RIM updates Locate Service, GPS-free location queries now possible

BlackBerry Locate Geolocation

Today, RIM announced an update to its BlackBerry Locate Service that will allow developers to use GPS-free cellular triangulation to acquire location information in their apps. As RIM states:

Users can be indoors with no GPS coverage, but your app will still be able to guide them to restaurants or points of interest (POI) around them. Although the accuracy of the fixes obtained from the Geolocation service may not always be as high as with GPS, it has use cases for apps that require highly accurate GPS fixes as well as apps that do not. Apps that require high accuracy can use this service to quickly show the user an approximate location while it waits for a more accurate location fix using GPS. This can offer a huge user experience improvement. For applications that do not require high accuracy, this service can be leveraged as a simple yet effective mechanism to provide location information.

Obviously this technology is not new, as it has been in use by many platforms for quite some time, but it is nice to see RIM continuing to add functionality to the BlackBerry platform, and we know from first-hand experience, that this is a very, very useful service for BlackBerry developers.

I’ve been using Cell-tower location with Google Maps for BlackBerry since like 2007!

    What’s new here?

The big deal for me, is that my company has locked down all 3rd party downloads or installs. So I can’t use Google maps on my work phone. Very frustrating.

I’ve been waiting on this for at least 3 yrs.

The BlackBerry is a business device for which these features are useless. IT departments don’t care about these features, and consumers don’t care about the BlackBerry ever since the Droid hit Verizon Now that consumers on Verizon no longer need to settle for what is clearly the slide rule of smartphones, the fact that RIM has yet to build a compelling consumer product pushes then even further behind. But hey, I’m sure that tablet will be great.

IT departments care about such features especially when you have thousands of devices around. BlackBerry is for business, work and power users. The mainstream consumers can continue playing with their cool iPhone. Stay tuned!

What power user uses a blackberry?
Before this it took like an hour to get a loc fix

I always use the “send location” feature in bbm to show people where I am so they know or can use gps to get to me. Great feature.

I was under the impression BB has had assisted GPS for quite a while. This must be a RIM specific upgraded version.

The advantage over Googles service is that RIMs network will be more reliable (and probably more accurate since they have access to more cell tower data), and they’re not as likely to be selling your personal data.

Of course enterprise is interested in LBS. It’s the next big thing.
