iPad propelling Apple retail store business, up 72.8% year-over-year

General

Digital Daily has published an interesting report about the profitability of Apple retail stores. The report states that in Apple’s last quarter — Q3 for Apple — the fruit company’s retail arm brought in $2.58 billion, a 72.8% jump from Q2 of 2009. In a retrospective comparison, Digital Daily notes that $2.58 billion is, “greater than the company’s total quarterly revenue from the second quarter of fiscal 1996 through the fourth quarter of fiscal 2004.” The iPad is being given credit for much of the retail success, the launch has, “generated a 38.7 percent increase in visitors per store, a 52.9 percent increase in same-store revenues, and a stunning 106.3 percent increase in non-Mac revenues.” We’ve heard that Apple retail stores gross more than double (per square foot) than high-end retailer Tiffany’s, and with numbers like this, we aren’t having a hard time believing it.

Glad my recent iPad purchase is helping Steve’s retirement fund.

  • PAPINYC

    Congratulations!
Now what’s the forecasted quota percentage increase for iDuct Tape year over year?

    • Mark

According to reports from Electronista there are 11.6 million Android users. So…… a four inch strip to cover their mouth would mean 46.4 million inches divided by three would account for 3,866,666 feet divided by 180 feet per roll would be 21,481.48 rolls, multiplied by $6.50 per roll would increase sales to $139,628. Just a small percentage of that is needed for the antenna bridge. so I don’t think 3M is going to get to rich off of either.

      • Mark

My bad, divide by 12 not 3, sorry.

  • Android

After sales of the iPad plummet, I predict correctly that Apple will begrudgingly ship the next iPad with a dual-boot Android to increase market share.

  • John Galt

Impressive…and this is before the cash-for-idevices plan is formalized to boost the ‘economy.’

  • TypicalAppleHatingDBAG

Who cares? We all know Apple is going to tank in he next coming months. With the upcoming copies…errr.. releases of the DROIDpad and DROIDpod by Verizon Apple won’t stand a chance. No one really cares about quality. Everyone cares about quantity and if there is one thing Android beats Apple in its being a billion different versions of the same thing.

    • WalterSobchak

Man, I saw a dude playing with one the other day at a bar, pretty darn cool. Now I’m itching for something in the 12-inch widescreen variety. Maybe with a nice ecosystem of apps?
I rarely fire up my desktop, or netbook anymore, do most of my quick answer browsing on my phone with the instant on and longpress search button to speak google search. Its just faster and easier. I could really see myself enjoying the crud out of this form factor.
Don’t care who makes it, I just won’t spend more than the $279 I dropped on this netbook.

  • Frank

Yeah – they’ll never sell…….just wait to see the copycats (aka Android tablets)…..

    Some lead….some follow.

    • DInc

Some lead… and some sit back and watch and improve on shitty designs and software.

      • TheLIp

Some sit back and watch and improve on shitty designs as leaders create the next new market. If the leaders didn’t create it all the people sit on their ass wouldn’t have anything to work on.

    • Steel

Right: Steve leads… apple minions follow.

Then smart people wait for other manufacturers to create a version that uses a real OS, has ports, and can read the #1 internet format.

i.e.: the ExoPc. Betters the iPad in everyway and is the same price. Available in September.

  • Perspective

Wow. Looks like those Android activations really slowed them down. Why aren’t the Android manufactures making billions per quarter? And why isn’t Google hitting all it’s targets? Oh, wait, that’s eight, Google gives it away, and the per-phone profits are weak. Too bad.

    • JJ Walker

Dude give it a rest. You sound like a douche. Do you actually worship Apple? if so thats real sad.

  • Jarrett

God, I am so sick of these Apple non-stories. This company has so many markets in dabbles in:

Computers ( billion dollar business plus)
MP3 players ( billion dollar business plus)
Phones ( billion dollar business plus)
Tablets ( billion dollar business plus)
Ads (soon to be a billion dollar plus business)

Why can’t Apple just be like other companies and have only one or two growth drivers? Why does Apple have to make billions on everything they choose to do?

    • JJ Walker

Same for you man. Dude give it a rest. You sound like a douche. Do you actually worship Apple? if so thats real sad.

      • Jarrett

        Settle down JJ Walker,

Your mom is calling, so walk upstairs and grab that bowl of Roman Noodle soup so your poor mom isn’t stuck in the basement listening you ramble on about the new ROM you flashed.

      • JJ Walker

I’m not the one on here everyday defending Apple. Your the douche. Maybe you need to get a girlfriend and lay off the BGR board.

