Microsoft COO: Windows Phone 7 to Europe in October, U.S. in November

mobile

If you are anxiously awaiting the release of Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner has some good news for you. In a presentation regarding WP7, Turner let go the closest thing to a U.S. release date we’ve heard thus far, November. Turner said, “in the October timeframe and the November timeframe, October likely across Europe and November likely across the U.S. we’re back in this game.” Prior to this discovery, the closest go-live date given by Microsoft was a three month window they were referring to as “the holiday season.” November, with its thirty days, is certainly more welcomed and specific. We’re due to see handsets from Dell, HTC, Samsung, LG, and ASUS on or shortly after launch, so we say… bring on WP7!

    Who would be anxiously waiting for Microsoft? You have IOS4 and Google. Microsoft???? They’ve missed the parade.

    • Greg

      I guess I’m old fashioned, but I think the more options and competition, the better for the consumers.

      • some internet dude

        yes options are better, but when options are lacking in basic functionality, no multitasking, no flash in browser, no real app market, etc etc. Well then its no real option is it. Please MS kill this like you did with the KIN, and start making Windows what it was a nice OS.

      People can always make a comeback. Motorola did.

    • Chut Pata

      That would be the phone companies. They would like to see MS do to phones what they did to computers. Bring a bigger resource hog each time, and consumer will have no choice but to buy a bigger and faster phone. What is bad for the consumer, is good for Corporate America.

        Kind of like what Apple currently does?

        iOS 4 runs sooooooo well on my 3G.

    • boogalooboy

      So thats it right? No other mobile OS is allowed to be sold apart from apple and google’s? I mean if we dont actually want to use their products its just tough luck, right?

      Sheesh, where do you fanboys go for this kind of brainwashing?

    • Dustin

      I am waiting for WP7 eagerly. I really dislike Apple and Google myself so don’t want either. I have a Blackberry Tour right now which is easily the worst phone I’ve ever owned. So, that leaves WP7, and it does look really good.

      Plus, I live an hour from MS main campus, so I gotta go with the local guys!

    Ive had Windows mobile phones for the Past 3 years. I honestly dont have the enthusiam for Windows mobile anymore. Granted WinMo is better packaged and more refined than Android..but its just too bland for me. Maybe some 4G phones with HTC Sense on them may have me take another look…..but im certainly not holding back on buying an Android phone hoping WinMo finally gets with the times in November.

    Wont they be competing with 1.5 and 2Ghz Android phones by then? And Gingerbread? Not to mention the Last 4G phone pushes for the Year.

    • Bob

      It’s NOT Windows Mobile, it’s Windows Phone 7. New operating system based on a newer generation embedded device kernel (Windows CE 6.0 / 7.0) and most GUI end stuff running on Silverlight. Windows Mobile 5 / 6 / 6.5 all run on Windows CE 5 / 5.2. Try it out on October 12.

      • some internet dude

        A skin on top of old code = fail. its been real Windows phone 7. dumb name by the way.

  • adrian l.

    3 phones,

    Extreme android/sprint fanboy much? Windows can and likely will make a come back. Have you used the new OS yet? I haven’t, I’m on android myself, but am not attached and would gladly give WPhone a shot.

    I’m looking forward to Microshit Windowless IMMobile 7; they’ve re-added “Copy and Paste” and LandScape orientation to Screen, just like it was in WM2003SE. I hope they’ve included the Control key on the virtual keyboard, which made “Copy and Paste and Cut” commands a breeze.

    Oh wait, nevermind; I have the EVO, who in America actually cares about WM7 (8, 9, or 10 for that matter). Probably some 60 y/o nerd, in a suit and tie with penny loafers.

    Windows Phone 7

    2010 = Yes
    Copy/Paste = No
    Multitasking = No

    FAIL!

    • sal

      Whats more important to you? copy/paste, multitasking or MMS AND MS OFFICE that apple lacks. I know you gonna say that apple offers MMS, but just to be on the same page, apple offered last yr and just offered multitasking last month.

      • some internet dude

        there are apps for both ios and android that open and edit MS docs. id rather get have basic functionality in my phone. Editing can be done on Ios and android, but no flash in browser, copy/paste, multitasking is a deal breaker. MS dropped the ball on this phone too.

