AT&T mystery retail displays contain BlackBerry Torch 9800

Retail

Just a quick follow up to a post we wrote up last night. The mysterious cylindrical displays that were showing up at select AT&T stores across the country were in fact for the newly minted BlackBerry Torch 9800. There isn’t much else to report, but we thought we should close the loop. Anyone have a local AT&T store with one of these bad boys setup?

People better not pay 200 for this. Go to wirefly.com when it comes out and I’m sure you’ll get it much cheaper and if you wait a couple weeks, it will be free like all the other blackberry devices. Even the Captivate was 149 w/ free car charger and overnight shipping on launch day at wirefly while 199 at AT&T.

By December I’m betting the Torch is $99 or less, and I bet that’s planned hence the lower bill of materials with the slower processor and lower resolution. RIM have consistently said their focus is the 90% of handset buyers who aren’t yet using smartphones. You don’t hit the sweetspot of that market by adopting the fastest processor and greatest resolution. If you did there would be more Porsche’s on the roads than Camry’s. So RIM’s share of the smartphone market will continue to decrease, but their share of the overall handset market will continue to increase IMO.

Yeah especially when over at VZW buy 1 get 1. So while a person paid 99 bucks they got 2 blackberries and it looks like they sold 2 devices when they just gave away one and sold one at a discounted price. Their business model is the exact opposite of Apple’s. RIM just wants to flood the market with a lot of devices and get people to use them even if they means them giving them away while Apple says “we’re not giving you jack, want our product you gotta pay for it”. So they sell less handsets overall than RIM but the profits they make are ridiculous.

No, the manufacturer sets the device price to the carrier and the carrier sets the price to the consumer. The fact that carriers make a whole lot more $$$$ from the BlackBerry data plan allows them to more heavily discount a BlackBerry and still be confident that they will recover their cost based on the two year data plan agreement.

Was this the display thing that BGR was having heart palpitations over, thinking it was iPhone related?

I will guarantee this will be $149 within 1 month. And BOGO in 2 months.

Dislike all you want, BB idiots. Your phones have worse resale values than Yugos.

If resale value is the biggest thing you care about in a smartphone, you might be better off buying a Yugo to make a phone call.

If the phones can’t be futuristic or even current for that matter, the displays for them might as well be. Still, enjoyed my Blackberry Tour, but also enjoying my Incredible. I miss email, but love the applications and web browser. You can’t have everything.

RIM will soon announce the latest model, the 1920, coin operated BB rocking OS 6. Carrier unknown or discovered.

at my walmart we got a dummy for the bb torch today its like a little smaller storm with no clickable screen with a slide out bold 9700 keyboard but the screen part is super thin pretty much imo the best bb out so far but only if its like under $100

I just can’t believe this. AT&T supports BB and Windows. yet I see a nice colorful display for the BB Torch which I’m definitely not getting. I’m just piss off at AT&T for not supporting ANDROID device and not even getting any phones from ANDROID besides the ones that’s all ready out.
