T-Mobile slashes $70 off the price of the Garminfone, now available for $129

General

garminfone-tmobile-129

T-Mobile has cut the price of the Garminfone by $70, lowering the handset to $129.99 with a two year agreement. This price cut comes hot on the heels of a series of contradictory rumors regarding the demand for the GPS-centric device. Earlier this week, analyst Yair Reiner calculated that T-Mobile has sold a paltry 20,000 Garminfones since the phone launched in June. Asustek refuted that number with a claim that the handset was shipping as expected and consumer demand was positive. Until actual sales figures are released, we will be left to speculate whether this price drop is part of a natural cycle of retail markdowns or the early signs of an impending fire sale.

Thanks to all who sent this in!

No human being I know within the connected American Colonies would ever spend 129$ on this device. And Im dead serious.

    • Saif

Oh, and will someone explain to me what this phone will do that the Google Maps download won’t do for any phone?

      • EggoEspada

Its a lot more accurate and offers more. I rather have Google Maps and Navigation on my Droid then to be stuck with this phone with Garmin. I think they should just offer up a Android app instead of trying to make a phone…

      • Mr. Potato Head

well, T-mobile doesn’t have data service outside of the 30 or so largest cities in the U.S. so Google maps is worthless when you are on GPRS or have no signal at all. This has a dedicated GPS that can bypass T-mobile’s tiny data network. So yeah, this phone is a good deal for people on T-mobile that want GPS.

      • Sharquawnda@SprintPOS

Such a failure. If you’re going to troll under these names you should find out how to be more effective because it’s just sad.

      • Grant

you get what you pay for. if you want better coverage you got to pay for it. You may not get service a lot of places with tmob, but you do save money. I’d rather save an extra 10-20 a month over having extra coverage when I rarely use it.

      • NuShrike

It’s weird people would mark down a comment bumping having a dedicated GPS app that doesn’t depend on a data connection. Can you go hiking with Google Maps or when your data connection drops?

No! And I’ve tried it on AT&T and T-Mobile. Only problem is this works better as Garmin Mobile XT instead of a dedicated Garmin/Nuviphone.

  • 3 Phones Jugglin

And i still dont want it…

  • Diordna

Just imagine what it will be like after the Vibrant and Charm hit the shelves. In 60 days you will be able to get this thing for free. I’ll take a top shelf smart phone and a separate Garmin GPS unit any day over trying to live with this thing.

  • Bada$$

Thesr dumb asses are like Palm… A little too late you morons… You wont win shit for business.. Even ask RoRo Doucher.. He will tell ya.. RIM, Apple, android rule the market.. Even T-Mob is destined for falure… Right RoRo Doucher?

  • Jorge

Not sure if this has been on bgr, but WSJ is predicting tmobile to go out of busness soon, here is the link http://247wallst.com/2010/06/15/247-wall-st-ten-brands-that-will-disappear-in-2011/

    • skyy_flyer

Isn’t WSJ one of the same newspapers that says 2 or 3 times a year that “according to trusted sources close to both companies, Verizon is getting the iPhone”, usually around WWDC or the beginning of the year? Yup, I’d trust them.

    • The Robot Devil

Do you trolls working for AT&T and Verizon think that you are helping your career by bashing TMO? Here’s some news for you… you’re not!

    • mingkee

DT should file a lawsuit against WSJ for that.

  • Diordna

TMobile isn’t going anywhere. Just because they don’t have the coverage of Big Red or Sprint doesn’t make them a bad company and the WSJ ain’t the Bible. Over the years I have had service work each off the big 4 and I can tell you first hand that TMobile has the best customer service over the phone and in their stores. People that are foolish enough to not do the research up front with regards to coverage shouldn’t turn around and bash the company when it’s not what they expected. I’ll take TMobile and their 5+MB download speed, hot spot on my N1 and true unlimited data and be very happy.

