Samsung working on "unbreakable" AMOLED displays

What’s going to be harder to get than a Samsung Super AMOLED display? An unbreakable Samsung AMOLED display of course! OLED-Display.net is reporting that within the next two years Samsung is aiming to have ultra-rugged, unbreakable smartphone screens available to OEMs. The report does not detail whether the digitizer will be included on this unbreakable AMOLED display — the digitizer is what registers touch input and what makes a Super AMOLED display “super” — but if we had to guess, we’d say probably not. You don’t have to take anyones word on the staying power of these new panels. Hit the jump to see what happens when a mallet meets a prototype of this flexible, bendable, very-hard-to-breakable, AMOLED display (spoiler alert: it doesn’t break).

      Coming to a iPhone 5 soon…

Well actually what makes a super amoled “super” is that it is much more viewable in sunlight than standard amoled. Whats so special about the digitizer?

The difference between AMOLED and Super AMOLED is that Samsung combined the digitizer and OLED screen into one, instead of two separate things. That’s why it’s so much more vivid and looks better in the sun.

    Cool

Yes very cool, but the song in the video was my favorite part.

      • Giorgio

Yeah, the song is appropriately named AMOLED. Hahaha.

        Dambi & After School.

Not a prayer, if it didn’t break how could steve sell you another one.

Unbreakable display, but useless as a phone … that’ll be unique … It will make a handy portable anvil.

I’m sure the isheep would pay up big time for it if Steve blows some more smoke up their collective asses.

This Display is for the next iPhone.

    Wasn’t the Titanic “unsinkable”?

opens up a whole world of possibilities… roll up screens anyone?

  • B

How in the world can anyone say this is for the next iPhone and this isnt even coming out until or before 2012, you kno you iPhone nut cases kill me, this is for all OEM’s not just apple so even if it is in a iPhone eventually it would be the 6 generation seeing how a new iphone comes out every year, and even if it got the new amoled it still won’t be better than the next phone that has that screen as well.

This technology looks absolutly amazing. This is something I’ve been waiting for. With this application, you can have screens in your car, your phone or anywhere!

    Imagine the potential… oled pants..

    • Killah Kyle

There’s already touch screens in cars and on phones.

    Silly demo.

Their AMOLED layer has no glass layer on the demo.

The alternative thing they break has a glass layer.

Of course the non-glass layer will not shatter and the glass will.

Call me again, when they’ve come up with a way to use their new indestructible AMOLED without a glass layer.

    • politicalslug

My thoughts exactly. One had a piece of glass over it, the other was just the flat amoled panel. We’ve seen these flexible panels from a number of manufacturers and none of them are capable of “shattering”.

BUT!!!! The question is Will it blend???
