Bloomberg: Apple senior antenna engineer warned company about potential issues

Breaking

New iOS 4.1 Signal Bars

Is it Friday yet? Bloomberg is reporting that: “Apple Inc.’s senior antenna expert voiced concern to Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs in the early design phase of the iPhone 4 that the antenna design could lead to dropped calls.” The article cites an anonymous source, “familiar with the matter,” who went on to say:

Last year, Ruben Caballero, a senior engineer and antenna expert, informed Apple’s management the device’s design may cause reception problems. [...] A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device’s June 24 release.

Apple declined Bloomberg’s request to comment on the report. One of our AT&T sources has told us that while the iPhone 4 antenna issue is well known — and well covered — AT&T stores aren’t seeing iPhone 4 returns (like at all). Hopefully, we’ll have some concrete answers to all these antenna questions on Friday at around 1:00 PM EDT.

Correcto, not many of them have been returned. Someone will be yelling at me about how much it sucks, and 5 people are waiting in line to preorder one. And then the yelling person walks out the door with the same iPhone 4.

They haven’t been returned to AT&T because the AT&T reps are telling people to only return it to Apple. At least, that’s what the 5 AT&T reps at our launch store told us.

I hear Ford is coming out with a cool new car, but unless you buy a steering wheel cover you lose complete control. Don’t worry, Ford is selling them for $100 a pop.

I mean who doesn’t use a steering wheel cover.

Is that the smell of a smoking gun?

AT&T Stores? Since when has that been a measurement of whether an iPhone is being returned or not? They have a year warranty. If someone’s having the issue they’d go to an Apple store and have the device replaced. Try asking Apple Stores how many iPhone 4′s they’re replacing a day.

Personally, I couldn’t give a rat’s ass what whoever is gonna say on Friday. I ain’t buying an iPhone 4 no matter what.

I just replaced my trusted 3G for a trusted 3Gs, so I’m awating til June 2011 for the iPhone 5, and hope Apple learned their lesson by then, and come up with a different, more efficient design.

Do you really believe Apple or ATT will be truthful in their return rate counts? They are not legally obligated to divulge anything at all. Of course they will say the return rate is nil, nada, nothing. It is in their best interest to make this a subjective issue that has been blown out of proportion. “Yes, let me be share with you how bad this situation really is”.

But I won’t argue with the simple fact that for one return another five people are lining up for iPhone4. In this day and age it will take more than crappy hardware and design to keep uneducated consumers away. And Apple has the benefit of ATT’s bad network on their side.

Of course people aren’t returning their devices! The iSheep will never return anything made by the Prophet Jobs. The iPhone 5 won’t be able to make phone calls period and his followers would come by the millions. Motorola StarTac FTW!

Apple Stores in the Northeast are hiring Police Officers for Friday June 18th to be at the Apple Store. Much like they hired for the first few days the Iphone 4 was released. Speculation being that they will be offering free bumpers for the Iphone 4…..

Return this shit and save yourself all this trouble. We “consumers” should be in control. Period!!!

It’s never good when customers start complaining about reception issues, it gets worst when your own engineer tells you of a possible problem before the phones release. Man, fanboys are in denial. But if this engineer report turns out to be true, then Apple deserves all the negative attention they’re getting.

I over see 20 AT&T dealer locations and have sold over 500 iphone 4′s. Not a single one has been returned. It is a great product and customers are still lining up to purchase.

      GM,

I don’t doubt you, however, there are many people out there who have a problem with their IPhone and Steve Jobs has offered – bumper deals- at great cost to the Company. Obviously, there is a problem with the phone.

It would be interesting to learn from you, how many of your 500 customers take up Apple’s ‘Bumper deal’.

Perhaps you will be kind enough to keep us posted.

But do we know what design they had back then?
Im surely not a Apple fan, dont see my self buying iphone ever, the keynote back in january 2007 sounded nice, but since then Ive seen that its not real smartphone, just a semismartphone. Im not interested, and alternatives offers me better value for money, and more of the features I want. I think apple is handeling the whole thing wrong. And I dont get why so many people buy the iPhone. I get why its a success, but such a success, I dont get. Breaks easily, some spontaious cracks. bad reception. makes your voice sound different. Music playback is great on the iPhone 3Gs and iphone 4.There are better cameras on other phones. I dont care much for multitouch on a phone, I want onehand use. And so on. So dont think Im defending apple in the matter of this statement because Im a fanboy, Im certainly not.

    But lets get back.
I’ve been thinkning about the antenna design, perhaps in the beginning, they thought “if we make it external, we can still put a metallic backside on the phone, while keeping reception”.
But then someone realized that if the back would be metall, then they would have serious problems with the reception.
And perhaps, this statement is actually about such a design, if either statement or such a design ever existed.

From the political coverage of Schumer’s pressure on Apple, to the insider coverage of Apple engineers warning in advance about the iPhone antenna, to still more stories, your coverage of iPhone4 in advance of the Friday press conference has been fresh, multi-faceted and rich, and is distinguished by its comprehensive level of information and its competitive excellence as well.

Thanks, and Well Done all around to your staff.

    Well done.

one day there was a little boy and he was the coolest kid in town. he thought he’d show everyone how to do cool things. then the new kid showed up. he was pretty cool but people were nervous to embrace the new kid. then the new kid was able to do stuff that the old kid couldn’t do. the old kid kept trying to change the way he looked to remain popular but then one day when he just changed his hairstyle and was showing off some tricks, he forgot to learn how to walk! he tried, but after a few steps he kept falling down. the boys papa was in denial until one day he realized that the old cool kid was finished. and it was on friday, july 16, 2010 when papa told the old cool kid to come home…