      • Biscuit Master

wait, so you are here every day reading his defense? Wouldn’t that make you a douche too?

      • Jarrett’s Mom

Why does his mom get special treatment? I always get stuck listening to your whimpers, grunts, and Steve Jobs yelling “You want to know what its like to be ‘jailbroken’ !!! ” when he comes over for playtime.

      • Mark

And by the posts I read, Android fans are not worshipping Google. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

    • WalterSobchak

I can’t tell if it is emotional or financial investment with you dude?

      • Jarrets Boyfriend Mr. Jobs

I’m pretty sure its mostly physical. *wink* *wink*

      • Jarrett

Just proving a point each time I post. It reminds me of the “Fanboys” pissing and moaning about Microsoft’s dominance for so long. Microsoft got what they got because they managed their product very well for a very long time.
People hate Apple for no reason than just hating Apple. That is suppose to be accepted. Then again, when someone points out how retarded people are for hating a “corporation” they get all butt hurt about it. Use what you use people. Just because you use a second to market product doesn’t mean it isn’t a good product. Android is good, people don’t buy products that are not good. Having the second best doesn’t mean you have the first place loser, although most of you act like it.

Grow some confidence in your choice of items to use. Nothing worse than someone hating the winner of the race. Look, eventually you will have enough phones in the race to pass by Apple. Currently you are getting close. There are 70+ Android devices around the world. Certainly once that reaches 100 Android will start outselling Apple’s iPhone ( not 100 models, just 2). Of course, that is if Apple doesn’t increase manufacturing (which they will) and if they don’t release the iPhone on other US and China carrier (which is certain).

Look at the pluses to being number two.

        1. You don’t have the curse of going to a local retailer and being able to choose from hundreds (if not thousands) of products that all work seamlessly with you device.

        2. You can download wallpapers that strips your contacts from your device and sends it to China.

        3. You get to watch “new” Android devices ship with either 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 and if you are really lucky 2.2 (or it will be available within nine months.

        Cheers

      • Ernie

Well said Jarrett. These guys will cheer the devil if it’s going against apple. Heck they think apple is the devil. They cheer htc a taiwanese company over an American success story just because it’s apple. They never give apple credit and most say apple has never ever build a good product. Which I find interesting since their god google has standardized on macs. Anyway, well said jarrett.

      • WalterSobchak

I assume you 2 drive fords over hondas?

      • Ernie

And what if I do moron. My point is that you hate apple and you’ll cheer for the devil if he’s going against apple. Where’s the logic there? What did apple or the 34000 people that work there ever do to you? There’s no logic in your stupidity.

      • WalterSobchak

My stupidity? You believe in the devil.
I assume you believe in santa and the easter bunny and pots o gold at the bottoms of rainbows?

      • Giorgio

Ernie does have a point. Some of these fanboys go a little too far. I’ve said it in other articles. They act like either:

A.) Someone committed a crime against humanity to them personally therefore they have some adolescent vendetta against them; or…

B.) One company or the other personally pays them seven figures each time they post in favor of said company (or against the other company).

This goes for iOS vs Android, AT&T vs Verizon; etc, etc.

What kind of adrenaline rush does it give you people when you post you’re worthless biased opinion? Better yet, what does it positively contribute besides affirming to everyone else that you’re a certified tool?

      • Mark

I drive a Chevy over a Honda, as a matter of fact, I will push my Chevy to where Im going before buying a Honda. And yes I do realize Honda make good, but I am still gonna support the good ole USA over a foreign country WHENEVER possible.
Kudos on the post Jarrett and to Ernie for backing him up.

      you forgot a couple.

Must be between ages 5 and 17.

Must be on your parent’s Verizon family plan.

Must downrank anyone likes Apple products.

Must uprank anyone who likes Verizon or says the word DROID.

Must bash At&t in favor of Verizon. Verizon does no wrong.

      • WalterSobchak

        Are these the real T.O.S.?

      • Ernie

It’s about time adults started commenting here. Must of these fandroids are real kids. Heck look at papinyc. This guy must be 5 years old.

      • WalterSobchak

He even attacks us fandroids that don’t use an evo.
I think we are all tired of his iDuctape comment

      • Ernie

No. I think we are all tired of your immaturity. It’s ok that you’re not that smart. It’s not your fault. It’s the genes.

      • Giorgio

        @ bringit and Biscuit Master

        Classic!

  • TheLIp

Apple is king, people should just get over it. everyone resents Apple because they come up with new ideas that are hits. You can say what you want but what products people buy declare the winners. Apple invents , everyone else just copies.

