HP to pass on Windows Phone 7 and Android, focus on webOS for its smartphones

General

Wondering about the future of HP’s current iPAQ lineup of Windows Mobile handsets in light of the upcoming launch of Windows Phone 7? In an interview with CNBC, HP’s Executive Vice President Todd Bradley confirmed that the hardware giant will not be producing a Windows Phone 7 or an Android handset. As expected, HP will focus entirely on webOS for its smartphones and use its engineering, manufacturing, and distribution power to lift the struggling mobile OS. Bradley also confirmed that HP is still building the once dead, now resurrected Windows-7 tablet in a move that will presumably smooth over any feathers that were ruffled by HP’s decision not to support Windows Phone 7.

I think that if they use WP7 or ANDROID they will get in the game again.

    They should try it.

WM7 will flop, mark my word.

It is a mediocre product getting lukewarm reviews from everyone who has handled it short of those who are biased or financially connected to MS.

“From everyone”. Like you know this for a fact. I have read several glowing reviews so I guess not everyone thinks like you. “Everyone” isn’t just BGR. Their review seemed like a letter to Apple for forgiveness on their recent spate of objective reporting on the iPhone’s hardware issues.

Mark my words, WM7 will not flop.

Will it be as successful as the iPhone? Probably not. MS is not ready to make unrealistic claims and completely twist the truth like Apple. It will do well but more like a decent 3rd spot behind Apple and Android. But not flop. MS is not going to ditch this like the KIN or provide poor backing like the Zune. It needs a mobile presence. It will make sure Windows Phone succeeds.

i should hope so too! Web OS is too good not to have a strong backing.

I should hope so. They spent 1.2 billion dollars to acquire Palm, they had better put them to good use.

Well, if their phones are anything like their PC’s and laptops, I’d rather have them pass anything I’d be remotely interested in using as a phone.

Smartest decision they made, well other than buying Palm in the first place…

What choice did they have after the aquistion?

It is now HP+WebOS vs. the rest. That may not prove to be super smart though.

heads you lose .. tails you lose

I think HP is going to male a beautiful WebOS phone and I can’t wait to try it. Not that I don’t like Android or the iPhone I just like to try new things.

  • MicroNix

I’m not seeing much happening here.
    HP + phones = fail.
    Palm + phones = fail.
Are we hoping two fails make a hit?

I’m more of a team Edward fan myself

I, personally, would love to see a WebOS phone and tablet.

The palm pre was the only good palm phone and I don’t think of ever seen an hp phone in person they’re just not that popular. Palm phones always looked cheap and plastic so if HP can make a sexy handset and load it with webOS,and market it really well, they could really get in the game. Technology is always changing :)

good!..I think WebOS would be Very cool!

The real question is if developers will get behind another platform to release great apps on. With the marketshare that android and apple have been picking up as of late, it seems that is where devs are going. I could be wrong, just my .02

  • btdown

I don’t get it…WebOs failed to sell…So HP buys it, and then hopes to bet their phone/tablet future on it?
Am I in some sort of bizzarro world?

    • QuickWeevil

webOS’s inability to sell had nothing to do with webOS itself. It was a combination of Palm’s inability to market it properly, a 6-month exclusive contract with Sprint, and shoddy hardware. webOS is the best mobile platform you can find now-a-days. Match it with hardware similar to that of the Droid X or iPhone 4 and it would be the best phone you could buy.

I’ve had two HP/Compaq computers and they were both crap. I’m torn….I love WebOS (currently using a Pre+) but HP has not won me over. I’m curious as to what they can deliver but color me pessimistic.

  • T

Wow… this got it’s own news story? Just in case nobody figured it out for themselves when they bought Palm….

  • E__P

Damn that HP logo is HUGE!!! I’m sure BGR will fix it soon, stay tuned!

  • craphos

    webos is dead

  • Bad@$$

HP–big mistak, you should pay attention to what your customers want. They want Android and WM7 devices.. getting WebOS will be the death of Palm OS crap…
