Symbian released the source code for the S^4 homescreen application on Friday and posted up a gallery of images that provides a quick glimpse of the UI for the next generation Symbian operating system. The screengrabs show the homescreen with a clock widget, application categories, search, wallpaper selector, and more. One image is above and the remaining six are after the jump. Take a look and let us know your first impressions of Symbian^4 in the comments.

Really dark ages look and way outdated. Give it up.

  • isis

    I agree…it looks pretty bad

  • kerrhome

    I concur. Looks so old.

  • Steve Jobz

    Symbian is dead.

  • Jack

I see they placed some buttons on the top of the screen. IMOH, this is not user friendly as our fingers can hardly reached the top when using one hand operation

Why is it that everyone must insist on only two flavors of ice cream? Why can’t there be a Symbian flavor? Why just iOS or Android? I would like to see more options then just them two. I want to see Symbian succeed and I want to see re-emergence of WebOS too.

      I love educated comments!

Because now there’s a well designed and well funded closed and open os, iOs and Android. Beyond that, if you’re gonna make a new os, either make it on par in all aspecs or at least be innovative and bring something new and unique to the market like wp7. Don’t give us this outdated ugly bs.

      • Andrew

Exactly. I’m all for more smartphone variety if it’s fresh and intresting. This looks like Android 1.5, and even that’s generous. These are just early shots, but it’s getting off on the wrong foot.

  • Fanboyardee

OMG I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

I think all the OS’ are going for the same look. I appreciate IOS and android and hell even WP7. But there needs to be a little originality. Android is floating towards apple’s layout. If there a little bit of difference, I can embrace it. Otherwise everything will be a cookie cutter layout. IMHO.

Holy shit wtf are these pics suppose to be? From 1998?

  • omg

the current symbian looks a lot nicer than this. theonly nice component is the drag panel above the numpad.

It’s obviously still under development. Hell, the keypad doesn’t even have a # sign. I do think the pop up/pull down option windows need a border, or something besides a white background and off color text. WTF will happen when I install a plain white wallpaper? I agree with the commentor that says the top bar pull down shade ala android is inconvenient to get to when you’re one handing a phone. If you’re going to ‘borrow’ ideas, why not take a cue from Sony’s Android UI (the name escapes me, and i’m one too many Sierra Nevada’s deep to care to google it) and put ‘docked’ icons on the four corners of the screen. Make one in the bottom corner the options window (haha! window!) widget I mean, and BAM! You’re cooking now.

Really ugly. MeeGo is the future for Nokia.

I see a lot of people just enjoy bashing Symbian especially you arrogant Americans. If Android is so great, then why the need for skins like HTC Sense, Motoblur, twiz etc ? The stock Android UI is all over the place and so disjointed. The iOS interface was designed for toddlers and in my view full of bells and whistles but fumctionally constrained. At the end of the day, there is more to an OS than UI and symbian has more going for it under the hood. Advanced support for HDMI, Writeable data paging, superior graphics architecture etc and it does not need the obscene amount of resources as android.

So get off Symbians back you arrogant iLosers and go buy a bumper !!

    • braine

IMHO, giving manufacturers the option of putting their own skin on Android devices is great. It allows them to create a more unique Android device whilst still having the same underlying OS. I guess this is good for developers as well, as they can develop apps for Android and have them run on a whole range of phones, instead of having developers develop for one platform or the other.

    • wallyson

“arrogant Americans”? lighten up Francis. at least let us in on what great country you live in.

too bad you had to drop that in there though. the rest of what you said was dead on.

    • needone

Symbian is a relic!!!ITalk about needing a major overhaul!!

  • Ben

It was a mistake to release this because it is not ready. No real judgments can be made at this point. The iphone 4 on the other hand, has been released, so lots of judgments possible there.

I guess it goes to show that people want things that look pretty instead of perform well. Apple did not even have proper multi-tasking nor copy and paste until recently but people were bashing “archaic” Symbian. It is all so superficial.

As has been mentioned, I hope that Symbian succeeds because it will drive progress via competition. Let’s not forget that Steve did not invent the world. He was innovative but built on what was there. If Symbian and Android and others are more successful, Steve will have to innovate more and that is a good thing for all of us.

  • asfd

they arent interested in android because they copied android…lol

    nice posting

i wish they would have kept the classic Symbian font (or slightly more modern interpretation of it)… this looks too generic… has no unique look like Symbian used to have, or like PalmOS or iOS… or even WinMo…

    • sam

It looks generic because it is generic. The implementations of the manufacturers will look different. The point in these pics is not to show how the icons or the menus or the fonts or the background look. The manufacturers will skin it the way they like.

The point here are the elements that are in each view. The look is generic.

  • Sir Trashcan

Wow, a good background image, but realistically asking – what else is there?

Ditch the background image and ask yourself this question.

There’s absolutely nothing cool or new here. In addition to that this is nothing but “promiseware” – some artist puts out some images to create hype when real products that you could actually buy are more than 6 months away.

  • ugh

Wow this looks like something created for a high-school graphics design class project, especially the horrid font (not to mention the large bold letters).

    Not impressive at all.

  • firefight16

Judging by a few of the pictures showing no service and no bars this phone must have the Iphones new attenna design:)

  • needone

WOW,Is this from 4 years ago?

  • needone

Symbian is about as relevent as windows mobile 6.5!!
