Nokia looking for new CEO

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that mobile giant Nokia is on the hunt for a new CEO. The WSJ claims the motivating factor is the current CEO’s “struggle to find traction for the company in the market for high-end smartphones.” The source went on to say that the company is very serious about this matter and should have a decision rendered by “the end of this month.” What do you think? Too little too late? Or is a change of leadership exactly what Nokia needs right now?

They’re not late, but boy do they have their work cut out for them regarding high-end smartphones! I still would like to see them succeed one way or the other.

I would too — loved my Nokias in the late ’90s — but their new CEO will have to change the entire corporate culture. First of all:

Take their coolest phone in the pipeline and port it to Android. Yes, ANDROID. Developers have shown they’re completely uninterested in ANY Nokia OS, no matter how sexy and powerful it may be. But Nokia has shown it can make sensational hardware, and with the Android app library, they’d attract hoards of consumers (like me) with fond memories of their indestructible old Nokias of yore.

Partner with Microsoft — not now, but six months down the road, when Windows Phone is foundering at retail, but the Windows Phone 7 OS finally has copy-and-paste and other current omissions. Nokia would probably cut a pretty sharp deal with a Microsoft desperate for traction, and together, they could make big inroads in corporate markets.

Yeah I agree. You can’t blame them for trying. The Nokia E71X was a complete and total failure but there’s no way this Swiss giant is going down without a fight.

Maybe they could ask Steve Jobs if he’s interested. Aparently you can make a piece of crap if your him and people will still buy it..

Swiss giant? Of course, why not. At least its in europe.

      Haha!

Did you know this Finnish company used to make rubber boots before cell phone? Explains a lot. LOL

  • Allen Walker

Lol oops. Guess it’s Finish not Swiss..ˈnÉ”kiÉ‘

They had great success in the late 90′s and the start of the millennium: WTF happened. Maybe they should court Lowell McAdam; nevermind, he’s busy pushing the Microshit KIN phones.

Every thing needs change because changes make the thing better and better. If you stops any where and not move then you left behind the race. Same with Nokia if there is need to change then they should have to take some bold steps for the betterment of company.

Wonder if Jon Rubenstein is under a no compete
agreement? Given Nokia’s resources, he could
be a very compelling choice, as Palm’s main issues
were the excruciating lack thereof. With Nokia’s
    development budget…. perhaps great things.

there is nothing wrong with nokia and there nothing right with ios and android. It just (intentional?)american bad business press, which is hurting nokia’s image

I think now is a great time for them to shake it up. As Sprint’s latest CEO, Dan “The Hess Truck” Hesse, has shown us, it’s never too late to plug a sinking ship IF it has a sound core.

They need to come out swinging hard and fast though, because the handset industry is starting to move less like a slow jog and more like a full out sprint to the finish line.

Very interesting news indeed. I have been a long time Nokia supporter so I am happy to hear this news. Nokia has seemed indifferent to all the market changes and had back to back horrendous launches for both the N97 and the N900. Maemo is a joke and the latest Symbian OS is lackluster. An Android based phone would seem logical but I still think become a full on hardware vendor at this point is bitter pill to swallow for Nokia. But it may actually be their saving grace at this point in the smartphone market. Currently I am on the Palm Pre Plus b/c of ATT’s crappy network. If Nokia were to do something drastic to make their smartphone devices and reinvigorate the active developers out there to create apps for their smartphones then I would consider returning to their handsets. For the time being at my first love “Palm/HP”. I’ll wait and watch what Nokia does with their new CEO appointment.

This is a much needed move for them. They’ve hung their hat on Symbian OS for way too long and they should have been looking forward more. I think they’ve had some good advances on other operating systems, but they just can’t seem to get it right. I think they need to concentrate on other OS’s and start catching up before it’s too late.

The 4th generation iPhone has just been launched.
In just over 3 years Apple has moved from nowhere – to the the most profitable handset maker in the world. Passing Nokia in early 2009.

In that time Nokia’s only response has been to ignore it and dismiss it. And tell people how many units they sell.

Nokia did not just fail to see where the market was going in the future. They failed to see it even after it happened.

The fault is they have allowed their business agenda to be set by engineers. And engineers are the wrong people to run consumer electronics businesses.

      Excellent points.
Nokia had a chance back when before Apple released the iPhone Nokia was working on a touch screen type but I think it only came out for Europe. If they had seized that opportunity before Apple had launched the iPhone maybe who knows? Does anyone remember which Nokia model that was? It had a touch interface.

    Allen Walker:

On the contrary, no one bought the iPod Hi-Fi. You really should check your facts first (and get a map).

  • NumbersGuy

A headhunter called me about this yesterday…Nah, I’m kidding.

I wonder how long they’ve been looking because if it’s a recent decision then finding a replacement in two weeks sounds like crazy talk.

  • Aaron

I would like the position as CEO of Nokia. I am qualified and can lead Nokia to places Apple, Google, HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony and Motorola can only dream of.

If the Nokia decision-makers are reading this, please give me a call at (865) 809-6735 to discuss compensation and potential start dates.

    Thank you.

Smartest thing Nokia can do is embrace WM7. NOK and MSFT need each other IMO.

  • Jouten

    Wow. Just wow…

Isn’t anyone else just SICK of the brick slab of a phone form factor? Seriously?

I have an HTC Hero (GSM) and I own an iPod 3G w/ iOS4. The lag on the Hero is just too much for me right now. I don’t really care for having a touchscreen phone anymore and am going to order an ‘old as dirt’ E72 and two box it with my iPod.

Maybe I’m just too old fashioned, but I’m just getting really tired of everyone telling me that I can only get an iPhone or a Droid phone and that anything else I might want is ‘old’.

    • Aaron

Then dont purchase the phone for everyone else. Research a phone that will fit your specific needs and go after it! theres ALOT of other phones out there. smartphones that are not touch screen “try blackberry if you havnt yet” and not the older ones. check out the 9700. It will do anything and everything the average person could ever really USE Minus washing your clothes and doing the dishes.

  • kiran

    About time…
Fix Symbian for this generation phones or jump on the Andriod bandwagon. Maybe improve the “style”factor on the design a little bit.

This will get Nokia back on track. I used to love Nokia back in the day when a phone was a phone but now everyone wants more…

  • iFlossâ„¢

I understand they haven’t released any new smartphones but this decision should be made once Meebo is out and we get to see the turnout of their next best thing.

  • dee

Please nokia inprove your hardware, and consolidate your OS I think that there are 4 of them have 1 or two and just do it right, Nokia has high end , midrange cell running the same ram ex5800 and n97 and start selling some subsidized phone. I might help if they hire an american
