Responding to an online poll conducted by website Tech-Ex, AT&T gave the world some indication of what their dropped-call rate actually is. Tech-Ex conducted a reader poll that indicated AT&T’s dropped-call — for its readers — was around 4.5% for March of 2010; conversely, Verizon Wireless’ rate came in at 1.5% for the same period. The poll obviously did not sit well with AT&T and a spokesperson responded with a statement and some percentages of their own.

Statistically valid drive test shows the AT&T network continues to deliver the nation’s fastest 3G network and near best-in-class call retainability nationwide. AT&T’s network dropped only 1.44 percent of calls nationwide, within two-tenths of 1 percent of the industry leader and a difference of less than two calls out of 1,000.

Those results, from GWS, show that, on a national basis, AT&T is within just two-tenths of a percent of the industry leader in wireless call retainability. That’s a difference of just two calls in a thousand, a virtual dead-heat.

As you can see, AT&T’s data paints a much different picture with a 1.44% dopped-call rate. What do you think? Go ahead and have yourself a little network rant in the comments.

Granted, AT&T has some holes in their network, as all wireless carriers do, but if you do a little research of your own, you’ll find that most dropped call complaints against AT&T’s network come from iPhone owners. I’ve never dropped a call with my old Palm TREO 680 or my Nexus One on the AT&T network, but it’s a real problem with my iPhone 3GS. The problem is most iPhone users are unaware of each other’s plight and most are so in love with their devices that they don’t want to know.

Every day that goes by makes me more and more glad that I use a Droid on Verizon; not an iPhone on AT&T.

As an AT&T user, I can say that their dropped call rate on my phone alone is somewhere around 10-25%. That accounts for usage in the CA Central Valley and the CA Bay Area. Rarely am I on a call exceeding 5 minutes without it being dropped at least once, if not multiple times.

AT&T must have thier head in the sand. I would love to see these stats by major city. I’m in DC and AT&T is unacceptably bad especially during heavy commute times. I finally paid to get out of the ATT contract and got a Droid Incredible on Verizon. Wow – what a difference and dramatic improvement. And if you dont use your iphone for music (like me), the Droid is arguably equal or better. Oh, I can I watch flash!!!

I have had AT&T for three years. The only time my call drops out is when I speak with a friend of mine who is a former Alltel customer, now a Verizon customer, thanks to the buy-out. She says she loses calls all the time.
