China renews Google's Internet Content Provider license

A little over a week ago, Google announced that it would stop redirecting Chinese web queries to its uncensored Hong Kong site (a practice that began in March of this year). The change came as Google was about to submit its application for a Internet Content Provider license renewal (necessary to operate a website) to the Chinese government; a renewal Beijing indicated was unlikely if the redirect was still in place. Today, Reuters is reporting that China has in fact renewed the search giant’s ICP licnese, and in an official statement Google wrote, “We are very pleased [...] and we look forward to continuing to provide web search and local products to our users in China.” Mark this chapter in the Google v.       they arent completely giving in. we dont know yet what the request from the chinese government is. but you have to respect the rules of the country in which you operate, at least they took a chance a couple of months before and said we dont want to censor anymore. and you can still just click the hong kong link on their .cn page and get uncensored results.

      They can’t do anything else..Either in with limited choice or out entirely. In the end everyone wants a piece of humongous China.

      No they do not, and that is why Google had to bend. Baidu is better for search in Chinese and therefore was catching up real fast. Google realized Baidu will completely take over if they walk out of China. Worse, Baidu would not stop in China if Google takes a walk.
