MeeGo In-Vehicle Infotainment system prototype gets videoed

General

Several weeks ago, we reported on the GENIVI Alliance’s decision to use MeeGo as their in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) platform. It seems as though a prototype of a MeeGo IVI system has made its way onto YouTube, and we have to say, it looks… interesting? The MeeGo powered system videoed is basically a fully functioning Linux system with a scrolling touch-interface built on the Xfce4 environment; complete with a shell terminal and file manager. The system is also seen running Mozilla’s Fennec browser, displaying navigation maps, and playing media. It obviously has a long way to go, but it is a step in the right direction! We’ve got the video ready for you after the break.

“we have to say it looks… interesting.” Uh what? What video are you guys watching? This thing looks like a heaping pile of crap to me at the moment. I lost count at about 100 how many times the guy demoing the thing had to re-click various sections to get it to register. If this is the future of in-vehicle infotainment, then God help us.

Agreed, I can see these flying out windows on the highway in due time.

If not causing crashes from input error lag, from smashing into other traffic after being heaved for all its worth.

Wow … you guys are out of touch with MeeGo. Come over to the forums and see what is really going on.

First .. the IVI OS has been released. Second, what you are seeing is a person running the IVI OS on an O2 Joggler. It’s a device sold only in the UK. It even says that on the YouTube title. The device is in no way a ‘prototype’, it’s just a hacker having fun with a digitial calendar that has MeeGo IVI installed on it now.

I installed Meego on my netbook and it was pretty terrible, wifi only connected to networks with no encryption and hardly stayed connected for more than a few minutes. When it was connected, none of the apps worked, Chrome crashed every time and even the native apps wouldn’t function. For being a ‘simplified’ operating system it looked and acted more like something Twitter would make. Fail Whale ftw

Congratulations, a whole 6 frames per second throughout the UI! That’s 3X the fps in the demo video months ago of MeeGo running on a mobile phone. At this pace we should expect a full 11fps by 2012.