    • dkorda

Diorrhea- Dude time to face the facts.. It doesn’t matter how good T-Mobile’s customer service is, doesn’t matter how good their plans are, doesn’t matter who is in your FAV 5. T-Mobile does not have the infrastructure to compete with AT&T, Vzn, and Sprint. Having just a 3G network is no longer going to cut it. Look at the trends, we are demanding more and more data, less voice.. So do you think having EDGE and 3G will cut it?

Doubt it pal. T-Mobile will be done if they do not innovate in 12 months.

Plus they have JACK SWAT for subscribers.. they’re so far behind.

      • NuShrike

I’m hearing T-Mobile is running fiber to their towers. What’s AT&T running, still copper! Who’s getting to 21+Mbps first?

I’ve spent my entire cellphone existence on Pacbell -> SBC -> Cingular -> AT&T and I can tell you all the great infrastructure that was built up to Cingular ended up in T-Mobile towers. That’s why they can jump to HSPA+ so easily.

    • Jorge

customer service doesn’t give you coverage when you don’t have it

    • Sharquawnda@SprintPOS

T-Mobile has more coverage than Sprint. AT&T and Verizon are the bigger carriers for coverage. The trolling here is getting ridiculous.

      • Grant

It is insane…Sprint’s coverage is relatively the same as T-mobile’s…they just have roaming on Verizon’s slow stuff, which is a lot of slow area.

    • The Robot Devil

I worked for TMO for over a decade. I heard this crap every year. The company is run by idiots who got rid of everyone who knew what they were doing. But the fact is that they have good products, a decent network and the lowest rate plans in the industry.

  • Bada$$

Keep drinking the T-Mob coolaid… Theyre destines to fail dude.. NO high speed 3G… No HSPA, NO 4G.. They did not look into the future.. Kiss T-Mob and your gay ass unlimited plans away fool!

    • The Robot Devil

It’s spelled “destiny”. Learn how to spell and while you’re at it learn something about T-Mobile.

    • mingkee

Hey, did you take mental drug today?

  • MikeD

    Already?

    • MikeD

Sorry guys. I dunno why the thread glitched and reposted it multiple times. Sorry again.

I am surprised they dropped the price on the Garmin so soon. Maybe should go the app route that Tom-Tom did?

    • sirpaul

Yes, I do realize Sunday’s are slow. But why not post a case review, or some hardware comparisons instead of these sort of ‘news’?

  • Spazmogen

lets face it: this “fone” is for those who travel internationally and do not want to be bent over for data roaming plan fees. The maps are stored on the “fone” or MicroSD.

I’m Canadian and travel into the USA frequently, but I am not willing to pay my cell provider another $30/month to get USA Data so I can use Garmin Mobile for Blackberry on my Bold. I already pay $30/month for 6gb of Canadian data. Streaming map data is a thing of the past.

I would buy this “fone’ and use it on a $10/month pay as you go set up. Data not required as it has WiFi.

But neither T-Mobile or Amazon.com sells it to Canadians and no Canuk provider offers it.

    • dkorda

Spazmaster– Have you seen the free Google Navigator? It’s light years better than any paid app.. sure it’s streaming, but it’s so superior to any app out there. Sure since it’s Garmin it will come pre-loaded with 5GB of map data, but who cares.. If we wanted a device for navigation, we will buy a TomTom or Garmin.

A phone marketed as a GPS device is flawed. I guarantee you this ‘fone’ as you call it ONLY will have USA maps on it out of the box. And you will pay $50 for Europe, $50 for Canada, $50 for Australia, on an on… it how they sell maps online now.

Garmin should stick to what they’re good at, making portable GPS devices, NOT CELL PHONES!

      • NuShrike

Okay, two arguments here. Garminphone is stupid, but Google Maps is even more stupid. Try driving all over SoCal, nobody has coverage everywhere including AT&T or T-Mobile.

Betting your nav on data-based Google Maps is even more stupid. And you can’t even take it traveling. You must be some hermit.

OTOH, Garmin Mobile XT is excellent traveling even the high-seas in a cruise ship, hiking through towerless terrain, and the screwed up hills all over SoCal.

