Facebook confirmed on Wednesday that the social network has 500 million active users, a figure that puts MySpace, Ning, LinkedIn, and even Twitter to shame. Facebook continues its impressive growth, adding 100 million users since February and boasts of the following the statistics:

  • 500 million active users
  • 50% of users login on any given day
  • People spend 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook
  • More than 25 billion pieces of content (links to news stories and blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) are shared each month
  • More than 100 million active users currently acces Facebook through their mobile devices

Whether you like Facebook or not, those stats are undeniably impressive and assure Facebook its title of social networking king for the foreseeable future.  Though its #1 position is solidified, the next six months will be interesting to watch. Will Facebook continue its exponential growth to one billion and beyond, or has it reached its plateau? While we wait to find out, you can spend some of those 500 billion monthly minutes checking out BGR’s Facebook page.

Facebook is making millions of dollars just hit 500 million subscibers and is becoming a culture staple. Im pretty sure thats a win for them… a pretty damn big win.

      • JakeyBoy

and how many of those subscribers are legit….

If despite Google’s “takeover” of Zynga they stay on facebook. The chances are that Facebook will exceed 6 billion as each real person will end up with some 100 fake accounts.

  • wanderer

Got over 300 friends on FB, however more private info to siphon making Zuckerberg more of a billionaire. Not bad for giving away what folks think of as a “free” program.

So this is why my farmville is slow. Dang users

    • Chut Pata

You play farmville? Add me. I have hundreds of neighbors and I will add you on all of my 10 fake accounts. LOL.

Out of those 500 million users, how many are duplicate accounts? People forget passwords and abandon accounts and create news ones. Others just plain have more than one account. Still, it is impressive but will at some point taper off. After all, there are so many people on this planet and only so many of them have computers.

    • Cha_pimp

Mobile Facebook maybe the future tho.. tons of people just check their facebook on their mobile devices.

    @wanderer

Are those 300, “friends” or real friends? Fakebook needs to die…they’re just lucky the child predators didn’t take them down like they did myspace. MysphacebookinkedInter

    • Chut Pata

There are sites on facebook where you can put your ID (usually a fake one just for games) and shout “ADD ME”. This way you can have 500 mafia member or 100 farmville neighbors in no time. I have 550 strong mafia and personally know only 5 of them maybe.

I think what’s most interesting is that Facebook is virtually banned in China, which means that portion of the world population shouldn’t even be counted in the percentage of the whole. Add to that how many people in other countries don’t have reliable or practical computer access and this is actually a pretty big success for Facebook.

  • justin

i think they’ve got those 500 billion minutes per month mixed up with people who just have a Facebook window open half the day while they’re doing ten other more interesting or important things

    file this under WGAF.

This is crazy. Is Myspace still making more money than FaceB? Wasn’t it that Facebook had all the members and Myspace had all the money? Hopefully Facebook doesn’t turn into Myspace, or worse, Friendster.

Actually, I could see something cool happening if Facebook and Myspace merged or soemthing. Myspace has all the interactive tools, as in users have a bit more control over their profiles and privacy, but Facebook destroys when it comes to connectivity, social circles, all that jazz. I think both camps should meet up and brainstorm for a bit.

490 Million are accounts of people who are likely never to actually use Facebook.

  • http://splashbanana.wordpress.com Shinx2ran

that’ll we be just more than good… I wonder how many people on this earth? how many % people using facebook?

  • Ed

Somehow I have a feeling that it breaks down like this:

200 million members – spam accounts selling Viagra
150 million members – spam accounts selling refinance packages
80 million members – spam accounts selling weight loss programs
10 million members – spam accounts selling vacation homes in costa rica
10 million members – spam accounts selling other garbage
50 million members – real people

  • Mo Chedda

check out youropenbook.org facebook is soooo unsecure and it should die just like myspace, why cant people live in the real world and enjoy life and nature, 500 million people are STUPID for join facebook in the first place

  • http://www.aer-conditionat-whirlpool.ro AerConditionat

From those 500 million users, i think half of them are unique; the other half are the same users with their second account. Now you can break down like Ed did

  • wanderer

@LazyKid, All my 300 friends are real friends my wife and I know personally. Almost half are family the other half work acquaintances and friends.

They may have 500 million users but how many of those accounts are the same people. I am not trying to discredit facebook but I know of quite a few people with two and three accounts.

    • MONOPOLY MAN

must be an echo in here…”is this thing on?”

    • Chut Pata

“I know of quite a few people with two and three accounts.” These guys are rare. They must there for relationship instead of gaming. If they were for gaming, they would have 5-10 fake accounts (I have 10).

Its a mad-mad-world!!!!! Great going Facebook. This is not a small achievement, it expects lots of dedication, will power, intelligence and effort to acquire it. Congrats FB.

  • Andrew Lamarra

I just wanted to comment here saying that I’m not one of those 500 million!

  • Chut Pata

I have over 100 real connections. Each connection has 5-10 fake IDs. This way they create 5-10 fake accounts in Farmville, MafiaWars etc to give themselves gifts, increase their number of neighbors and to help themselves in jobs like barn raising. Then a lot many people invite to become my neighbors and they turn out to be spammers advertising Viagra or Russian hookers. My estimate is, out of 500 million, about 5 million are real and rest are fake or expired.
