Saudis to block BlackBerry data service August 5th

Security

Coming on the heels of the United Arab Emirates announcement, the Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (SCITC) has asked wireless companies in Saudi Arabia to stop BlackBerry service beginning on August 5th. CNN reports that the Saudi government is claiming, “the manufacturer of the devices [RIM] couldn’t meet the regulatory requirements of the commission and it is not in accordance with the regulations and conditions of licenses issued to service providers, at its present state.” The mandate will apply to both business and individual BlackBerry users. Saudi officials claim they are, “asking for exactly the same regulatory compliance — and with the same principles of judicial and regulatory oversight — that BlackBerry grants the U.S. and other governments and nothing more.” RIM has not officially commented on the SCITC’s decision.

Sticking to the tech issue, I personally believe these countries(UAE, KSA & India) are trying to get access to BB servers because US and UK governments have already got access to them so they’re asking for the same. I am all for privacy, but BB cannot have double standards, either they share data with all governments or they take a tough stand and don’t share any data with any governments(and risk loosing their biggest markets).

PS: And I think the picture is inappropriate. Its a holy site for Muslims all over the world including the US, and is not typically representative of Saudi Arabia.

bizmark03, please learn the BES/NOC architecture/security before looking ignorant. Not one govt has access to this data.

I don’t want to get political, but the fact that there is an option for me to comment implies that i can express my views, if you have so much of a problem with me saying what I think, maybe you should start a gadget/tech blog and let me know so i can make sure i don’t go there post some comment that you may not like to read.

Saudi Arabia has a council that sits there and specifically ensures the latest decision they make is even dumber and unbelievable than the last one..some other examples of stupid rules and laws enforced successfully include..Camera phones weren’t allowed for a while..the internet is filtered to the point it barely works (the funny part is people still find what they’re looking for)..so it comes as no surprise then this latest decision to block/ban the blackberry service has been a huge hit amongst the decision makers because it will cause huge sums in lost revenues for the carriers as well as a tremendous hit to the hundreds of cell phone stores surviving largely on sales of blackberry handsets not to mention the public that has no right to say anything about this entire issue and will continue to be suppressed. I mean the carriers have not even been kind enough to let their users know there will be changes in service instead continue to promote the services..the bb service has become terrible to the point where its barely working at this moment.

Lets hope the SCITC and the board of idiots behind the decision making don’t end up finding this message while prowling the internet for new things to ban and block..because neither do i want to lose limbs nor do i want my head chopped off for criticizing the idiotic decision makers.

I actually agree with you Bizmark.

Before getting all the details, my first thought was “those countries and their control-freak issues”; but now, after learning that US, UK and other governments have made RIM give them more access to their data than other governmetns, I completely agree that RIM is in absolutely no position to be bitching about it when they have already granted access to comply with stupid government requirements in other countries. Is either everyone or nobody.

How bout ANDROIDS and iphones they should block them too if their just going to block BB cause they all have messaging software in them also. Then they should just banned phones completely from their country.