  • burnet

    that ring is so gaudy

  • Bob

    Who the heck wears pennyloafers with a suit?

  • mingkee

    So the roadmap on tmonews is correct, but without copy/paste and legacy application support, it gets less attractive for me.

  • PAPINYC

    My point.

    Newsflash :

    American software giant Microsoft bitten by it’s recent Kin failure chooses to inflict the same pain on Europe this time around with WM7. All things going to plan should mean huge losses and a stateside launch to follow.

    More phones from the big players, more choices for us consumers. They better make this one a lot better than the others in the market or their November date will be off.

    Engadget is full of it here. This is more that 2 weeks old and the original video (not engadget watermarked) is freely availble here:

    I Hope THAT by The Time WP7 hits The Street, msft HAS Changed their Concept of USING UI font/WORDS THAT are a Mixture Of ALL CAPS, no caps, And Mixed Caps on THE same Page. See, E.G., SETTINGS Page. VERY Annoying and Busy APPEARING.

    @Tech Junkie for Life

    Well stated. Stay tuned Microshit users!

    BTW, can’t wait for Windows Mobile 25!

  • Larmol

    Great News,we in Africa will be eagerly waiting for gadgets with WP7 probably in Apr. or July 2011.

  • Riley

    Microsoft’s biggest problem is accurately represented in the picture above. The company is run by people who are used to “doing what they’ve always done.”

    Take a look at the employees (developers and engineers) at Apple, Google and other forward-thinking tech companies. There isn’t a 20-year age difference between “workers” and “leaders.” They’re the same people.

    http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/execs.html

    Most notably – Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Products & User Experience at Google, is one of the most powerful women in tech. She’s 35.

  • molten83

    Oh my God, why do people always bash microsoft, this is called choice, if you dont like it dont buy it and just because you dont like means somebody should not like it. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. I ,personally dont really know but at least will wait to see and use it before you passed judgement. Every body keep saying andriod this and andriod that, not to mention iOS but where were they 4 years ago? Exactly,so you cant say its too late for anyone, being windows, palm OS, meego et al. Come up with good stuff and it will sell,Period.

    News @6 Headlines BGR Readers dont get it!

    The only reason MS is in this game is to extend the desktop where they make money, not to compete Vs droid or iOS. Dont expect a market leader when they are competing against what Google is giving away, it’s a loss leader to their real money.

  • zee

    @PAPINYC
    you are a duche. your acting like google pays for your bills, hell im happy microsoft is making wp7. Which means more competition, which equals to better products and better pricing. Hell if wp7 is good i will consider it.

  • PAPINYC

    @Zee

    Awwwwwh…….Zee, don’t get your “loafers” in a ruff’. Less than 20 people have even cared to post a comment about the inevitable arrival of Windows IMMobile 7, a couple of whom have cared enough to post multiple comments; while subsequent posts on BGR have garnered dozens of more posts and, obviously, more interest. Quite frankly, whether they try to change the name to WP7, instead of WM7 (as it should be sequentially), to get away from the stigma of Windows Mobile, no one really cares. Except, of course, the 20 or so of you who wear “loafers” and post here, in hopes that Microsoft will somehow get it together with it’s mobile platform. I suggest you try reading some of the other posts. And, ditch the “loafers”.

  • PAPINYC

    @Bob
    Thanks for the distinction and clarification. Unfortunately, I used Windows Mobile from 2002 to 2010 and, just couldn’t hold on any longer; like many, I’ve switched to Android. I dismissed the iPhone because of the U.S. carrier but the EVO sounded too good to pass up and, on June 4th, switched from my carrier of 8 years (Verizon) and bought the EVO. At first, I must say, I was skeptical about switching platforms and carrier but, I can honestly say now, I haven’t any regrets. If only Microsoft had allowed it’s smartphone platform to evolve more competitively with the rest of the marketplace sooner, so many of us wouldn’t have jumped ship. I would be willing to see what progress Microsoft has made in a year or two.
    [Too many disappointments with Microsoft in the past :'(]
