Skype 2.1

Here is a little ray of sunshine for all you iOS 4 Skype users out there. Skype has just released a new version of their iPhone application, and it supports multitasking! The build is officially listed as 2.0.1 in the App Store, however the release notes read:

Version 2.1

  • Run Skype in the background with multitasking in iOS4. Receive Skype calls and IM while other apps are running or when your iPhone is locked. You can also continue your call while you switch to another application.
  • Sadly, there is no support for video chat with the iPhone 4′s front facing camera. Maybe next time. Hit up the read link to open up iTunes and grab the new bits.Read (iTunes Link)

I guess that explains why Skype went missing for a few weeks from the App Store..

I have an iPhone 3G. How do I get skype to work in the background?

      • ScubaSteve

well I guess you didnt read where it says iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS only…if you want to background. Being that you can’t background on iPhone 3G unless you jailbreak to begin with.

I would like to know how much longer Android users will need to wait for Skype support. Verizon is the only one with support with their Android devices and they’ve said “later in the year” it will come to others, but a more specific timeline would be great.

Wow, this seems to detect jailbroken iPhone 3Gs and forcibly kills the app when you have it in the background.

      • got2trythis

yep. It does not work on JB phones. I cannot believe these monkeys.

        • meia

Great news for all of the iPhone users out there. I just wish Skype would finally get an official Android App so that I can enjoy using the service again. Hopefully soon?

This app finally got the update yet, the crap doesnt support videocalling yet wth? Thanks for not having it on your app but deleting it off a perfectly good 3rd party app. Such business these people

Skype announced on their blog today that they were scrapping plans to start charging for calls over 3G. Granted, that’s probably so when they introduce video chat and a fee for using it over 3G people won’t have AS much to complain about.

well, glad to hear that skype for 3G is free.
“Well, it’s about time. Touted back in March as one of the pillar apps to benefit from the new multitasking API, Skype has finally been updated to iOS 4 compatibility.” and good update!

This is a great feature and I also think that they add the video chat support for the iPhone 4. And I am glad that they drop the idea to charge skype-to-skype calls.
