HTC EVO 4G delays hurting Sprint's 4G strategy

While speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse was quoted as saying, “we thought we would have more of a head start than we’ll end up having.” The CEO was referring to his company’s first-to-market 4G strategy, and more specifically about their industry first 3G/4G hybrid phone; the HTC EVO 4G. Currently, the device is listed as “delayed,” and does not have a potential shipping date on Sprint’s website. Sprint has yet to release official sales figures for the handset, but analyst firm Macquarie Group is estimating that around 300,000 EVOs have been sold and that demand is still high. HTC, the manufacturer of the device, is citing part shortages from third-party vendors as the root cause of the delays. HTC has said that they have signed several different contracts with other vendors (including Sony) to provide LCD screens and other parts for future handsets in an attempt to prevent delays. Anyone out there trying to get an HTC EVO without success?

Referring strictly to the article I have been on a Sprint “waiting list” since launch day and cannot find one yet. In fact, they stopped using waiting lists because of the embarrassing shortage on phones. I really don’t know how much to blame Sprint for this, but I’m annoyed enough to think about another carrier. Last I checked, I still had 20 people ahead of me on the list and they only get maybe 5 phones a day in.
I know Sprint doesn’t want to inventory too much product, but they really need to get enough product for a proper launch. This really is hurting them.

I ordered mine from the Sprint website and got it 2 days later. The phone is awesome! I turned in my iPhone 4G for the EVO and glad I made the switch. I have found and app for everything I had on my iPhone! :-)

How could this be when the EVO came out well before the iphone 4?

    • VZWSupe

In truth, you can only fault Sprint but so much. Verizon Wireless has the same problem with the Incredible. The real culprit here is Samsung, who manufactures the AMOLED display screens for both the EVO and the Incredible.

Samsung just released its own line of android phones, the Galaxy S series, that uses the same display screens, and while they were producing those, other manufacturers suddenly came upon a display screen shortage.

Nothing Sprint can do about it except wait it out, or offer you another option. But if you were looking for the EVO, Sprint really does not have another option.

        @vzwsupe,

hey whats up? just to inform you its an LCD screen provided by sony.

      • JKV

The Evo doesn’t have an AMOLED.. It’s an LCD.

I work at a retail store that sells cell phones and we are always getting Evos in stock.

      • Android Guy

        not true!

And if you want an evo but can’t find one, go to best buy… where they not only have them; but where you dont even pay a.mail In rebate

    • Android Guy

wrong, i was there yesterday and they wont have em for a long while…stop lying!

I got mine at a Sorint licensee store — had to out down a deposit and wait a week, but that wasn’t so bad. However, if Sprint wants me to use the thing more than my iPhone, it would help if I could actually get 4G in my neighborhood. I also had to wait TWO weeks before Verizon (my least favorite carrier) would cough up my landline number. That’s obscene, especially since the landline has been out of order fo a month, and they never fixed it! Meantime I’m using a temp number, not getting 4G, and wondering why I simply didn’t get another iPhone.

  • Patrick

Been waiting to use my upgrade on this dang phone and cant find it anywhere including bestbuy!!

  • 3 Phones Jugglin

Well…..Hesse best make sure theres no shortages of EPIC’S.

    • CF

There will be, you can bet on it.

    • Nitpicky

I work for a Sprint indirect dealer, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that there will be. We are 1 month into the Evo launch, and indirect dealers still have yet to be able to sell them at all. Sprint simply does not know how to launch a phone.

  • slammer

I was lucky to get my Evo after having to wait for 2 weeks. I absolutely love the phone.

Battery life may be an issue, but when you’re dealing with the size of RAM and processor of Today’s smartphones such as the Evo, it should be expected. See how much battery life you get on a laptop. It’s all in perspective. Until batteries improve, more and more smartphones in this category, will experience the same issue.

    • Sharquawnda@SprintPOS

Batteries? No, lets start with the HTC Evo’s 65nm processor

  • Swagger

Jawman did more of a review on the EVO than BGR did.

    Still waiting on EVO review…..

  • charlesfro

i’m afraid i’m not helping with the shortage. i got the evo the day they were released, loved it, smashed in a car door on july 4th (still works, but there’s a corner where touch still registers but there’s no image), ordered a replacement, the replacement was left on my stoop w/out a signature, was supposedly stolen, and now i’ll have wait till ANOTHER replacement is available (quoted 5 days). at least my present, albeit damaged, EVO is still working.

