Apple adding email-based FaceTime calling soon, found in latest iPhone beta

Rumor

You know how we reported on FaceTime probably linking up with emails instead of just phone numbers? It looks like it’s coming true, and possibly as soon as this month or next with Apple’s next iPod-focused event. There is a new option to initiate FaceTime calls from email addresses in the latest iPhone 4.1 beta 3. There’s a shot of the button above basically showing how simple this would be, in theory. No idea how Apple will plan to address multiple devices with the same email address, but we’re sure they’ll figure something out.

Wait. Some girl gave me that number last night. WTF?

  • Flacofromny

So if they introduce an iPod touch with retina display. Back and front camera. I sell my iPhone 4 get the captivate and I’m set. What ya guys think about that?

    • HBB

      good move

    • El Oscuro Secreto

+1, the reason I haven’t bought the new iPhone, I knew this was finally going to happen.

  • 007

    Apple sucks…..

    • El Oscuro Secreto

      You Suck!

    • Parshooter

      No you do

…aaaand I just deleted BGR from my RSS feeds. What’s the point of running a tech blog if you’re consistently 1-2 days behind? When I open my feeds, you guys are always the last to report. It’s usually Engadget, TechCrunch and/or MacRumors if applicable, Gizmodo, and then about a day later, BGR. Seriously, what is the point of running this site if you’re never on time to report?

    • bonesb

And, not directed at you, Trent, most of the comments are bitch comments worthy of third graders at recess. Sad, that.

      • OneTwo

Bonesb, i couldnt agree with you more..thats why i skim comments now and not waste my time reading crap..which most mosts are on BGR unfortunately

    • El Oscuro Secreto

Because of the acquisition. They are being very careful to verify their stories…

    • Toobis

Ummm engadget reported this story at 2:31 today and they have a much larger staff…maybe boy genius was busy having a life for that hour and a half…i suggest you try it

      • Walter Feder-Cohen

Gizmodo posted their article on Aug 5th, two full days before BGR, troll.

      • Reality

How is he a troll? Trolls are people that come in and bash something (i.e. The article or BGR) not defend it, dumbass.

      • http://www.bgr.com Boy Genius

And… I broke the original story on FaceTime calling over email.

Original Exclusive > Posting this story “late” (subjective).

Who the hell cares about facetime?

  • EndHaiku

Uh… Facetime is SIP based… SIP URIs are the default construct for addressing and resemble email addresses by design.

  • El Oscuro Secreto

    True

  • Byron

    Initiate, not initiative. Just saying.

  • WalterSobchak

Oh it is definitely heading to the ipod touch.

  • X Glansburg

I’m getting an ipod touch that I will then tether via wifi to my DX….reliable call/data plus the apps, UI, and video chat capabilities I prefer. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

  • Rio

This will not happend…iPod touch will not get a retina display or a camera in the back because apple knows that’s basically an iPhone 4 without network service…the things I see happening is a front face camera and the a4 chip

  • robert

maybe this is for people that have computers so u can do facetime with i phone 4 and computers and computers to i phone 4

  • Hold up wait! My EVO has super powers!

They could put an ATM in this unit and it’d still be a piece of crap.

  • Chino B

    apple and AT

  • Alex

I’ve never been a fan of the iPod touch (I have a 120gb 6th gen iPod classic) however, I’m curious to see if these rumors come true.

If it indeed has facetime support and a nice display, I might have to pick it up. I could use my nexus one’s wi-fi hotspot capability to use facetime when I’m not near a wi-fi network.

  • Mohammad

    Apple is a fruit.

  • onyxminion

the truth is im not a fan of apple, but im also a hater of m$oft so really, just look at the tech. If its kewl, its kewl. Dont deny it, just hate the company! Just cause a crappy company makes something nice do you have to buy it even, just give the respect for the poor guy they stole the patent from xD

  • Android

I’m not sure how this is possible, as I’ve been accurately reporting that the next iPhone will dual-boot Android. Perhaps Apple can incorporate Facetime into both iOS and Android? They should go with Skype which has the highest quality video images. Facetime quality is most likely sub-par to Skype on Android.

    • lgndz

      yea. no evidence? no way

  • JKingly

    Fuck Apple

    • Android

      Word.

  • Pt

Apple can add whatever new functionality they want. Real people are still waiting for exciting new left hand support.

    • Android

Word-squared, bro. Not to mention dual-boot Android.

      • Android

To all who think I’m joking, I’ve seen it in action. You’ll be surprised at how simple/streamlined it actually is . . . 10 more days.

  • http://eonicsystems.net Eon2010`

I would imagine that when FaceTime is supported by Skype and iChat one would be able to set which devices ring or all of them at the same time in a manner similar to what Google Voice and other telephony systems do.

  • Paula

Who the hell cares about FaceTime? It’s a stupid idea.

    • IronMan

It’s because you are fat Paula, thats why you don’t care. You don’t want your fat face on camera!

  • Simone

    Yah Paula
