Rumor: Verizon Wireless switching to tiered data plans later this month?

Engadget is reporting that Verizon Wireless may switch to tiered smartphone data plans — similar to AT&T — starting on July 29th. The blog cites the same source who is prognosticating an August 12th release of the DROID 2 (along with some sort of Star Wars limited edition version with R2-D2 on the back). No details on pricing, data caps, or terms were listed in the report. We don’t have to stretch our minds very far to imagine this happening, but let us hope this piece of intel retains its rumor status well past the 29th. We’ve reached out to Verizon for comment and will update if we hear back. Thoughts?

I use around 13GB or more a month. I tether my droid to my laptop for internet so this will definitly affect us that tether! Not cool!

    • uh huh

      So.

      Tethering huh.

Which is against the T&C’s of your contract if you’re not using an approved VZW feature.

      Which since you’re using 13gb you’re not.

You are part of the problem.

    • Normz

Its ok. They cant take it away from You. You just.. cant upgrade lol

      • Josh

They can cancel his contract. In their wording, it says basically, if you are using more than 5 GB, we assume that you are breaking the TOS agreement, and you may be given one warning, after which you will have your contract terminated. At least it did last I looked.

I think as long as you have unlimited data before they change to tiered you can keep your current unlimited. Otherwise if they force you to change they are breaking the terms of the contract and that gives you an out to cancel w/o any ETF. I think AT&T users who had unlimited before they went tiered are grandfathered in like that. Just never take it off and you can’t lose it.

Just don’t ever upgrade your phone again, either… as the last two smart phone upgrades I did, the rep ever so kindly put me on the $45 plan instead of the $30 plan, so they could “accidentally” put you on the new tiered plan and you won’t be able to go back, OOOOPS!!! NOT!

    • freakoffashion01

So everybody! Start buying your phones retail…..

      • Aaron

Unless they start requiring / mandating you have a certain NEW feature on the NEW phone, no matter where you go it or what you paid for it, just like Verizon and the 9.99 data add on for many Qwerty phones…

Too bad we don’t have REAL wireless competition in this country. Two gigantic (nearly, “too big to fail”) wireless providers and two other strugglers, only one of which is GSM.

Damn sucks that all of you who love android will just swich back to dumbphones, I hope u don’t have to America is stupid enough already lmao..!!!

  • patrick

I wonder if this has anything to do with the letter vzw sent me offering one month free service? Hmm. Grandfather all the way. My X will hold me for a long while. So would my original droid.

if Sprint hangs on to their great pricing structure then a huge wave upon wave of expiring 2 year contractees will be switching to their network. Savings becomes king for consumers after the early adopter fever subsides!! AT&T /Verizon will truly understand this concept soon.

    • Waldo

      Oh T-Mobile too.

      • SoccerGuy

Sure, if you can deal with the bad customer service and cell phone service…

While the tiered data may eventually happen, I don’t think it will be the 29th of this month. I am a Verizon Premium retailer, and whenever big changes are on the horizon, we have training documents sent out. We also get store visits from our VZW sales and data consultants to confirm we got the training materials, and in most cases, we are required to attend a training hosted by Verizon. None of this has happened. Before the Alltel purchase, we had 2 months of preparation. Before the requirement of data on 3G multimedia phones, we had weeks of preparation. Again, not to say it won’t happen, but it’s highly unlikely this soon.

This plan does not effect current customers. Only the new customers. I’m sure verizon will announce this soon. Once they announce it, I’m gonna call them and get a smart phone and stick to the unlimited data. That is all you have to do if you want a smart phone.

  • chris

Oh, and you who are saying Verizon customers are accepting of this and AT&T is the only one getting bashed have obviously not read the rest of the posts in this forum.

  • Swagger

Yet again you Big Red sheep are giving VZ a free pass.

  • VZWEmp

If we were switching in 8 days I am sure we would have heard something… but I guess they do sometimes dump things on us. I’d even be upset… I like using my phones data plan… I really wouldn’t want to get tiered.

  • VZWEmp2

It won’t happen until 4G. Its a big selling poing right now.

Verizon loves to follow ATT’s bad moves.
    1) ATT gets exclusive license for Iphone
-Verizon “We cant pay to get such a nice phone, we arent ATT”
    2) ATT Charges $30, for 3G Data
-Verizon “If ATT can get away with it, so should we”
    3) ATT offers rollover minutes
-Verizon… “We cant offer rollover minutes, we’re not ATT”
    4) ATT offers Data Caps
    -Verizon offers Data Caps

    • VZWEmp2

Not one of your examples shows one company following another…..

  • john

Actually att changes when verizon changes, this will be a first

  • gabez

Hopefully not because I’ve only had my new phone for a week and I’ve already used over 2 gigs of data

  • WT

One thing to note is that Verizon’s data plan has been limited to 5GB for years. I tether and I can use 3GB at most and that’s through viewing videos and such. Nothing crazy, but like an average web user such as view web pages.
With that mention, since we’ve been dealing with the 5GB cap for a while and the likelyhood of it going away is slim, then a tier plan isn’t a terrible idea. It would make sense to increase the cap once LTE is entirely deployed but for now lets say 5GB was the cap.
For regular users, we’re paying around 30 bucks a month for 5GB of bandwidth. I have relatives that normally stay within 1GB per month, since they only use their smartphones for a email, mobile sport scores and such, mobile videos and high bandwidth websites aren’t as a big of a deal to them. If they can do something like what SB605 mentioned, then it might seem like a good idea for the time being.
Lets say 10 bucks for 1GB, 20 for 2GB, and 30 for 5GB for example. Sounds like a pretty decent deal to me. I have 4 lines, and 2 of them with a data plan. I use around 2-3GB a month and the other uses 800mb-1GB a month. If I can cut 20 bucks off the other line, that’s 20 bucks I can use to add data for another line for someone else.
It’s a nice idea if you consider the cap already in place, and if the price to bandwidth ratio is more balanced.

    • Toma

Good to read a post that puts the issue in very relative terms. Thanks

      • mike

yeah, except any pricing estimates we come up with are likely too low. My guess is if you use more data than just checking email and occasionally browsing the web, you are going to have to choose between using less data or paying more. Verizon is obviously making this move to increase revenue which it feels it has cheated itself out of by offering unlimited data.

GPRS router to connect to Ethernet , the Ethernet, users can share online . It has Ethernet RJ45 interface with Address Translation (NAT), DMZ host functions. GPRS router communication features: * Wireless , a large amount of data communication * Communication effect depends on the GPRS network construction * GPRS network construction at this stage is mature , GPRS data communication stability, and data transfer speed , huge advantages. Downlink speeds of up to 70kbit / s or so , upstream speeds up to 40kbit / s or so . Beijing test speed downlink 60kbit / s or so , uplink speed 30kbit / s or so .
