AT&T has just announced that the Samsung Captivate — Ma’ Bell’s version of the Galaxy S — will be available for purchase on July the 18th (T-minus 10 days). The Captivate sports a: 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, 4″ WVGA Super AMOLED display, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, and Android 2.1. The device will be priced at $199 on-contract (no mail-in-rebate necessary). Anyone have plans to pick up the first serious AT&T Android offering? Any disenfranchised iPhone 4 owners thinking of returning their iPiece and taking the Captivate for a spin?

The reviews also mention the several names this device will come under. I thought the Captivate was AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S. So why would the form factor be different unlocked or not? I’m just wondering because I like the device as pictured above better as the others look like iPhones.

So my understanding is that Galaxy S is the model brand Samsung is pimping, sort of like RIM has the Curve.
Major specifications will be roughly the same but there will be some minor form factor/feature differences (Verizon’s S iteration has a front-facing camera, the Captivate does not).

      Hope that helps.

      • not quite

Verizon’s “Fascinate” will not have a front-facing camera…that’s Sprint’s “Epic 4G”…which is probably the most different of all the Galaxy S iterations since it also sports a slide QWERTY keyboard and will be 4G.

The pic u see is the Captivate, AT&T’s version of the
Galaxy S Series. Slickest looking one of all versions in my opinion. This version looks more like a smaller version of The Dell Streak. Dad to the Bone !?!

@Jake,the service is fine for quit alot of folks.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

So my question would be why do they have different physical designs for the phone even though they are all supposed to be the same device but just named differently (which is not uncommon when devices are on different carriers)? Well anyway, the one above looks better anyway. So I’ll play with it for a few when it comes out.

    • Fred Barnett Jr.

Each major Carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint & Celluar South have their own exclusive version of the
Galaxy S Series. Some look like an iphone, other do
not, like AT&T. Of course they’ll come locked to each
Carrier. Releasing to so many major Carriers @ the
same time is Samsung’s attempt to go head to head
      with the iPhone 4 & personally I believe they’ll win !?!

    • Brian Ward

I would guess there are different physical designs on each carrier so that they can be differentiated from other phones on the respective carriers. To satisfy an unfilled niche, in other words.

  • Mr. Sneaky

No, thank you At&t, Droid X suites my lifestyle…

  • Yerrr

Att service is top of the line if ur not using an iPhone u dumb fucks get ur facts straight

    • Fred Barnett Jr.

Actually service & coverage is fine with iPhone also. We
travel all over US & are very pleased with AT&T !?!

  • kyle

Good timing.. I am packing the 4g and sending it back to Steve Job!!

  • Joe Attardi

Also – AT&T is saying that the Captivate will be $350 without a contract.

    • Fred Barnett Jr.

Really ? Where did u pic up this info ?

      • Runciter

        On their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/ATT

I looked on the AT&T Facebook page but I didn’t see anything about the price of the Captivate, much less its full retail being $349. Then again, this article says that it’ll be $199 without a mail-in rebate; if that’s true, once you factor in the standard $150 2-year discount, then the full price would be $349. That would be freakin’ sweet because I’m seriously considering selling my iPhone 4 and using that money to purchase a Captivate (which will put a couple hundred extra bucks in my pocket).

Really ? Where did u pic up this info ?

Thanks Andrew. I know some specs were going to be different for different carriers but I didn’t know the actually form factor would be different. I’ll be interested to see how everyone’s form factor is in relation to each other and with the unlocked Galaxy S. Would they release 3-5 slightly different form factors for Essentially the same phone? Well I guess RIM does it all the time so…

  • Dan

About time. I am definitely picking up one. My old BB Curve is slowly dying. I will miss the Blackberry, but I am ready for a change.

  • joeb

2011 samsung will replace this phone with a 4.3″ screen..I think ill wait n see

  • gizmhed

i saw the phone last night .. a samsung rep came into our store .. its pretty sweet. screen is amazing. jiz for everyone!

  • robert

will this phone be able to do videoshare?

    • ViniD

Yea they are suppose to have DLNA built in

  • Android is ok

Why would this phone only be 349 off contract? Most phones of this caliber cost anywhere from 450-600 off contract. No way this is costing 350. If it does, I would get off contract because an extra 150 is worth not having a 325 etf fee.

