RIM shows off BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6 for Windows

BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6

This isn’t quite as exciting as yesterday’s BlackBerry 6 OS screen shot gallery, but RIM continues to show that it is dutifully marching forward. RIM has posted images of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6 on their Inside BlackBerry blog. Aside from a new, darker look, Desktop Manager 6 will be able to sync media — that’s music, pictures, and video — to and from your BlackBerry in a more seamless and organized manner. The user options are more clearly labeled, and the overall flow of the application looks much better. Hit the read link to have a peak for yourself.

    Huh…RIM finally makes the news.

I’d personally rather have a cloud backup like Android instead. However the manual sync method would be much more enjoyable if it didn’t take so long and freeze up all the time.

Would be nice to just drag and drop files easily into the BB SD card.

Idk, I love my Android devices, but I still wish they had a way to manually backup EVERYTHING on the device including application data using a desktop client. You know, just in case.

I have the Drod Captivate and can’t figure out how do you do full back up?

We’ve been able to do that for years. I do it on my BB Pearl 8100 all the time with a 4GB card. You gotta turn on “Mass Storage” mode so that it can be seen and accessed as a removable drive when you connect it to the USB.

      • Tdot34

I Second that, enable mass storage mode which pops up when you plug in your phone, or it can be done in desktop manager, access your phone in My Computer and you can access your SD card or phones internal memory to drag and drop any file you wish.

Looks sort of like the Mac version…let’s hope is doesn’t function the same way. Every time I tried to update software using the Mac version, it failed.

Same here, what a nightmare that was.

Maybe this will be the version to finally support Office 2010?

    • Jason

That’s what I was about to ask. I just got a new employee and they want to use their Blackberry and we’re not going to bloat our servers with their crap for one person. Just installed Desktop Manager and doesn’t seem to like Outlook 2010 and I was about to start looking for a workaround until I saw this post.

      • Tdot34

What crap? And what bloated software, are you sure you didn’t mean iPhone with its itunes BS and not Blackberry. BES Express or Desktop Manager are pretty simple programs.

      • Jason

I don’t want BES Express on my servers for 1 user. Every other smartphone natively works with exchange. We do not allow iPhones in our company as well.

      • Mjktechgeek

There Is no workaround for Office 2010, which is absurd. Blackberries are supposed to be business devices aren’t they? RIM says BDM will be compatible sometime in August but only with 32-bit Office and Outlook. RIM has also stated they don’t know when or if they will support a 64-bit version. RIM might as well start packing their bags because Android and Apple will soon dominate the corporate markets!

      • Jason

As long as iTunes is involved, Apple will not even penetrate the “corporate” market.

Wish they had a Mac beta.

This is just new lipstick on an old pig.

Blackberry’s current desktop manager couldn’t be worse for Mac.

    WOW!

I use a BES at work so I’ve had wireless syncing for 5+ years. The only thing that you will lose is what’s on the media card. BES 5.x will even back up your apps.

And this new version DM does not impress me one bit until they allow WiFi syncing. iTunes needs it too. Why o’ why do we have to physically connect a mobile device to a PC/Mac to transfer media???

    RIM and an Apple FAIL

  • sean76

Ok great, now where the heck are the new Devices….

  • Perspective

Yeah the absence of wi-fi sync is really slowing Apple down. My stock value has only doubled in the last year.
Meanwhile, the Zune’s had wi-fi syncing since its inception. . .and no one buys it, and Microsoft has been flat for ten years.

    • http://justSkate.me netposer

Either has a faulty antenna on the iPhone 4. Says a lot about people who buy Apple products.

This is so old school. Everyone is trying to move to the cloud and here is RIM tying ppl to a computer?
I love how I DON’T HAVE TO connect my N1 to my laptop for anything.

  • BB9K

I hope RIM will address the fix for Media Sync which as of now does not support syncing music from network shares (without mapped) and grey’s out all playlists that have songs on the network?
