BlackBerry 9780 running BlackBerry 6 seen on video

mobile

If you can’t wait until Tuesday to see what BlackBerry 6 is going to look like, blog driphter.com may have something for you. The blog posted a five minute video of an unreleased BlackBerry 9780 — the purported successor to the Bold 9700 — running BlackBerry OS 6. The video gives us a little taste of what the new WebKit browser and spiffified interface are going to look like. If you’re excited — and judging by our poll yesterday, a lot of you are — hit the jump, we’ve got the video all queued up for you.

    I like

  • bb fan

    excited is not correct.

more like “about time”. and this assumes it supports 9700, 9650 and etc. some of the last generation bb’s that have been released in the last year or so.

  • grrr

So its a 9700 with a bump in ram and maybe a better camera? Same old same old i guess.

    • MONOPOLY MAN

Yup…”same old”. Make phone calls, get your email, and have great battery life all without security issues. How horrible.

      • AtlHarry

Blackberries do NOT all have great battery life. My Curve had to be charged just as much as my Droid.

      • PiratePrentice

Bull crap. My wife’s curve lasts 2-3 days neither my storm nor my droid have ever lasted that long with or without normal usage

      • Mike

I charge my bold 9700 once every 3 days!

  • Tdot34

Can’t wait! It better be available for Bold 9700

  • fj

This actually means that the 9700 and most current devices that have only 256MB in ram cannot run OS6. Sucks that a device less than 1 year old cannot upgrade.

    • Bill

Actually, it doesn’t mean that at all, it simply means that carriers will have a new device that is os6-optimal in the shops in time for the holidays and if at&t do have an exclusive on the 9800 then this 9780 suddenly becomes a fair bit more important for somebody like T-Mobile.

  • Professor Stevens

Finally, an update to an actual working OS. Unlike the broken, fragmented Android OS. Watch their obnoxious fan base troll the comment section.

    • Bill

You don’t think your comments are likely to encourage android fans to troll this topic then due to their inflammatory nature?

      • Chut Pata

Creating controversy is an art that many aspire to master, but very few are successful.

    • StevieJobs

      Broken fragmented OS?

Isn’t there an OS leak for blackfairies every day?

      • iMiiTH

Those are just incremental upgrades, it’s still the same OS version.

It’s basically an operating system performance/feature update.

Like carriers releasing a fix for wifi, or changing how a phone feature works.

It doesn’t change any api’s and all third part applications still work exactly the same.

    • AtlHarry

So you’re saying that all Blackberries will run OS6? It won’t be fragmented at all? I knew I walked into the wrong parallel universe portal this morning…

      • StevieJobs

        @AtlHarry

        Good one!

      • AtlHarry

Funny, now I remember looking longingly at the “new” blackberry Tours and such when they got their shiny new OS upgrades and my poor little Curve didn’t… That must have been the reality universe.

    • Tony

      You are correct Stevens

  • Zack

    I am unimpressed.

  • dwayne

I don’t know. I think that it looks god but I don’t know if it is going to be able to compete with Android or the Iphone. I will have to see this in person to really get a feel for it.

  • BDot

-Since this phone is essentially a 9700 with more RAM, hopefully that means OS 6 will come to existing 9700′s. But since RIM is showing off a new model, I guess that could be taken to mean it wont.

-For the love God give the “same old” argument a rest. You name me ONE manufacturer that reinvents the look of their products with each release.

All HTC phones essentially look the same.

    All iPhones look the same.

Explain why Blackberries should be different?

It’s called “branding.” People knowing what it is, and who made it by looks is a GOOD thing.

Look at any other consumer goods and you’ll see the same holds true (clothes, cars, tv’s, etc).

  • MicroNix

Android broken and fragmented? I guess that’s why more Android units are being sold every day than Apple now. Keep watching Rim sink though. Until someone there gets the memo that in order to compete they need a full length touch screen, they are going to continue being the same dull and boring devices as they always have.

    • Bozz

Yes, broken and fragmented. Each Droid phone has a different version and different UI for Android. Each Droid has issues with adding duplicate and triplicate contacts, unable to view contacts in your contact list that you can dial from the phone app. Audio that cuts out halfway through a call, tunnel audio, static, etc. all persist throughout Android devices.