  • Diordna

For you guys that don’t read, HSPA+ is faster than Sprints 4G and that’s fact. I have an Evo and it gets 4G download speeds of 3.5MB and that’s with a strong signal. I’m getting over 5MB with TMobile and they just turned on hspa here. In Philli, where HSPA+ was first rolled out TMobile is getting downloads in the mid teens. Guess those must just be some awesome EDGE speeds. So for you AT&T and Verizon lovers what would my 6.5GB of data cost me on your plan. Oh, I know, that really doesn’t matter because they have a lot of subscribers and coverage in places that do not matter to me. I could even have slower data speeds too. Wow……that would really be smart. Damn I love this coolaid.

    • dkorda

Go for it, keep drinking it then dipsh!t. Hope you like your new carried by the end of the year. Yup sure, go for it big guy.. T-Mob is a has been, just like RIM.

  • cellphoneguy

garmin phone didn’t sell on att isn’t sellin on Tmobile won’t sell on CDMA carriers either. both devices are quirky and not well received end of story.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • Diordna

Dkorda – you are obviously just an uneducated redneck that really knows nothing other than how to make yourself look stupid and you have mastered that. Go back and read your stupid, hostile and childish rants and see how rediculous you sound. Do your parents know that you are still up?

  • Bada$$

I agree, defend TMO all you want fellas, but theyre really in a bad position right now. This Gatmin phone will be another flop. Just wait, another nail in the coffin of TMO!

    • The Robot Devil

Is making comments about topics you know nothing about part of your job at AT&T or Verizon or are you just trying to make brownie points with management to get a raise?

  • dkorda

Okay Diarrhea- How many other cell phone companies on the WSJ report did you see? I only saw ONE, you lovely T-Mobile. So what does that have to say? Sounds to me like you better take your T-Mobile pink shirt to the Goodwill and start looking for another JOB! Or you might like it better working for Sprint. At any rate enjoy your GPS Gay ass Garmin phone.

  • UberSapian

I wonder if Garmin will charge you for map upgrades every year like their stand alone units?

  • Diordna

NuShrike – don’t start talking about HSPA+, speed or state any facts in your comments because any good news about T-Mobile can’t be true, just ask Retarda, I mean Dkorda. No worries though, I am sure he and his Backflip have moved on to bigger and better things. Retarda, in case you are still out there go back up to thr 4th post and read all of the positive things I said about the Garmin phone. Darn….just ran a speed test on my N1 and got 5.45 down and my Evo on 4G was 3.46. What do you get out of your Backflip?

  • http://alghienkad06.student.ipb.ac.id/ thea

    i agree

  • xman

Apparently there are a number of uninformed blogger’s on this post, who have very little knowledge or facts about what they are posting.

    1) 24/7 Wall Street is NOT the Wall Street Journal.
    2) T-mobile isn’t going anywhere!! Deutsche Telecom owns them, and they have deeper pockets than AT&T or Verizon.
So for those who don’t know, go and do some research before posting on topics you know very little about.

  • mingkee

Give me Froyo on Garminfone and the deal is done.

  • Spazmogen

I have yet to read a negative professional review about the hardware. People seem to hate the price, yet like the features. From CNET to The Wall Street Journal it was the same: nice, but too expensive.

And it has no reception issues unlike iPhone 4 (watch for an apple recall). Consumer Reports magazine worked with the iPhone 4 and concluded Apple is outright lying to customers. Nice one Apple. Jerks.

Garmin allows 1 free map update upto 60 days from purchase. After that buy one or go to the torrent sites…

The phone ships with North America 2011 map, not just USA. The uninformed writer (Dkorda) a few posts back speaks with great conviction about something he knows very little about. And its glaring obvious…the internet is full of fools.

OTA Maping is fine for domestic use. If you plan on travel then you want as few devices as possible with you. Which is why I have both Garmin Nuvi and Garmin for Blackberry. I won’t pay a premium to use Blackberry data abroad.

As for Google maps, I don’t use them: see point above about Garmin Blackberry. Nothing touches it. Not even Google.
