AT&T BlackBerry Torch 9800, $199 with two year contract, available August 12th

General

AT&T has just announced pricing for the Blackberry Torch 9800, the device will retail for $199 with a two-year commitment to Ma’ Bell; putting it in the same price bracket at the Samsung Captivate and 16 GB iPhone 4. You can purchase the new handset starting August 12th at AT&T company owned retail stores or online. What do you think so far? Did RIM cook up a winner?

was that an iphone 3gs you posted from?

because as far as i know its .3 inches bigger and has a resolution smaller than the BB torch.

sure its nothing like the evo 4g but then again, i can probably count all those high resolution mobile phones like the iphone 4 on one hand…

It certainly isn’t mainstream just yet…

i think it will sell well, specs deff not the best out there but a nice step for Rim. the webkit browser was what i wanted to see upgraded the most..My blackberry addict friends are rejoicing over this release..Not for me but its good to see Rim mix it up alittle over that played out Curve line

I can’t wait for this to come out on T-Mobile. Hope AT&T doesn’t have a long exclusive contract on this.

i’m sure AT&T does/will…. look at the Storm (ignoring the fact that no other carrier or customer really wanted it ;) , it stayed on VZW…. even after iteration #2… so it’s *possible* that the 9800 NEVER leaves AT&T… THAT would SUCK :(

      • KonradT

Yes it would. But I heard many rumors that it should be coming to T-Mobile as well. Just hope it’s in like 3 months. Same as the exclusive period for the Bold 9700 on T-Mobile.

well looking at this phone I can say it looks okay but it is really up the person who will use it how they will feel about it I have used blackberrys in the past and they were okay lets just stand back and see how it goes it might do good it might not.

Ill be upgrading my 10 line biz account from 8310 curves to this device. Way to go RIM!

It just looks like RIM is getting tired… as a company.

Nothing fresh or inspired here, and I own a BB so I’m not just taking a pot shot.

I’m not a BB user, but I support and respect RIM for their innovation and legacy, but while I’m happy for this device and while I hope it does well, it looks like it’s about a year to a year and a half behind spec wise. Hopefully this isn’t their overall flagship device, and just their flagship device for AT&T. Maybe Storm 3 will have better internals and a better and higher resolution screen? At those specs, it’s not much more powerful than their current offerings, except for the fact of it being conveniently having a slide out querty and a mutli-touch capacitive touchscreen. Good job RIM, but ahhhh…. I hate to say it… maybe a little too late compared to stuff like Incredible, Droid X, Evo 4G, and upcoming Epic 4G? (Yes, obviously I’m only naming CDMA/Wi-Max devices running Android…sue me! LOL) Good job, overall RIM! Seriously! You needed this a long time ago, but better late than never.

RIM you let us down! To release this on Verizon is a slap in the face for every Verizon customer that stuck with you. I guess I will have to go get a Droid since I am not leaving Verizon.

  • Ankhor

Well IDK about the phone leaving ATT as the phone was made by RIM and ATT so this maybe an EXCLUSIVE
