Apple to sell unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada starting at $659

Canadians looking to score an unlocked iPhone on Friday may have to pay dearly for the carrier-free convenience being offered by Apple retail stores. According to CBC news, pricing for the unlocked version of the iPhone 4 will start at $659 — for the lower capacity 16 GB version — and climb up to $779 for the 32 GB version. If you can’t stomach the high cost of SIM-free ownership, you could always sell your soul and sign a contract with Bell, Telus, or Rogers when the handset makes its debut on July 30th.

      It’s our alway and the only one country selling the locked cell phones, so they can make more money out of your pocket,,,other countries goverment conern about thier people, than business..they changed their phone every 6 month or so, than us stuck with the two years contract, with all none sense taxes…

    Honestly I don’t know what’s going on in people’s heads these days. $659 for a freaking phone only because it has the apple logo? Is this a great marketing strategy on Apple’s part or are people just too relaxed to shop around? That price is more than most people paid for their laptops. This is insanity. People complain about gas prices but are willing to pay $659 for a phone that drops the most calls. Has the economy recovered and I don’t know it? People buying this phone most likely don’t need another phone. I understand that my comment will not sit well with some readers but I’m trying to make a point. My point is people are buying into Apple’s tricks. Very hyped overpriced products. They did the same with ipods and Mac books.

      Any phone that is unlocked to a carrier will come with a price tag like this. This is not a marketing ploy. You obviously don’t know what you are talking about when it comes to mobile phones or laptops for that matter. If you don’t like Apple products then don’t buy them, stick with Acer or whatever it is that you can get for under 659 bucks. Your comment doesn’t sit well because it doesn’t actually have any validity. Eduacate yourself first before you shoot your mouth off.

        Ha, I want to say you’re funny but sadly you’re not. It is obvious that you’re the one who needs some education on this issue. You’re clearly among the ones that buy into the hype. I educated enough to know that buying a grossly overrated product for a ridiculously outrageous price is worse than insanity. Unlike you, I do a lot of research before making a major purchase. I suggest you do the same. And just so you know, my laptop is from HP, not Acer. Feel free to use profanity when you reply. It does nothing but further demonstrate your level of intelligence.

        You will have to drop down $700 for any NEW unlocked phone. especially here in Canada. You want a new unlocked HTC HD2? $700 street price. What about a nexus one? $680.

        blackberries are a little cheaper but they don’t do anything very well other than messaging.. new 9700? $450.

        I wasn’t trying to be funny I was only stating a fact. You don’t like Apple – I get that. So why come on here and talk trash? Like I said before, if you don’t like it then don’t buy it if.

        I don’t buy into hype I buy into superior products, Apple happens to be a superior product IMHO. If you had ever used any of their products then you would know.

        FYI- Every company hypes their products it’s called marketing.

        Getting back to the phone now. Guess how much a term free (but still locked to Rogers) Blackberry Bold or HTC Magic sells for? About $600.00. Hrmm and that is still locked. Sounds like the $659 is pretty fair.

        Buying an unlocked phone is always expensive and isn’t for everyone. Either you travel a lot and want the flexibility of using multiple SIM cards in different countries or you really don’t like the idea of being tied down by a carrier. Like most people you can always buy one on a 3-year contract and probably pay $200 – $300 for the phone.

        Hey sorry I didn’t use any profanity I know you were hoping I would. Does that raise my level of intelligence now? Anyway thank you for your insightful reply. If nothing else it does assure me of one thing – No one has ever accused you of being a genius.

    I don’t understand the point. If you are foolish enough to buy an unlocked phone, and take it to a carrier, they are not going to offer you a plan any better than if you bought a subsidized phone. Most carriers will make you sign a minimum of a 1 year contract if you want a decent plan. Couple this with the fact that all carriers off substandard data and voice rates, you are screwed two ways from tuesday.

    And yes I get the fact that you can take it to any carrier, but you are also now legally able to carrier unlock your phone (thank you DMCA exemption).

    The only benefit of a carrier unlocked phone is selling it on eBay to use on an unsupported network (Verizon, t-mo, etc…)

    Agree… Apple is over-inflated and their “must-have” hype is wearing off. Android is on fire! And too.. the wave of the future are 4.3 or larger screens with increasing resolution. Oh… by the way… I use a “new” $450 Gateway 2.3 dual-core, 400 g hardrive, 4 g memory computer that matches anything Apple has to offer. Additionally, with competitors designing “slates” to exceed I-Pad … Apple better enjoy their brief time-in-the sun. These new slate offerings won’t have some silly monthy fee attached.

      Forgot to mention the Gateway has a LED screen, hdmi / dvi support which means I run two Dell 24 inch ultra-sharp monitors. And too… I had an I-phone which I dumped for Sprint’s Evo… the experience is great. Being a family of four with unlimited data and calling plan my monthly rate is $135…. did you catch that… $135 for four (4) phone…

    Holy Moly do people ever take this to heart. Talking about someone’s device or carrier choice is like insulting their mother.

    I bet you I could criticize how much you overpaid for your vehicle all day and no one would notice. It’s like this is the single most important in society and people (Geeks) would be ready to wage war over this.

    I don;t know about you but I just like the darn phone. If I can afford it,(which I can) I think I will get it. And suffer the persecutions latter. lol you geeks are too funny!!!

      I’m considering a mail forwarder in Toronto, then buying from the Apple store from Canada directly to that forwarder. There are several that can set up an account for arround $50 bucks, and that would be on top of the device pricing.

      Please let know if you figure andifferent way.

    Actually… If you have an unlocked iphone 4 you wont need to sign any contract or agreement in the states. We have prepaid plans for every budget.
