LG's android tablet to drop in Q4 2010

General

LG announced earlier this month that it was launching an Android-powered tablet as part of its new Optimus brand. On Thursday, the Korean company confirmed that it will be launching this Android tablet in Q4 2010. Though Q4 2010 is still a broad window for launch, the timing suggests that LG is trying desperately to hit that ever important holiday shopping season. No word on whether this tablet will be a Korea-only exclusive, but if it does launch globally, is anyone interested?

I think this is a little late in an already crowded market

Everything is dropping in Q4 until it doesn’t drop till 2011. Get it working and give customers a 2 week notice before delivery and we’ll respect you more. Duplicating Apple’s vague marketing tactics is so 2009.

      Apple’s “vague” marketing?

They show a product and give you a date when they will start selling it, where exactly is the “vague”?

LG Makes sexy hardware…I’m down if the price is right; otherwise, I’m not spending $500 for a device that has no true purpose.

  • jay

aww..cute. lg still tries to make stuff. when will they learn…

    • Tunger

What are you talking about? They are one of the top global manufacturers of appliances and consumer electronics. Their 2009 revenue was over $100 billion. What planet are you living on?

      • jarrett

        $100 billion USD or TWD?

      • Tunger

USD. And LG is South Korean, not Taiwanese.

Even my windows in korea were lg. They were bad a$$ windows.
So was my washer, fridge, and tv. Oh and I thinkn my on demand water heater was too. And my phone.

How many Android devices actually ship with Froyo? I know the Nexus One would be shipping with Froyo had Google not given up on the hardware side of things but other than that what phones ship with Froyo?

If you have a “latest” and “greatest” would it not be beneficial for said product to be showing up on all the “new” hardware? Maybe by the time Gingerbread drops Froyo will actually be the standard shipping OS…….. Or 2.1 anyway….. my bad, I meant 1.6.

      • Arthur P. Johnson

Bought my Evo with assurances that Froyo is coming. So is Christmas.

      • jarrett

        @ APJ,

Probably about the same time. That is my point. These manufacturers keep delaying the new releases and they are the reason Google has decided to slow down development. Google is working on the UI aspect of Android and honestly it is a wast of time. HTC is going to (NON) sense whatever they do and Motorola is going to (drunkenly) MOTOBLUR the same.

I’ve already got the product tag line: “Comes from Korea, sends all data to China.”

    Android does it again.

    • jarrett

That is hilarious! If you find that offensive, go get yourself some new wallpaper.

      • StevenHamburg

but it’s not hilarious. not even remotely witty. people will find it hard to be offended by his statement because it is such a pathetic attempt at humor.

must be 1/2 the price of an “iPAID” and have Froyo, 9″ – 10″ screen SLCD or AMOLED

    • jarrett

1/2 the price? I think it should be free. Why am I paying anything for an Android device? I want it for free. After all the device builders get Android for free, why do we have to pay for it? Stupid businesses trying to make money selling products.

I am interested in any quality product that does what I need it to do and doesn’t cut a bunch of corners just so they have features to add in the next model.

It better have a front camera, USB port, handle HD video, and a mini-HDMI port (these are minimum requirements). It also better not overheat when used outdoors! ;)

    • jarrett

      @ Eric,

Your iPad overheats when you are outdoors?

      • Eric

I never said that I had an iPad. There are reports that some are though.

      • jarrett

        @ Eric,

Sorry, I assumed since you were commenting on what a product was or was not doing that you actually had the product in question. I have heard the same. Since the company building the product sells three or so a second I would guess that for the most part almost nobody is having this issue, other than the person/people filing the lawsuit.

Ipad is cute for ten year olds in need of an entry level tablet to fingerpaint on. I for one will wait to see what tablets Android is released on because I have this weird desire to have my tablet pc actually be a computer and not an obese ipod touch.

      • Eric

Ford sold millions of Pintos and Explorers. How do you think that worked out for them? Selling a lot of an item does not make it flawless.

      • Eric

        Joe… I agree with your comment 100%!

  • Brian

Need to have rich applications before I will consider it.

I had an LG Dare which broke down after one year i.e. when the warranty expired. I then bought a refurbished one and it broke down after three months i.e. when the warranty expired. I will never ever buy an LG product that I need to rely on. TV’s maybe but not phones and tablets.

Nice to see you aren’t using the handle “Android” today

It just so happens I was chatting to an LG rep the other day and he made mention of the fact they were working on a tablet.
He personally had been very taken with the Dell Streak, so he was pretty upbeat about the (supposed) plans.

It’s going to be ~7″, run Gingerbread out the box and he’s personally hoping that it’ll be on sale before Christmas but admits it could easily slip ’til January because of the time constraints related to the version of Android they want to use.

Apparently Vodafone in the UK have also placed an order for 250,000 already, so I guess it means it has 3G connectivity.

Where it started to get a little more into the realms of fantasy was the fact that it will supposed support 3D video playback and recording.
Sounds a little like wishful thinking to me but who knows, if Nintendo can produce a 3D DS, I guess it’s possible LG can produce a 3D tablet…

by and large i like LG products so i’m hopeful this is a winner.
