Motorola takes another swipe at iPhone 4, 'no jacket required' for DROID X

Humor

Advertising wars are so much fun! Late yesterday, Motorola took another swipe at smartphone rival Apple, capitalizing on the free-case fiasco of the iPhone 4. In a Facebook post, the company displayed a poster that read:

At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly.  That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design.  The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket.  For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.

Burn. The first ad Motorola put out was a little tongue and cheek, however this one is a sharp stick to the eye… a very funny sharp stick to the eye. We’ve got the full-sized image after the bounce.

I don’t necessarily think Jobs should resign; but I don’t envy him either. I think of late he’s become an incredibly polarizing figure. Before he was worshiped by the Apple indoctrinated. Now in addition to that he seems to be reviled by everyone else.

    • DaHarder

      Really…?

It’s obvious by now that there’s clearly a design/engineering issue here that warrants a re-thinking of the antenna system, especially if they insist on selling the device completely unprotected.

Guess which phone will be next to appear in the death-grip rogues gallery? Hahahahaaaaa. Put yourself out there like that, and you’re fair game for Apple. I think this rogues gallery is a brilliant move by Apple and could be used for other issues with competitors. If it catches on, the competition will follow, as they always do, with versions of their own. They’ll make their version slightly different, call it something else and insists it’s better than Apple’s version. Hahahaaaaa. I personally think Apple is right in calling out the competition. it  helps the consumer make a more informed decision.

      • DaHarder

For one sounding like such a Devout iDiot, you serious need to brush up on the latest Apple antics.

Hint: Apple already (failingly) added the DROID X to their little videologue, and their false claims were debunked within five minutes of said video’s appearance.

P A T H E T IC! (both Apple’s failure to man-up, and especially you for any number of reasons)

    • Fastwalking

@mikestorm – What the heck do you do with your time? Do you read newpapers or watch the news at all??

“Apple can’t make iphones or ipads fast enough to keep up with demand”

“Apple announced it’s profit and revenue on June 26, 2010. The result were quite breath-taking with revenue of $15.7 billion and profit of $3.25 billion.”

That was its most recent QUARTER. And with that you think Steve Jobs should resign???? How dense are you? Apple is doing just fine thank you and I don’t think Jobs has anything to worry about in terms of his career. You however might might want to catch up on things a bit as the world and Apple don’t revolve around one antennae issue.

      Google it!: Android Reception Problems

See what comes up. There are quite a few Droid X, Evo 4G etc.

So the bumper makes the iPhone big and bulky – does it make it as big and bulky as say a Droid X?

If memory serves, the iPhone 4 WiTH a bumper is still saller than a Droid X.

So what are they talking about?

    • DaHarder

Well for those with larger hands, or those who simply desire a display some 20% lager than that of the iPhone4, while being marginally thicker, memory expandable, HDMI-out capable, with a far less attenuation susceptible internal antenna system, all while existing on a (proven) more reliable US network, et al, the additional ‘bulk’ is rather negligible.

      Choice is Good…

      • Nhowell14

This guy knows what I’m talking about!!!

      • Fastwalking

“the additional ‘bulk’ is rather negligible.”???? That’s what the whole ad is about moron. Didn’t you get the “no jacket required” tongue in cheek criticism?

The point is – how can you knock a competitor as being big and bulky when you are already bigger and bulkier??

        wake up already.

      • darktanone

That 20% could be deal breaker as I witnessed a few days ago. HDMI is the only format it handles.  The iPhone 4 does analog and digital through an A/V cable. That memory expansion is costly ($200 for 32GB). Add that to the cost of the phone and HELLO! Also space for applications is limited on the Droid X. You can store over 2000 apps on the iPhone and use every bit of that 16 or 32 GB. You won’t need that many, but it’s nice. I have 120 apps on my iPhone 4. The Android market place is only 28% the size of the app store. That means 72% more apps available to iPhone users. Now that’s real choice.  You also have nothing like iTunes, so there’s no full-featured software and store for organizing, backing up, and downloading music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, university lectures, apps, books, and ringtones. Plus, if your  Droid X gets bricked by an over-the-air update, you likely have no backup. With an iPhone, just sync it back to iTunes and you’re back in business. I live in Phoenix and have great AT&T reception. I can make calls and go online, use apps at the same time. Droid can’t do that on Verizon.

      • DaHarder

You’re blatant ignorance is showing… You might want to cover that up for everyone’s benefit.

Note: there are so many fallacies/inaccuracies in your little tirade that it’s not even worth picking that nonsense part.

        Enjoy…

      • Darktanone

That’s a cop out! Your desperation and defensiveness is showing. Pick apart my comment and prove your assertion, otherwise shut up! One more thing, iPhones 4′s Retina display is superior to Droid X screen.