Amount sold does not correlate into quality. How many broken iPhone 4s have been sold? How many Britney Spears albums have been sold?

RIM has a full touch screen phone, it’s called the Storm 1 and Storm 2.

All of the iPhones and HTC phones are the same dull and boring designs they’ve always been.

Just HOW ignorant are you Android fans?

      • AtlHarry

I must be VERY ignorant. I have none of those issues.

Then again, I am using vanilla android (Moto Droid) with no Sense or Blur or any other UI nonsense, which I am very much against.

      • The Blitz

I don’t think they *have* to have a full touch-screen device to be able to compete. Blackberry devices with full QWERTY keyboards have their market and this upgrade is only going to help them. Blackberry’s need refreshed just like every other device. I’m happy to see RIM finally creating nicer UI with a much more friendly flow…but they couldn’t do it quick enough for me…I’ve already switched over to Android :-)

(and BTW…all HTC phones do not look the same…maybe you should actually look at one and hold it in your hand before making that assumption)

      • StevieJobs

I must be very ignorant too. You’re calling all HTC and iPhones “the same dull and boring designs they have always been.” You mean Blackberries right?

Hey! They updated the Bold! Its the same design but i have a optical pad now! WOW! Its a totally brand new design! Not like the same dull and boring Bold from last year!

      • Len

Can you please outline the form factor changes from original Iphone > Iphone 3G > Iphone 3Gs?

      • AtlHarry

I don’t think that was his point. His point was that Blackberry is guilty of the same thing.

      • Abstract

The transition of the 3G to the 3GS was based on performance, rather than design. The original iPhone, 3G/S, and 4 are all different designs. Blackberry does not only have devices that look a like, but their OS is behind when compared to Android, ISO4, and even Web OS for that matter.

      • nick

So actually or seeing things one sided my friend. I worked for Verizon Wireless and now I am a Desktop Support analyst. I used every single phone type and OS and can appreciate the benefits of each. Then I can also compare them and give advanced useful facts and opinions for each.
Basically Blackberry is still great for Business.( I set up many everyday for our employees.) They lack the innovations of what people want in a multimedia smart phone. My droid incredible can upload a picture to facebook in 5 sec. The blackberry takes over a minute!

Its almost 2011 and RIM is just upgrading their phones with more ram and a slightly better camera that is still very outdated. OS6.0 is what 5.0 should have been.

The droid 2, that phone is just a upgraded droid 1…(more ram, higher MP camera (doesn’t mean it takes good pix), slightly more curvy look, and a fast CPU) nothing to special it could have looked more futuristic and not so plain.

And iphone would be better if it was so controlled by Apple and if they were on multiple US networks.

WM7 Who knows they better captivate with there software and the hardware needs to be top of the line with minimum 8MP camera, HD recording and playback, DLNA support, 802.11n, Front facing camera in HD, Webkit Browser, and pleasing and useful UI or something creative and powerful but yet still simple so anyone can use it. I hate how its all dark and gloomy looking from the Videos and pix online.

        I think I am done rambling on…

These are Just general statements for devices that most people already know or want.

If you agree with the general ideas I have presented then post a “$$$” in your comments or “!!!” if you disagree and state why. I think people would like to know.

      • K!ngK0ng

        Bozz,
You are confusing the proliferation of creativity which is the result of having an open source platform with fragmented. Each phone is FREE to experiment, while still holding on the the core features (i.e. apps tend to run on all platforms, in spite of different user experiences).

It is the nature of giving people freedom. They end up exploring and creating things that make sense, rather than a bunch of stuffed suites at Apple making marketing decisions which trumped the tech weenies who kept pointing out that the latest phone, um, may not work.

Let people enjoy their freedom without making up problems that don’t exist. I have been a happy G1 user for two years and have not had any of _your_ problems.

  • Chris

Does anyone proofread their work anymore?

    • nick

no we type to quick to care …lol

    I love BlackBerry .