    • Hmm

It’s called marketing. Apple is only there today because they played the “you’re cool if you buy our product” card.

Take the Apple hardware and software and replace the Apple logo with the Microsoft logo: people won’t buy the products anymore. Strange huh?

Oh, and Apple wants you to believe it invents… so you think it’s an amazing company and keep buying their products.

      • Ernie

Are you suggesting that google doesn’t do the same thing? Does google have the best product in all their businesses?no, but they’d like you to believe they do and guess what? You believe it! Because you’re a fandroid.

      • WalterSobchak

Truth be told this whole thing is fun…
Its the new coke vs pepsi
“Drink coke, pepsi sux!” “Drink Pepsi, Coke sux”
Both sides whisper “as long as they aren’t drinking water…. mwahahahahaha”

      • Mark

        Marketing my ass !
I have been using Apple products since the mid 80′s. There was two decades that went by with little to NO advertising. And yes back then Apple was hated as much as they are today. Apple has been succeeding off an ongoing Halo effect from a great product. The iPod. Their computer market is growing due to the ecosystem of everything just working, and working well together. Thats the first question out of any ones mouth when buying a product…….

“Excuse me sir, will this work with what I have at home ?”

No one gets it, not even Apple Fanboys. Apple went after one thing……the home market. And that one question is what they are building off of……… In addition, they ‘ always invent….. they take good products and make them better with ease of use. Apple spend more time picking apart its own product trying to male it as simple as simple gets. Computers are to make life and work easier and more productive.
I’ll be willing to bet if you took 25 people that have never seen or heard of either products and handed them an iPhone and a Droid, then ask them to complete a simple task, the iPhone comes out the winner.

  • PAPINYC

    @Ernie
Actually, I’m 4 and already pottie-trained and, therefore, I’ve no need for Duct Tape [anymore].
    :)

    • Ernie

Debatable. But that’s ok. You’re like an ant. Totally unaware of the world out there. But it’s ok. I don’t need the duct tape so I can use it to cover your mouth and bind your hands so you don’t sound so childish in these blogs. Guys like you give fandroids a bad rep.

  • wanderer

Once again, another fandroid/hater infestation of a positive apple post. Must be tiring constantly making predictions of Apple’s downfall and reading its success at the same time. Hey, android is great too, just enjoy your one of several android versions phone. Take a break and for once go to your own postings to sing praises of your “can do nothing wrong Google” and if you truly believe that, I happen to know swampland in Florida you might want to buy.

    • WalterSobchak

How many times you gonna drop that swampland in Florida GEM?
I’ve got some ocean-front property in Arizona in which you might be interested.

  • Jason Diaz

Apple up 72.8% year over year.

Android UP 886% quarter over quarter :)

    • Giorgio

Google’s retail arm was up 886% quarter over quarter. I didn’t even know Google had company owned retail locations…

      Hmmm….

    • Mark

And that 72.8% is still more head counts then the 886 %, what a fucking shame

  • Smokey

Still have a job? Keep buying foreign! Keep buying HTC and samsung droids. It’s better than your American company called apple, right?

    • Giorgio

Seriously, is this really going to turn political?

      Lame…

    • Killah Kyle

Just like how you should support our US car companies like gm, ford, and chevy who exported a bunch of their jobs to foreign countries? And how we shouldn’t buy cars like hyundai, nissan, and toyota who have exported their factories into the US?

Just because the company is from the US doesn’t mean they have the better interest of the country and its citizens. Just like Apple they care about the profit they can pocket. Which is why Apple products are mass produced in china.

      • Monchito Bumanlag

That’s why this country is where it is now! Exactly my point.

      • Mark

Stop buying the imports and watch how fast they shut things down in this country.

  • Killah Kyle

Because technology for the stupid is our future

  • Smokey

The whole country is shutting down now, idiot!!! Where the f*ck have you been the last couple of years?

  • Smokey

America just can’t compete! Why would a company pay american worker $20 an hour if they can go to china and pay a worker $2 an hour? Government needs to impose much much bigger tax on imports so we could keep the jobs over here and keep that higher pay for the workers. Free trade is not the way to go. Stop buying foreign!
A few more years when you don’t have a job anymore you’ll understand.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571544594 Raj Jani

      To “America just can’t compete”,

Hello, this article is on Apple and you can’t get more American than that. Workers in Apple Retail Stores in the US cannot, and will not, serve Apple customers in China. However, increased revenues from Chinese sales will result in an increase in Apple’s bottom line in the US. Enjoy the fresh aroma of the coffee. Nothing can beat it:-)