  • Spdr-Mn

I ordered my iPhone 4 on June 29 and received it on July 6. I always have 5 bars of 3G, I’ve never had a dropped call, performance is always super fast…the only “problem” I’ve had is that sometimes (almost never, in other words) the “messeges” and “edit” options don’t appear when I’m texting, so if I want to go back to my messeges I have to call the person I just texted and end it to get the options back. It’s a minor glitch, but still, it’s there sometimes. All of my friends have ANDROID phones. I have friends on Sprint that own a Hero, Moment, and Evo (my friend with an EVO got one for his wife too), three friends on Verizon who use a DROID and two DROID Eris’, and one pal on T-Mobile with a G1. I’ve played with their phones, and while I love the widget support, ANDROID just seems much more prone to bugs than iOS, in my opinion. I myself had a BACKFLIP before my iPhone 4, just too many bugs. iOS just seems more reliable, classier…read Cnet’s and Engadget’s review of the DROID x…it’s got bugs….this is just my opinion, it’ll get thumbsdown because BGR is filled with people who want to throw tomatoes at Steve Jobs and humiliate Apple, ANDROID fanboys in other words…and I’m ok with that…I like the iPhone 4, but I like ANDROID too (I want a Captivate ;) )…I just don’t get why some people spend time going on forums just to ridicule operating systems, companies, and devices…come on guys, grow up…

    • Yiannis

When I talk with my classic iPhone owning friend in SF she regularly drops calls. Regularly as in 90% of the time…

I guess that’s an area problem, but it’s ironic that of all places it exists in SF and NY…

    • jayrad95?

      i agree

  • Perspective

I guess this is how Motorola gets attention these days. . .talk about Apple. Nice. You’d think 30 years in the business would give them something more to say, but based on their most recent financials (which disclose that Motorola’s entire mobile phone business is being crushed by a single device from a single company who’s been engineering mobile phones for 3 years), I guess I shouldn’t expect much. More info:

Apple: 34,300 employees (2/3 retail), 2009 revenue $43 billion, $11 billion operating income, $8 billion net income

Motorola: 53,000 employees (no retail), 2009 revenue: $22 billion, negative operating income, negative net income (i.e. they lost money).

Thirty years in the business has made them old, slow, and inefficient. Which stock would you buy if you were spending your own money?

    • MicroNix

You can say what you want about Motorola, but when Apple brought them into their ring on reception and antenna design, everyone knew they (Apple) were going to get slaughtered. Moto normally has the best radios and reliability in the business. While Apple can claim the most apps, smoothest interface, they still suck it hard when it comes to the word “phone” in smartphone. Sorry but there is nothing magical when you claim your latest phone “only drops 1 more call in 100 on average” than your last excuse for a phone. For them to take on Moto is the most laughable stuggle for justifying their flawed design I’ve seen!

      • Bervick

Their first phone was revolutionary as far as the interface went. I’ll give them that. But the echoes on that phone were just TERRIBLE. Everytime I spoke to someone on his iPhone 1, it was like it was a conference call. And they have the b@alls to diss Motorola on their core tech.

I think many iPhone owners get this and accept it. Enjoy your iPhone guys – it is a great device. Even with that flaw. No one is contesting that.

To the other iFan dumb asses who still cannot get the point – Steve said everyone makes mistakes. We are not perfect. A hidden apology for their design. Yet the rotten apples don’t get it.

      • JBUG

If Motorola are so good why are they loosing money and going BUST?

      • Darktanone

Dude, don’t you get it? It’s not just about who makes the best phone part of the phone. With more than 30 years in the phone business, they’re getting their ass whopped by a company that’s only been in the phone business since 2007. I’m sure over time Apple will get better, and when they do, Motorola may not be around.

    • JBUG

Well said! the truth hurts maybe more people should do some research, open their eye’s and think before they write in forums. Motorola a once was company! Thirty years in the business they should be coming out with devices that smoke the rest!

      • ITLawMan

    • DaHarder

      Percentage of What…

Dropped Calls… Antenna Issues… Deservedly Bad Press Stemming From a Form-Over-Function Antenna Design Decision That Blatantly Exploits an Already Well Known ‘Law of Physics’?

  • Luis

Why put an AD out that says no case required when every rep in the retail store wants to sell you cases and screen protectors for your phone and tell you it’s required to keep your phone from getting scratched.

    • DaHarder

If this ‘advert’ had anything whatsoever to do with incasing the device in an effort to preserve it’s aesthetic appeal (e.g. prevent scratches) you might have point, but as it stands, this ‘advert’ is solely pointing out that using the DROID X without a ‘jacket’ will not result in the level of attenuation issues suffered by certain other handsets on the market.

      Strawman Successfully Destroyed!

Lmao. You tools are so ridiculous. Apple has a lame attempt at a marketing shot and you all cry for weeks straight. Then this nonsense comes out and the fandroids rejoice.

So what are they talking about?

