Motorola CHARM-2

Wednesday, T-Mobile and Motorola officially announced an Android 2.1 handset named the CHARM. While the press release was nice, it did lack a certain level of detail that we prefer. Yesterday, Moto put up the official specs page for the CHARM, so with further ado, here is the extended spec sheet:

  • WCDMA 1700/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSDPA 3.6 Mbps (Category 5/6), EDGE Class 12, GPRS Class 12
  • Android 2.1 with Motoblur and Flash Lite browsing
  • 3 Megapixel fixed focus camera with digital zoom
  • Video playback and capture at 24 fps (supported playback codecs: AAC, H.264, MP3, MPEG-4, WMA9, ACC+ Enhanced, WMV v9, AMR NB, AAC+)
  • 1170 mAh battery (WDCMA standby 334 hours, GSM standby 267 hours)
  • Support for Exchange, Gmail, IMAP, and POP3 email
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + ERD (A2DP, AVRCP, BPP, HID, HSP, OPP, PAN)
  • Wi-Fi (b/g/n)
  • GPS
  • 2GB micro-SD card included (support for up to a 32 GB card)
  • 2.8″ TFT touchscreen display with Gorilla Glass (says it includes “pinch-to-zoom” but does not specify multitouch)
  • Accelerometer, proximity and ambient light sensors
  • Size: 67.2 x 98.4 x 11.4 mm
  • Weight: 110 grams

There you have it. Is the CHARM, uh, charming anyone?

A decent entry-level Android phone. Nothing more.

    processor speed?

    • d3fpo3t

it has a 600mhz omap the same one that is in the pre

I think the Charm seems at least somewhat interesting cus I had a Palm Pixi for a while and I love portrait qwertys with a touch screen on top. But Android isn’t webOS so right off the back you can tell it won’t flow as smooth. But still is an interesting phone.

Awesome comment. And I doubt its housing the same processor as the pre considering the Pre was released a full year ago if i’m not mistaken. I don’t think Moto would be so stupid. They probably used the same class but upgraded version.

The CHARM would wiz around but that MotoBlur is gonna be holding it back like a ball and chain. My girlfriend has the Cliq and =___________= next topic.

NinjaBlur is what we’re eagerly waiting for Moto =]

This looks like something that Cricket would carry. smh

anyone else think it’s ugly as sin?

I see this going the same way as the KIN. feature for feature, you can’t compete with Nokia in this price range.

    • JT

Unless that feature is…well…usability. Or apps. Or browsing (Symbian browser was always good at rendering pages, but Nokia always cheaps out on RAM, often causing the browser to crash mid-pageload). Or extensibility (do you still have to cut/paste info to/from Google Maps? I haven’t powered up my E71 in a long while).

I currently have a Blackberry Bold. I love portrait qwerty’s. I’m not a tween/teen, I’m a 30 year old guy that likes the android idea and needs/wants a qwerty in portrait.

I had a G1, it was ok, went back to blackberry due to the terrible keyboard on the G1.

I had and just sold the Nexus One on eBay. I NEED a portrait qwerty. I know I’m not the only one! I don’t need a 4 inch screen to have a “cool” phone!

Some of us dont care if its bleeding edge, we want something functional that suits us.

So…can we please stop with the bashing. If its not for you, so be it!
And pardon my formatting as I’m typing this on my blackberry!

    • d3fpo3t

should of used a different qwerty :)

      • Clintus71

        d3fpo3t,

Perhaps if you HAD spent some more time in your high school English classes, you might have been able to avoid using “of” instead of “have” in your posting.

Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, but bad grammar has always just been a thorn in my side.

  • The Prophet Mohammad

    Looks ugly. Typical TeenMobile…

@Clintus71,maybe you should be a professor then instead of trolling blogs correcting people who do not give a care. it’s a blog dude.

I have been tossing around the idea of AT&T’s new data plans, which I think Verizon will adopt, and this device fits into my contemplation.

I was thinking of getting a Blackberry type device for email only which will use less than 250MB a month ($15) and then get a iPad type Tablet and use 2GB or less a month ($25). So $40 total for two independently and always-Internet-connected devices.

In that plan, this device works. Typing on that BB type keyboard is way easier for me then an on-screen one or a horizontal slider. I will likely never consider a BB again after the BB Storm debacle, so this would be the leading contender in this scenario.

  • webby

    No dedicated number keys?

    • Omar

Not even the bb have dedicated number keys. Its hard on this form factor.

  • JFA

Android and me reports that this phone is packing an OMAP3410 Processor. I believe that falls into the family of Cortex-A8 processors. If this is true, this phone is gonna be a smooth use and quite speedy to be low-end.

The moto Q lives on in spirit…..god help us all!

  • needone

All hail the succesor to the mighty Q series of phones!!This is the first Android handset in this form factor.I personally hope more manufactures do this with Android.Blackberry would have some serious competition in this form factor.

  • B

I was able to get some hands on time with this little guy at a recent expo held for Tmobile employees and I have to say that I was impressed. The size is perfect. Not too big or too small. The trackpad on the back of the device was extremely intuitive and comfortable. It’s extremely smooth and it’s aim is to be an entry level Android phone.

  • PB

Give it a flash and autofocus and it becomes viable.

Give it a feature phone data plan and it might be worth a look. Otherwise it doesn’t fly.
