Amazon announces new lighter and thinner Kindle, $139 for Wi-Fi model

eBooks

If you got worried when Amazon’s Kindle went out of stock a bit earlier, you can rest easy as they have just announced a brand new model. The new Kindle (yes, it’s just called the Kindle) comes in both the classic white and now graphite colors, is thinner and lighter than the predecessor, and starts at a great $139 price point. There are both Wi-Fi and 3G models with the 3G models using AT&T’s network like the Kindle 2 did. Want raw specs? Well, the device is 21% thinner, has an even better contrast, doubled internal memory at 4GB, and it’s a bit quicker all around — faster page turning! It’s available August 27th in the US and UK. So, interested or what? Or do you have iPads to take care of your reading needs?

I use my evo 4g to read my kindle books but at 139, I might finally be interested.

I am rocking an iPad, thanks for asking.

Dude, if you’re “rocking an iPad,” you need to back away from the computer, and get a date.

Dude, if you’re “rocking an Android,” you need to get out of your mom’s basement and get some sunlight.

i have an ipad, but I can’t read with it at night, even at the darkest setting its wayyyyy too bright.

Cheap kindle, here I come. Not to mention Kindle books are cheaper than iBooks (if its available)…

Well…call me traditionalist when it comes to reading…I always loved the printed media…however with flogging shelf space at my home now…and the prices of this media device…I’m highly tempted to make the jump

They got the price right I think.

Apple has some ‘splaining to do. Why does adding a 3G radio add $129 to the price of an iPad, yet the Kindle adds the radio and lifetime service for just $50?

      Applenomics?

140 bucks is a pretty good price, but I like listening to books better

  • DROID 4 LIFE!

does it do books on tape?

    • Crusader Rabbit

No but the kindle does have a “Text-to-Speech feature”.

    what’s a kindle?

I prefer having the feeling of an open book. The two screen model would work better for me with facing pages. Otherwise I feel like I am reading a memo.

Looks great, now just support .epub and you’d be set.

    Dear Amazon,

Consider lowering to $99 for the new Kindle by the holidays and I can assure you that you’ll be sold out by January.

PS: Make sure you do everything you can to keep ebook prices as low as possible (while not hurting authors).

  • Techman

Would the kindle be available in Canada? Online maybe?

  • Kirk

Why are these things still B&W?? Give me color!

    • Brad

Because color screens create too much glare which is one of the things wrong with reading on an iPad which I have. They’re also too heavy to be e-readers which is why I just ordered one of these.

    • Orga

They’re minimizing glare, minimizing weight and maximizing battery life. Have you… have you seen a real book before? The text is usually black and white in those as well.

      • Brad

Sound like the right ideas to me- with the proper price to boot. That’s what got me to grab one for the 1st time.

  • Gonzo

If it starts rocking epub and comes down by $20, I’m sold but now you have my attention at least.

  • Fernando

Sooo, only $40 more dollars for 3G? But apple said that was expensensive and charges like $140 extra for the 3G iPad over wifi.

  • Chut Pata

Show me a dual station eBook that I can hold it with my thumb like I hold my pocket book.

  • BS Thinker

The wifi only version seems to be the right price. I can get books and still afford to drink my coffee and I can even use the free wifi to get new books.

    • BS Thinker

Unless of course the droid tables are about the same price. Then all bets are off.

Just checked video with Ian Freed, vice president of Kindle at Amazon… 4 weeks without recharge sounds great.

Battery life, price and comfort when reading are the main advantages and Kindle is doing right thing moving in that directions…