    Sorry.

  • burnet

I hope its not the same story with the EPic.

  • Marsh511

And why are Sprint and Verizon taking so long on a release date for their versions of the Samsung Galaxy S? Both AT&T (Captivate) and T-Mo (Vibran) have firm release dates, but not Sprint (Epic 4G) or VZW (Fascinate)! This is annoying, as we’re trying to switch over from VZW to Sprint. Are they just trying to prevent these from taking interest away from the Evo and DroidX???

  • Sam

Some of you may want to look into Wirefly.

I got in on the Evo/Bing deal over July 4 weekend and my 3 phones (2 EVOs + 1 Hero). The Hero came last week and the EVOs are coming tomorrow.

Currently Bing has $25 cashback. Search for Wirefly.

I’ve been unsuccessful in getting an Evo! Yesterday when the white ones were on sale I went online to get one shipped to store but when i went to go pick it up they didn’t let me walk out with one! I told them the phone comes out today but they said they had to get all the pre-orders out before i could even get one! I was so mad because I was charged and got my store pick up confirmation email but they said they had to cancel the order and wait until they got all the pre-orders out! I was livid but i went to the sprint store and had no choice but to get put on their waiting list! Hopefully I get mine soon!

  • jawman

Guys I can’t say a whole lot about this but I’m telling you, go to one of third party Sprint stores that are independently owned and operated. A lot of them can’t compete with the corporate stores and will give you a monthly discount if you buy it there. Yeah you still have to do the mail in rebate, but you’ll save so much more money a month that it’s worth it to do that rather than go to Best Buy or Wirefly.

    • bbnetter

You can still get whatever corporate or student monthly discount you are eligible for if you buy through Wirefly. You just call Sprint to add it to your account as soon as the phone is activated.

  • sean76

Got it Launch Day….One of the best devices i’ve ever owned..

  • Dee

Same here, got mine launch day and have had no problems what so ever…….Left at&t and crapple for sprint and the evo and have not looked back

  • endless

after about 2 weeks of deal hunting on craigs list.

bingo, i am in EVO heaven.

  • GotMine

I live in Atlanta where you can’t get these things anywhere. When you visit the store and ask about a waiting list, they tell you they’ve closed them. The Evo has gone to a first come, first served item. So how do you get one of these babies? You go to a non 4G market. They have plenty in stock. I was able to pick up two Evo’s yesterday. I had to drive about an hour out of town, but I got em. That being said, I like it but I don’t love it. I live in the city of Atlanta limits and I can’t get 4G service at my house…lame! I’m also a long time Blackberry user and coming from a business related product to a more media related product I was very disappointed. My fiancee loves hers. She is replacing a Pre. I will be returning mine though. It’s a lot of fun but I dont need another expensive toy. I need a work phone.

  • Jack

Got mine on launch day. Best phone I’ve ever owned, and that list includes Palms (Pre, Treos, and Centro) and 2 different BlackBerry’s. It’s fast, stable, feature rich, and does the personal and business things I need it to do. Well worth keeping up attempts at buying if you haven’t been able to find one.

  • D-man

Some stores have them, but you wouldn’t know unless you were physically there. I’ve asked a few stores via phone whether they had them and was told no. When I stopped by less than an hour later, they still had them in stock.

As far as shortages hurting, yes it hurts Sprint. I know they must have been concerned about getting too many phones given the overabundance of Pres they had, but Sprint didn’t bet enough on the Evo. They should have ordered enough to get them well into the pre-holiday buying season instead of thinking just get enough for summer.

Parts supplies are going to slow all the carriers down because parts makers have been afraid to build enough new production facilities and capacities because economies are down. The demand for smartphones remains high though. I don’t think smartphone makers are seeing the links though – smartphone demand remains high while mobile PCs and netbooks continues to fall. Buyers are telling them that smartphones are in the sweetspot.

It also hurts that Samsung, LG, and a few other much smaller suppliers pretty much control the screen production.

  • stunned

Ordered from Wirefly and shipped in 1 week, unlike the 3 weeks I was expecting. Very pleased.

  • Warloc Alcott

Inside sources say that Samsung manufactures the EVO’s screen. Since Samsung is releasing their own 4G phone (the Epic) for Sprint at the end of the month, they have halted production of the EVO screen in order to boost sales.
