Carrypad: Meego "demolishes" Android 2.2 in JavaScript test

SunScript - Netbook_ Morestown Phone

Employing a play-on-words from Wednesday’s Ars Technica article – titled “Android 2.2 demolishes iOS4 in JavaScript benchmarks” — blog Carrypad has put MeeGo through the same Sunpsider JavaScript tests both iOS 4 and Android 2.2 were subjected to. The results? iOS 4 – 10.9 seconds, Android 2.2 – 5.8 second, MeeGo – 4.2 seconds. Now, to be fair, the Aava phone being used to conduct these tests packs a 1.5 GHz Intel Moorestown processor (the Sunspider JS tests really lean heavily on a mobile processor) and is not, repeat not, a production phone. Also of note, the phone was tested using Firefox Mobile and not a MeeGo manufactured browser. Regardless, the speed tests are impressive…now all we need is a production MeeGo handset!

iPhone 4 does NOT have a 1GHz CPU, the ipad does.

completely 100% correct. dislike all you want.

a CPU with 50% higher clock speed is able to drop the test time by less than 50%.

    this is news how?

    • MicroNix

Yeah, so it takes a huge cpu in a MeeGo device to come up with a meager difference in times? A 1.6 second difference is not exactly “demolish” worthy. What was so spectacular about the Android to iOS 4 times is (as this test also concluded), the Android devices which are on par with hardware with Apple, kicked the crap out of iOS. This was nothing like that!

So let’s re-run the test when the 2Ghz Android units come out which will probably be before these devices are actually produced. LOL! This isn’t news!!

From what I can gather, the iPhone 4 has the same A4 chip as the iPad, which uses the same CPU core as the Samsung Galaxy S. The iPad is clocked @ 1GHz. According to various sources, the iPhone 4 uses a variable-clocking formula with a theoretical max of 1GHz. This chip is great for Apple packages which depend on “magic” to make it run better than anything in its path. Variable 1GHz chip vs. 1.5GHz pre-production Moorsetown: Do the math. Screw the magic.

Two different O/S, two different phones. Port the O/S to the same phone and then do your test. We know Android can be ported to iPhone, now port iO/S 4 to the Nexus One. Otherwise, your tests are bogus.
Compare the phone, iPhone has power consumption and storage over the Nexus hands down. I don’t know about you, but I don’t care how fast my phone runs, eight hours into the day my battery better not be drained.
You can have a car that goes 200 mph, but if the speed limit is 55 what does it matter.
And how about having 10 different companies run the tests and compare the results one to another. 10 to 1 says not one company will have matching numbers.
And what actually were the battery level before, during and after the tests.
Seriously, lets see all the facts.

No-one drives the speed limit…. bad example.

You can’t port the iOS to the other phones since the iOS is strictly meant to work with the components on the phones. If it were as easy as just porting the iOS over to other smartphones, it would have happened already.

You’re also making a case for a phone that has already lost in relevance to the article. The article simply states that Java is faster on MeeGo and Android 2.2 than on iOS4 and it has more to do with the operating system than the actual components since a nearly 50% reduction rate from iOS4 to Android2.2 is a little ridiculous.

No, your absolutely 100% WRONG about the performance. And in many cases this has been talked about and clarified. It is exactly like a car and a lot of other case senarios. When performance increases efficiency decreases. As time goes by power to efficiency ratios will increase resulting in more bang for the buck, but there is still a trade off. Flash is a prime example. It is processor intensive. It will and does work on the iPhone, but is not indorsed by Apple due to battery performance. In addition, heat build up, and virtually decreasing the life expectancy of the device. Load multiple browser windows with Flash playing on each, and see how long it takes before your computer’s fans start to hit high gear. It is a waste of energy. I am not bashing Flash in any way. Just using it as an example.
Go to the specs page for iPhone and the Nexus One. The two phones that were compared by Ars. The iPhone beats the Nexus on every account on battery life. I’m sure if Apple wanted to smoke Android, it wouldn’t be an issue.
The more that battery cycles the faster it dies.
If your on a desktop with an A/C power supply the article has merit, on a portable device, speed is nothing, its all in how much can be done, how long you can do it, and still have juice to make that call.

Oh, and btw, the OS is tuned to the processor, which drives the phone, so no again on not taking the phone into consideration, the two work hand in hand.

      • Celz

Your right in everything you are saying except one thing.. You act like the nexus one beating the iPhone 4 is completely meritless and non news worthy.. Its not a big deal and Im sure both phones could easily be tweaked to beat the nexus one mark.. And if the N1 would have lost it would have been reported just the same..

      • Mark

Celz, I think the Nexus is a very nice phone, in addition I think google’s Android operating system is pretty sweet. I bought my wife an Android fan because she likes the Verizon network. And if they beat iPhone, I think thats great, its only going to make the developers to push harder to be at the top. What I hate is the bias to a product due to its popularity.
I remember years ago, PC fan boys laughing at the fact that Mac couldn’t do this or Mac couldn’t do that, now they have something that can’t be shared and all of a sudden its a major problem and exploited as news.
My main point, Chocolate and Vanilla never seem to get this kind of attention or bashing. People need to grow the fuck up.
I am an Apple fanboy, and have been for some time, but I am also open minded and at least appreciate other forms beside my primary choice.
I tip my hat to Android, Nexus and anything else that is on top. Well done !

        phone not fan

      • Steve

I’d love an Android fan! Swipe right to turn on, swipe left to turn on silent mode…pretty sweet…

  • Beenyweenies

These comparisons are fun and all, but real world results almost never bear them out. I bet the actual real world stock browser speed difference between iOS, Android and Meego is negligible. Also note these are Javascript tests, which is just one of many speed factors in any browser.

Either way, it’s interesting to see these things and hopefully it just drives the manufacturers to do better and better!

    Wow…
    MeeGO seems amazing
