Unknown RIM device gets green-lighted early this morning, BlackBerry Torch 9800?

mobile

Yesterday, we saw the mysterious “Hero Fixture Launch Kits” that began arriving at AT&T stores, and today — a day on which RIM and AT&T plan to reveal some new hardware – the FCC has approved an unidentified, unnamed BlackBerry handset. We’re only given the customary stenciled outline of the device, but we’re betting the farm that this is the BlackBerry Torch 9800 slider phone. The phone has a quad-band GSM radio, tri-band UMTS radio with support for the 850 MHz, 1900 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, Bluetooth, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. One thing is certain, we won’t have to wait very long to see what this puppy is. Make sure to check back here at 11:00 AM EDT as we’ll be reporting live from the event.

Day late, dollar short. CNN Money has an article saying ‘can RIM keep up’. Without business, they’d be in the toilet with consumers.

    • OneTwo

Without the business sector thats indeed what i think too..no ones counting them out but in the consumer market i think they are going to sink beyond recovery..Without a good appstore and the same looking os and phones i think the business side is going to be there saving grace..

    • MONOPOLY MAN

Without Emo fags, Apple’s iPhone division would be out of business, and without with 40 year old virgins, there would be no Android market.

  • Moe

Don’t declare RIM done just yet…

in 1995 all the “experts” declared apple death, and look, Apple has passed microsoft as the number 1 tech company.

    • Moe

sorry guys I mistyped, I meant to type:

Don’t declare RIM done just yet…

In 1995 all the “experts” declared apple DEAD and now Apple has passed microsoft as the number 1 tech company.

  • Jimbo

    Max,
U really must be stupid. Rim is predominately consumer these days, wake up.

    • OneTwo

      No they are not..

      • Jarrett

        @ Jimbo,

Come on, you were joking right? Tell everyone you were joking so they will attempt to take you serious on your next post.

      • crazylegs

Jimbo is actually correct in that roughly 80% of new subscribers over each of the last few quarters are consumers. These are just facts that the company itself discusses on the conference calls.

  • phooboy

pure B.S the consumer market is not stable .. and never will be RIM is doing this right. The new Release will be worth it, its never too late to release a good product. The time to release it, is when you are ready.

RIM is the Market Leader for a reason, Quality assurance unlike some other companies we know.

    • walt

Quality assurance like the previous Bold models that spent more time on Edge than 3G even with full signal? The same Bold model that required frequent reboots or it would just do it all by itself? The same quality assurance that brings multiple people into my store each week with the dreaded “all your software is now gone including the OS” error?
      Yeah, it’s top notch.
To quote the Talking Heads….same as it ever was….

      • Wow

Your answer tells us a lot on your actual knowledge of how cellular networks work…

      • MONOPOLY MAN

They spent more time on EDGE because everyone unlocked them to be used on T-Mobile, ya ding-a-ling.

  • anthony

RIM supplying the same model with a different name for years

    • rederikus

Hello, this is planet earth. Where have you been hiding?

    • Moe

So is apple… Ipod touch, Iphone and now Ipad (a big ipod touch)

    • RealDeal

New form factor and new OS, how is this the same model?

    • Hmm

Apple is worse than RIM in my opinion. They release the same hardware with minor changes, same applies to software. At least RIM has a variety of devices and prices. Apples doesn’t.

      • anthony

all im saying is i cant remember the last time i was wowed by RIM

  • JHUK

I am hoping its the Torch (hoping they’ll come up with a better name though)

I will be replacing my iPhone 3G as soon as I can get it

    • OneTwo

who cares what its called it wont be stamped on the unit itself anyway..Just Blackberry and att..

  • Terry

Is this the Magnum – :P

I might have to go back to RIM if this is the phone that I am thinking it is.

    • phooboy

this phone is going to kick ass .. have no fear :) I have seen the videos .. the 6.0 OS is great

      • Terry

I was BB –> iPhone –> BB –> iPhone –> Android –> Palm Pre Plus (so far my favorite, the WebOS is great)

I will wait and see what this device is. I have been wanting a BB like this since I heard of the Magnum

  • Chris

    Question:

First of all what a slap in the face when a canadian company ignores its homeland for a product launch!
However, I’m still interested in said product. Should I upgrade my 3G to the iPhone 4 at $159 or wait for the new BB and risk having to pay more than $159 for said BB and possibly the iPhone too?
$159 is the intro price for contract breakers such as myself. Expires sept 30th on Rogers.

    • Terry

Don’t they usually release new products in the US before anywhere else?

      • Hmm

Some products made by RIM were launched in Canada before the U.S.

  • OneTwo

I recently ditched att and I4 for the Droid x on Verizon and with its awesome call quality and reliability it got me thinking back to how good my blackberry bold call quality was and how it performed as a ACTUAL phone first and everything else second, i hope the Torch is a bang up phone before anything else..alot of these companies have lost site of how to make a great phone with good call and RF first..

  • BigBoy

It has to be the slider. If you look at the drawing the battery is on the upper half of the back, meaning they’re leaving space at the bottom half for the keyboard and other PCBs.

  • Max

RIM could bring back a 1987 brick phone and the fanboyz would eat it up as ‘new’. Their data is so special they need to make sure nobody ever sees it. See, they’re all geniuses and millionaires, not the average joe working 9-5 making 80k, tops. Riiiight.

    • Billy

Why is it that if i go read the iPhone forums, Blackberry fans aren’t in there trolling and whining about the iPhone? So if your iPhone or whatever you use is so good, go read about. Leave.

  • Geoffrey

I am just waiting to see if I have to buy a new, expensive phone to enjoy the new OS. If so, I’m going to go iPhone.

Bottom line……Blackberrys are not fun like Android or Iphone. Then again they weren’t meant to be fun until Storm. Now people expect Blackberrys to be like Android or Iphone so RIM shot themselves in the foot by not making their touchscreen OS different than qwerty devices. As long as the OS for touchscreens look the same like OS5 or OS6, people will hate it. Who wants a black and white OS? No one.

  • http://bgr iwant9930

It is the slider and it will hit verizon first if I am not mistaking. I am one of the consumers of blackberry for the past 6-7 years. however I have been with sprint the whole time so it has beena rough ride. the 9800 is the model number and it was even on the news this morning. I really want this phone and hope it will hit sprint soon and become maybe the flagship devise or atleast comparible to the evo in quality and os.

RIMM 9800 torch is an Android-killer but not an iPhone killer
