55.5% of Android users running version 2.1

Android Numbers July 14th

Google has released their latest Android platform distribution numbers, and it looks like Android 2.1 — Eclair — is dominating. In a report from last month, Google reported 50% of the Android install-base was running version 2.1 of the mobile operating system, however, in just one months time that number has jumped 5.5%. Other highlights include Android 2.2 (Froyo) having 3.3% of the platform pie, with Android 1.6 registering in at 22.1% and Android 1.5 at 18.9%. Apparently, Android 2.0 and 2.0.1 have fallen into the “statistically insignificant” category. Hopefully, when the next report comes out, Android 2.2 will have a much bigger slice of the pie… if you know what we mean.

as long as it is android i don’t care. Give me 1.5 anyday. Lol.

  • open source is just a phrase

    Aw yes another fragmentation map

No actually it would all say 4.0.1 im pretty sure with the exception of maybe the first iphone that is nearing the 4 year mark. In fact, last time i checked apple hasn’t released several new phones with old OSes in the same year as new phones with the latest OS. That would just be silly and very androidish.

Do you know anyone running iOS4 on a 3G. I heard firsthand that it is a horrible experience.

      Way to slow.

      • JMR

It’s beyond horrible. It all but bricked my phone.

You need to do a Restore instead of an Update. Made a big difference on my 3G.

strange, I didn’t realize that June 2007 (iPhone 2G launch) was 4 years ago.

    Wow!

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

The technology transformation cannot happen all of a sudden, it takes time. People using devices which run Android 2.1 are used to it and feel comfortable in using it. That doesn’t mean that they will not switch to Android 2.2, it will happen; but consumes some amount of switch time. Because, tech people always tend to test out the product before switching to latest version or updates. If found reliable enough, its takes mere few minutes to download and install the new version.

Yeah my iPhone 3G is incredibly slow after the update, I think I’m going to have to buy a new one

    • JMR

*facepalm* This is exactly what Apple wants you to do! For the love of God, just go back to 3.1.3. It’s not that hard.

How many of the 1.5 and 1.6 devices have an upgrade path? I had thought that at least some didn’t have the hardware to upgrade to 2.0+.

    • NumbersGuy

Let’s see, wasn’t the Behold II a 1.5 device? That’s a dead end. And I’m getting the feeling that Motoblur (1.6) — aside from the often promised, but still undelivered CLIQ XT update — isn’t going to see the light of day.

    @mr fragmentation

It would still read with different os as you have to connect your phone to update. Some people (granted few) rarely hook up their phones to a computer. So yes you have many people who have not yet updated manually (still can’t believe it doesn’t do ota updates) to ios4. That is a fact.

Perhaps that number would be higher if the small-minded thinkers at Google and Motorola stopped to think that there are some Mac users out there that actually prefer Android. The only way for me to upgrade my Milestone in Canada from v2.01 to v2.1 is via a Windows computer. Sorry, no go – I’m a Mac user. Gee, here’s a thought: either have a Mac executable update or an OTA update.

Wake up Google – just because your mobile OS competes with iPhone doesn’t mean that all of us Android users don’t own a Mac.

This really wouldn’t be happening if the manufacturers didn’t slap a nasty skin over the android OS. Honestly, the best one would have to be HTC’s sense, and even then I wouldnt trade the stock experience for it. Hopefully by the time gingerbread comes out manufacturers will stop altering android, they’re only putting more work on themselves anyway.

I make my own androids in my back yard.

Samsung Galaxy S here with 2.1 Eclair. Definitely nice, but I’m still hoping Sammy’ll send a little frozen yogurt my way. Another fragmentation note: why, if Samsung is trying to increase their smartphone market share, did they rebrand their Galaxy S to a different name on all 4 carriers? My “Samsung Captivate” says “Galaxy S” on the back!
