Nice changes, but did they really have to ugly up those icons?

      I totally agree

Hehe. At least Microsoft has written a word processor for the Mac.

Apple never wrote one worth having. If they did it would have a major design flaw that prevented you from writing anything and Jobs would say “It’s not our fault. YOU are typing wrong.”

I guess Microsoft wants to protect its 40%+ ownership of Apple by writing apps that actually work.

I don’t agree. Pages is pretty slick and has way less overhead than Word, has better OS integration into the MacOS, and actually has a real table editor built in to the application – one that can actually calculate directly.

This from a Word user since it was a Mac-only application in the late ‘80s, and I’ve got Beta 5 of Mac Office installed right now. I use iWork and Office – both are great tools. You?

I’m waiting for Open Office for Mac. Tired of MS charging the average user so much for a word processor!

Why have you been waiting? OOM has been out for ages, hasn’t needed X11 for a couple years. The 3.3 Dev version works very well.

microsoft owns 40 % of apple?

    • Jayrodathome

no. Microsoft owns around half of one percent. And the shares are non “voting”. It was money given to apple to help get them on there feet I guess. a couple hundred million. No where near %40. that’s just urban legend.

Actually Microsoft sold those shares off shortly after buying them. They were non-voting shares and it was about presenting a strong partnership between Microsoft and Apple. The money did not keep Apple alive, it wouldn’t have been enough, and they wouldn’t have announced it at a Steve Jobs keynote if it had simply been an investment.

Microsoft does own a share of apple. Back when apple was about to go out of business microst injected about 200 mil into apple to keep them going.

i thought Office for Windows was dumping those awful ribbons in the next version because they were so unpopular in 07, so why would they be adding them to Mac 11? really disappointing.

Bummer about Entourage. I understand how people love outlook but entourage did this thing where you could create “projects” it allowed you to tag everything from emails, contacts, calendars, etc.. plus files of all types together and color code them. So if you were working on a specific project then you could create it in entourage and have it track folders and files to keep all project items together. It was really simple and had a good interface. Outlook I understand has catagories and you can do a similar thing. But you don’t have the ability to track folders and tag files within the catagories. Regardless I am all google now. Thats just one of the features I liked about entourage that outlook never had. Or at least I don’t think they have.

Beta 4 was interesting. Wishing I had more success migrating my .pst file over.
