Images of Verizon Wireless' first LTE USB modem emerge

Exclusive

A new connect just dropped some interesting images in our inbox. What you are looking at is Verizon Wireless’ first LTE USB modem that VZW is currently testing. As you can see from our images, the manufacturer is Samsung LG and the unit contains the much anticipated LTE SIM card. We don’t have much else to report on this one other than the hardware looks to be pretty polished… hopefully it will be released to the masses soon. We’ve got a couple more images for your scrutiny after the break.

    • Andrew Munchbach

Looks like a regular sized SIM.

      • Ss3ann

      • thedogscar

      • mukilteo

Am I missing something it says LG? Very cool non the less can’t wait to see it work

    • will

yes, your missing the area for the serial numbers where is says LG real big :)

  • Geo

Looks like LG in the image, not Sammy!

  • grrr

    Show me the phones.

    • Joe J

I asked customer service about phones, Very cryptly they are testing some. First of 2011 We should see some phones.

  • Anonymous

    Samsung? I spy LG…

  • midibite

It looks like the maker is LG not Samsung.

  • Matt

LTE is meaningless if Verizon caps or throttles data and / or charges a buttload for it.

    • StevieJobs

or charges a buttload for it? Speak for yourself.

  • grrr

I can’t wait until I can swap phones by swapping sims on verizon.

    • Charles M

Several Verizon Exec’s have said that you won’t be able to swap SIM’s similar to GSM networks. So you’ll still have to call *228.

      • Patrick

        Charles,

Incorrect sir. The business models of all the major carriers are shifting from phone sales to service sales. Verizon wants you to purchase your own phone, but they just want you to have their SIM/Service. Switching phones will be as easy as just flipping SIM chips (less any device that may require a plan change: ergo Basic Phone to Smartphone)

      • Kenny

The first initial LTE devices/phones are going to have EVDO and LTE. So wouldn’t that mean that there would have to be a sim in the device and also be activated through *228 to get the data working?

If they managed to make it that you would only activate the device with sim card only that would easier and cool.

  • grrr

It says Lg right on the back.

  • Redigits

    Awesome!

  • mrgmain

Looks like LG….but its cool I wonder why VZW just didn’t go straight for micro-sim instead of a reg size sim? But I’m still happy to see LTE products starting to show their faces.

Might be for compatibility with Vodaphone in the EU.

  • thedogscar

wouldn’t it be nice if lg used this new technology on their new tablets:

  • Len

Ewwww! LG and the design could of been better… I wanna see the next prototype. I think I rather see a Sierra Wireless or a Novatel card than a LG card…..

  • rage151

Will LTE handhelds require a SIM card? If so, does that mean that no current VZW phone will be compatible?

    • Anonymous

Current Verizon phones won’t be compatible with LTE, however Verizon will likely keep the CDMA network around for years until they fully transition to LTE for voice and Data.

      • Len

you mean until old timers decide to put their jurassic phones in a museum and upgrade….

      • Anonymous

        Pretty much.

  • Sarah

Why would anyone care about Verizon’s LTE when Sprint already has dual mode cards and a superior network?

    • Ethan

Because unlike Sprint, Verizon will theoretically have 4G coverage of their current 3G and could possibly cover every inch of the U.S with the spectrum they bought. (This all by the end of 2014ish)

      • X Glansburg

And that is why I took the plunge on Verizon. They are going to have a reliable network in the future (as well as right now). I couldn’t take another round of T-mobile crybaby’s saying it’s going to get better or At&t charging the same for 3G that doesn’t get cover me on trips. Being someone who must travel a lot, there really isn’t any good option, but Verizon for me.

Though I do still hate their commercials. A lot.

    • Creamy Tuna Casserole

LMAO! You just made my day.

      • Ryan D

Me too!! No need to even respond to that one!

    • Anonymous

The jerk store called, they’re running out of you.

    • webby

Oh puleeze. When my friend on Sprint travels with me, we travel through areas where he has no signal, zip zero, nada, and he has to use my Verizon phone to make business calls.

But but but, “Sprint roams on Verizon”, sayeth the Sprint fanbois … Phoney urban legend. Not in real world conditions in my experience.

      • trooth

The purchase of Alltel was partly so they could can roaming relationships with Sprint. Sprint needs Verizon coverage, not vice versa.

    • VZWguy30

Mostly because it isn’t a superior network and WeeMax vs. Lte is like comparing Verizon’s coverage to Cricket.

  • Mike

Just give me my LTE/CDMA MiFi on Verizon and I can die happy!

  • Jason Chmiel

I know this means only good things and I am a Verizon customer myself, but I am new to the “LTE” world and have no idea what it means for me. Forgive me for my ignorance but would anyone be able to provide resources or a very brief description of what this means? Thanks in advance!

    • Shelllll

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, 4G(generation)which basically means faster internet.

  • rage151

    LTE = http://lmgtfy.com/?q=wiki+LTE

Guess I will hold out for some type of LTE compatible Droid near the end of the year when VZW should have LTE up and running in 20+ markets.

    • Rob

Unfortunately, I think the earliest we’ll see LTE handsets is late Q1 to Q2 of 2011. But here’s to hoping.

      • Max

I agree- I am not confident LTE will be available until at least Summer 2011, and not even a lot of coverage at that. The November 15th date Verizon is touting is a ruse, IMO.

      • trooth

LTE handsets would be data only on LTE and the voice would still hit 1x/EvDO. Data would have to fallback to all 3. So it is more of a challenge to set up a voice device than a data only device. I agree it will probably be Q2 2011 before we see a LTE handset. Maybe it will have an Apple on it, maybe not. But with Verizons quaility control it will take a ton of time before it gets approved.

    • thedogscar

I agree … by the end of the year there will be one, and “5 by May”

  • joe smith

Fuck verizon they suck.Sprint all the way.100 and u get everything. Verizon people r a bunch of days.go and sum a big red.

    • Drake Papajohn

      Well put.

  • Brian

Try going to europe with it. BWAH HA HA HA! No thanks, i’ll wait till att implements theirs. 2.5mbps on the downlink today aint too shabby in my book. i’ll wait. thanks anyway.

    • The Masked One

What makes you think the LTE in Europe will be any different than the LTE here?