    • David A

when did at&t change their ETF, i thought VZW was the only one who charged an obscene amount of money to leave the network?

BTW the Verizon ETF fee is worth it if you switch from CDMA, its about the CALL QUALITY, what cell phones were supposed to be about.

    • http://deanhatescoffee.com Dean

That’s what I’m saying. It would be amazing if this phone was $350 without contract. I originally guessed it would be $450, but that was before BGR reported that there wouldn’t be a mail-in rebate required to get the $199 price. I guess we’ll see in a couple days. :)

  • Steve

YES I AM GETTING THIS!! I WAITED SO LONG THIS TO COME OUT TO AT&T ( OR ANY SERIOUS ANDROID OS PHONE)

I REALLY HOPE THIS PHONE WORKS AS IT WAS MADE TO BE ( I’M SURE AT&T PUT TONS OF GARBAGE APPS AND SH**S IN THE PHONE TO LAG IT DOWN)

    • webby

      Why are you yelling?

  • ernie

Any info on why the camera is only 5MP? I have been waiting, also, for a respectable Android phone on AT&T to be able to really do some comparisons with my iPhone 4 on the network, but nothing yet. However, I was kinda hoping a better camera.
    :-(

    • Fred Barnett Jr.

Remember, more ‘s MP are good, but the lens & sofeware are equally important. This phone has new
KILLER software, with panorama & night setting to
help compensate for no flash, which is usually only
      effective for 2-3′ anyway !?!

    • ViniD

Yea I know how u feel but ATT is not gonna come out with anything close to Droid X until their exclusive contract with the iPhone is over

    • Jamie

Really 5MP is too much for the small sensors in these phones. The more megapixels you pack into these small sensors only equals noisier photos.

  • Jonathan Martis

This phone will be $349.99 off contract. How? I don’t know but AT&T confirmed it several times on their Facebook page, can’t wait to get it! I thought I would spend $400 with an early upgrade but will save an additional $50 and not have to extend my contract! Very nice!

  • MarkByrn

And coming out the gate with 2.1? Knowing Samsung, it’s a flip of the coin on getting Froyo anytime soon.

  • Jason

I love this phone, but no camera flash? Pass.

  • randy savage

This may sound kind of dumb, but does it concern anybody that the non contract price is only $350? Is that an indication towards the build quality of the phone?

    • Jamie

Samsung has build quality issues in all their electronics, so this is no surprise.

      • randy savage

the phone looks pretty cheap in the pictures too. Hmmm, quality vs. features.

    • Fred Barnett Jr.

Not really, maybe Samsung is subsidizing phone, just
to get a heavy jump on competing with iPhone.

  • Counsel

I don’t use my phone fir important pics–I use a dslr… You really need the flash? Taking pics at night outside? Otherwise even my original 1G iPhone works fine…

  • Handler

AT&T apparently thinks stripping the flash off the phones is going to save them a boat load of money. They did it on the Aria, aka Legend, also. They also stripped the Aria of the Legends solid aluminum shell.

AT&T needs to learn not to keep fucking with the phones. None of their modifications make the phone better than what the manufacturer designed to begin with.

    • ozziedog

Is it true that the Captivate is more plastic than metal?

      • Handler

        IDK, never seen one

      • Derek

Yes, the entire thing is plastic. no metal at all.

  • JZ

THANK GOODNESS!!!!!! Something other than that crappy iPhone…..they (ATT) sure did take their sweet time about releasing a decent mobile though…

  • just_ther_facts

at&t did not strip the camera flash off the Captivate. NONE of the Galaxy S phones come with a camera flash. The Galaxy S PRO does have a camera flash, but it is a different phone with a slider keyboard.

    • AT&Trocksinmyworld

Verizon fascinate has a flash as do the european versions.

Anyone know if there are any pre-orders on this unit? I’ve been calling ATT call centers… and they don’t know anything about this device. Nothing from Amazon, Wirefly or LetsTalk either. Hmmmm.

    • bbnetter

Wirefly has it right now at $149.99, shipping tomorrow.

      • Derek

Umm, no they dont. At least not the Captivate. They have the T-mo Vibrant.