    • Jonathan

Held the DroidX(friend’s) in my hand and then my Iphone4 with Belkin case and you’re right, the DroidX is still bulkier. Motorola better change that line before Apple puts a video out with the bulkier Droidx vs. IP4 with a case.

  • Bervick

I’ll clue you in – It’s not about the size/bulk. Did you even read the ad. Not a single point was mentioned about size. Is your mind filtering out the main topic of the ad ???

    • Fastwalking

@Pervick – Clue yourself in – the ad says “make crystal clear calls without a bulky jacket”. The iphone 4 is not bulky – Droide X is bulky without a “jacket”. Lets see you put a case on that X of yours and see if you can put it in your pocket.

      • Bervick

I’m sorry. I stand corrected. Anyway, the point was not about bulk alone. I’ve seen the official bumper and its quite slick, But it still covers the hallmark design of the stainless steel look.

The Droid X does not need a case. There is one place where its a bit bulky (that hump). But it’s still a bigger screen. If the iPhone 4 came in 2 sizes, one bigger and for the same price, I think a LOT of people would have opted for a larger size.

  • Born2Vape

Does any of this matter? Apple still made more money off of 1 phone than Motorola is worth. Just saying.

  • Joe

I’m not a fan of Motorola but anything making fun of/mocking Apple is gold.

All look at these ifag squirm because they feel
    Threathen

Apple vs Motorola – Motorola hand down

Apple is like a spoil child

    We don’t wear suit
    We don’t admit are mistake
    We blame other
    We don’t share

Apple u fuck up u should of grown up share your OS admit ur mistake

    And now ur dying slowly

Android out and this fall any phone running 3.0 will beat the iPhone

Motorola comes out with 15 phone a year while
    Apple has one

The only thing apple has going for them without a threat to die. Is the only thing that made them relevant which is the ipod

    Window 7
    Android 3.0

    One slight touch
And you can’t hear me now

    Free bumper just sad…

    • Patty

      > We don’t admit are mistake

Huh? You didn’t watch Steve Job’s video at all did you?

He *DEFINITELY* stated the staff isn’t perfect. The phone’s aren’t perfect. The cases are free *BECAUSE* of the problem.

      > And now ur dying slowly

Historic, record sales and record profits. I sure wish I owned a “dying” company like Apple.

  • wanderer

Are you fandroids blinded to everything except the antenna issue with the iphone4? Apple just made impressive quarterly profits during a recession, can’t make enough iphone4s and ipads to fulfill demands, sold over 3 million iPhones in a matter of 3 weeks and launching the iPhone4 in who knows how many countries. I have yet to hear sales figures on the Droidx and it’s been out a while now. Damn, I know you hate apple, but you could at least give credit where credit is due. Instead you all keep insisting that the IP4 can’t make calls, like you really even have one. I would be the first one inline returning my IP4 if it couldn’t make calls at all. Motorola is implying that an iPhone4 with a case is bulkier than a droidx without a case……..so wrong. I must admit the bigger screen is good for people with vision issues.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

    • JBUG

I have all four iPhone generations. Have only had an issue with the screen on the old 3G when it was held tight it would flicker and go a little crazy. So took it into the Apple store in Boston the guy hooked it up to his computer replicated the issue. He leaned under the counter pulled out a new one and said sorry but it seems there is an issue with the screen and here’s a new one for you. It was 9 months old and bought in another country. Try doing that with any of your other phones! Nokia and all the other need to be sent away for testing and that takes weeks. This is one of the many reasons why I buy Apple products. Same applies for their computers and iPods! This is why Apple with always be top in consumer satisfaction. If there is an issue with your product they fix it there and then. Like the iPhone 4 if you don’t like it get your money back of swap it for a new one end of story. I’m not sure why all these people have so much to say about a device none of them own, sounds like the tall poppy syndrome to me?

  • sal

Apple started by pointing their fingers at moto so mototola had to respond. 3 words for apple “FIX YOUR TOY”.

    • Patty

      “Pointing finger”?

Don’t you mean “clearing showing actual video of the phones that have problems”.

You want everyone to hide those problems?

  • Johnny G

That was brutal to read through all the responses. But in the end, if you don’t own an iPhone then you will never know. As for me, I wouldn’t trade my iPhone for any other phone.

    Void the Droid!!!

  • JulioN

I hate to seem rude, but just wondering when you guys will announce the winner of the iPhone 4 giveaway?

My Pre is getting worse by the day! :(

A new phone sure would be super great. :D

  • JAG

Good shot MOTO, thats how u answer.

  • Patty

I guess no one at Motorola has seen the COUNTLESS videos on YouTube.com that clearly show the DroidX *DOES* have a signal loss based on “how you hold it”.

    Duh.

    • Mike Dee

I haven’t seen the videos but I can tell that I have not seen any signal loss on my Droid X regardless of position or how I hold it.
