit with slightly lower quality) into the hands of anyone with a smartphone. Surely Skype can do better with 3G established and 4G on the horizon.

Skype has an opportunity to crush the traditional wireless carriers on long distance like it did the wired carriers, making them more of the dumb pipes that they need to be.

I hope they do it, and if they announced that as a plan, I would put my money behind it.

You are exactly right. We should soone see the “phone app” on portable devices. This has already happened on PCs with Skype and it’s only a matter of time befopre this propagates downwards to phones and tablets.

The networks will, as you say, simply be supplying a bit stream to a variety of devices.

Skype looks to be a very good short term invesment with teir current offering. I wish them well.

On the business side Skype did the right thing by not rushing things. They could have filed for this IPO a year ago if they wanted. They can scale their service to virtually any digital device someone can dream up.
Granted no individual traders (myself included) have a chance at getting in at the bottom but getting in at 9:31 or later on the first day of trading my not be too bad from an investment stand point.
The lesson here, focus on your product in respect to your customers. If your product is good, your customers are happy and your business thrives. If your product is not good, your customer go away and your business fails.

    Good work Skype!

Man, skype needs to make an android client ASAP

As popular as everyone seems to say Android is, I would have assumed their was already a Skype client already.

There is but it is verizon only and it won’t make calls over wifi. Skype to Skype calls are free, Skype to land/cell costs plan minutes (it should go over 3g/wifi and not cost plan minutes, only skype minutes).

And yes, reporting positive EBITDA and huge negative income. The Internet IPO heydays are making a comeback! They have duct taped that bubble and are furiously pumping it with air. Looking forward to shorting this dog.

    Took them long enough.
    Good move.
