Google releases App Inventor for Android

General

App Inventor

Google has unleashed a new tool for Android application creation cleverly named “App Inventor.” The new, web-based tool uses an MIT-created Open Block programming interface to provide easy visual queues to buttons, actions, and more. The new tool is designed to open Android programming to more people and be “simple to use, but also very powerful.” We’ve got Google’s video demo (albeit a short one) ready for you after the bounce.

Yay! Now we can have even more slide puzzles and bejeweled rip offs in the market!!!

    /sarcasm

Wow, seems easy enough. They are really making it easy for the rest of us.

    • MikeD

Yeah its going to be interesting to see how the hardcore devs react to this.

      • crzysheeit

I am not a hardcore dev, but it would be a great learning tool for those, like me, who want to learn JAVA and want to try and get to that “hardcore” level developing apps for Android or just developing. Period.

Can’t wait to get my “invite” for this.

      • crzysheeit

Forgot to add, hope that users of this tool can see the code behind the WYSIWYG interface.

  • Kay

Awesome! While I have to agree with Glock, it will at least make it easier for average joes to create their own apps.

Cool, wish there was something similar for the iPhone.

    engadget dupe

  • StevenGlansburg

This is pretty freaking cool. Definitely even more excited for my impending droid X on Thursday because of this.

  • warhed

The creative juices are flowing… oh wait that’s just my drool!

  • MikeD

This looks promising. Show me more.

  • ABOURDE

Apple does have similar, check out gamesalad.com

    • BeLogical

      MAC only, boo!

  • BoogieNYC

Palm released an SDK awhile ago (maybe while they were still known as “Pilot”) that allowed everyday users to make their own apps too…it wasn’t a bad thing but only because there wasn’t the risk of a benign, crappy little tic-tac-toe download destroying one’s device. This might have some serious long-reaching impact if people download some little disposable program that features some hidden malware. I don’t think the real Android developers have anything to worry about per se — not until this do-it-yourself thing gets more mature — but with a slew of suddenly free and easily-available applications hitting the market, users better be prepared for a lot more bad stuff being hidden among the good and the mediocre.

Now doubt it is a great tools for all those who are novice to android OS like me, but we want other more simple solutions like Nokia’s web based Ovi App wizard.

  • Andy Richardson

I can make my own fart app? Seriously, I need to know more about this sucker. I am not much of a programmer, but I have high hopes for hacking this into something useful.

  • Jazzyl

Nice and easy thanks to google now everyone can create an app.

    • modis mo

that is not a good thing

  • BeLogical

    Looking forward to this.

if people would just review/rate the Alps in the Android Market that would be great. Maybe just an option to search each category by highest rated. And read the reviews many an apparently has not been installed due to poor user reviews.

  • CF

Isn’t this the point of an “open” OS? Anybody can play in the arena which in part lends to the popularity of Android.

  • roebling

The Google site on which android apps are to be built isn’t up. There’s a sign-up sheet that asks what school you’re associated with, but completing that only gets a promise that they’ll get back to you.

This thing’s really beta, invite-only, and/or it’s being pushed to schools.

  • JFA

I hope the app marketplace doesn’t get flooded with mediocre apps as a result of this.

    • umaluver

apparently you’ve never been to the Market. Its already flooded with mediocre apps. The App store and the Market are flooded with mediocre apps.

They just need to make the stores easier to navigate and filter out the crap…

      • destardi

        Try Appbrain; problem solved.

      • crzysheeit

With the next iteration of the Market, here’s hoping we can sort by rating, # of downloads, etc.

Can’t stand all those random “boobies” apps that are all made and repackaged by the same annoying horny developer.

This is what is great about Google they offer different services to compete with Apple. Plus the whole point of creating your own apps made easy is just really cool and a great touch by Google. I think if this catches on this could be a big selling point for Google.

  • mezmryz03

Will this count towards increasing the developer base? I’m not sure it should unless the apps become available in the market, but it’s a little gray.

    • VeinyBoto

How are you going to use this on phones for AT&T who locks down sideloading apps from anywhere but the android market?
I guess AT&T can find another way to charge people for something like; $10 android developer fee – then they will allow sideloading apps.

  • patrick

Just reading PC World and their article about this. What a POS Magazine they are, saying Android is “Lagging” etc. I think I will devlop an app that ruins there cred. if they have any beyond apple.

  • noReally

Well that’s one way to say you have as many apps as apple, let everyone create fart apps and apps that do nothing at all. Sweet.

    • Choo Choo Charlie

If that happens, then not just as many apps as apple, but the exact same quality as apple’s apps.

  • Lissona

I see this app being largely unneeded if the code is not viewable to the dev. If the code is viewable it could serve as a quick and easy way to set up the UI and add sounds. Most of the back end programming for higher quality apps is likely not going to be executable (networking) with the WYSIWYG design tool. Alas if you want to make apps that play the sound of your cat purring or a push button fart machine as another user suggested then this may be your thing.

  • http://www.thepatriotring.net gary mazza

wonderful idea, but a nightmare for security. we live in a time when technolgy is being used against every day. lets not throw caution to the wind into the hands of the enemy!

    • MikeD

I have to agree with you. I’ll also throw in Quality control issues as well. This could usher in the day where anybody and their mother will make apps and as we all know how do you find the good ones as opposed to pure garbage.

This is a good thing but just as much could be a bad thing. Only time will tell.