     Sent via BlackBerry

  • Carlo-xD

Really? wow this phone looks so boring! no wonder most business use it, its like . a “get to work” phone i seriously think this phone will be no competiotion to either android or even the iphone. Also, its 2010! where’s the touch sceen?

    • http://George FURIOUS GEORGE

Maybe thats because some people DO use there phone for work !!

      • Carlo-xD

ok… well u sir go buy it (when it comes out) and work all u want even out of the office with your new blackberry os

      • Tony

        Ugh, you’re soooooo stupid!

      • Abstract

I’m sure the business user isn’t the only people RIM is trying to attract with their devices.

  • The Blitz

How is he moving the home screen icons up and down on the trackpad? I’m talking about where the All, Frequent, Downloads, whatever bar is…

    • Tony

He’s swiping left and right using the trackpad.

  • Tony

I really hope this is better than what they have now. If no, then that’s the end of BlackBerry. You can only fail for so long before people get sick of it. And it’s not just their phones. I’ve been trying to log into blackberry.com for like a half an hour and it’s not working. They completely suck is every way. I’ve had 4 different model phones from them, and they will not be getting another chance from me.

    • ljp

What possesses people to leave these weepy break-up letters to RIM? “You’ll never go on without me! You’ll see! I’ve found a new phone and she loves me!”.

You should wait until they start losing subscribers before you declare them dead.

    • nick

      Did you try forgot password?

  • Max

Just goes to show you it doesn’t take much to impress a Blackberry MORON. You could bring back an IBM XT and sell it to a Blackberry idiot.

    • AtlHarry

Look buddy… if you start putting down WordPerfect and dot matrix printers now, I’m gonna have to find you and hurt you.

      EGA is all I need…

    • Len

Well it was enough to get them to use a BlackBerry over an Iphone or Android. Get over yourself.

  • bringit

I FIGHT ABOUT PHONES ON THE INTERNET!!!

  • Martin

Is it just me or do people act like they own these companies ? Defending them like a long lost brother or something … I will go out on a limb here and say I love competition and currently own an : iPhone , Blackberry , and Nexus One. I only have the iPhone on my account currently but I do look forward to my next “raise” so I can afford ALL these plus the WebOS capable Pre Plus on there own number and use ALL these awesome devices. Long live options , long live choices !

    • StevieJobs

You telling me I don’t own a phone company? Stay tuned.

  • bmwmotorcar

While the new os will bring blackberry closer to where the others already are. One thing not being discussed is if any of these devices will be 4g capable.

  • Len

Outside of apps and aesthetics, I don’t see what makes Android or OS4 so much superior to BB6. If someone could let me know, it’d be greatly appreciated.

The web-browser which was the BlackBerry’s weak point has been addressed (it is now superior to the Iphones). The fluidity of the UI has been greatly improved in BB6 as well which should satisfy those who call the UI (boring and dated).

The integration of core applications on the BlackBerry is vastly superior as they are all linked together, but I wouldn’t expect a user of a device with gimped multi-tasking to understand that one.

    • nick

Go use an Android phone at 1Ghz or more speed like and EVO, INcredible, Nexus one or Samsung Galaxy and let me know after a week what you think and see if your blackberry can keep up. BB is good for certain things. But overall, it is laggy and clunky and 3 years in the past when they should have had something like 6.0 in 2009 at the least.

      • Tony

I have a BlackBerry and it’s not “laggy” at all. You’re a moron who doesn’t know how to use a phone. Go read the manual you fucking moron!

  • Max

That browser..lol..all I can say is LMAO. Wow. THIS is what the big deal about OS6 is? That browser is horrible. And those icons! Oh my god. LOL. What some people are satisfied with. lol.

    • Tony

You’re a fool. It performs better than any other browser on the market. Do you fucking research before you post shit like this. ugh, you’re a fucking moron!

  • wtf

To much trolling. I have Android and blackberry ,now I would like to get a hold of this new OS and give it a spin. I guess I will wait and see what my carrier gets device wise before I upgrade my berry.

  • Big Z

You guys all have too much time on your hands. Use the device that suits your need and quit whining about competition. It only leads me to believe you are envious about those devices.
