Today, analytics company comScore released their report on the “leading mobile original equipment manufacturers and smartphone operating system platforms in the U.S. according to their share of current mobile subscribers age 13 and older” for May of 2010. Let’s start with smartphone operating systems. comScore’s findings are as follows: RIM 41.7% (-0.4%), Apple 24.4% (-1.0%), Microsoft 13.2% (-1.9%), Google 13% (+4.0%), and Palm 4.8% (- 0.6%). You’ll note that all smartphone platforms listed lost ground…except for Android. As for U.S. mobile OEM manufacturer popularity (not smartphone exclusive): Samsung, LG, Motorola, RIM, and Nokia round out the top five. The study goes onto state that 49.1 million people in the United States now own smartphones; an 8.1% increase from February of this year. What do you think? Surprised by any of the findings?

Ugh.. I wish they hurry up and start letting advantage club members buy them!

    Android FTW!

Apple fanbis will yet again sound the denial with: “BUT THERE ARE LIKE 100 DIFFERENT ANDROID PHONES@!@#$!!@!!@!@!@!@!@@#$$”

    Statistics are statistics.

    • eYe

Nah… they’re too busy crafting new antennas and fireproofing their toys.

    • ernie

But it IS a fact that there are tons of phones on different carriers. When and if Apple opens up to other carriers, it won’t be close.

      • destardi

…and then once again, the iphone will peak. It’s a dead-end group.

      • VerizonHatesApple

Notice the “when and “if” in your comment. There have been numerous rumors about Verizon and Apple, yet no deal has been made. Nothing is going to happen anytime soon.

The large majority of people that bought the new iPhone 4 were existing customers. The remaining people either stuck with what they had (3GS) or realized there’s something better and moved to Android. With the many flaws being presented with the iPhone as of late, if I were Verizon, I would tell Apple to go “F” themselves and get there defective shit out here.

Android WILL become the dominant OS and platform, just a matter of time before all the other Apple sheep realize that the iPhone isn’t actually anything special and that almost all the newer/higher end Android phones blow the new iPhone out of the water easily.

      • Ernie

I don’t understand the term sheep when referring to apple fanboys when you are sheep as well but for google.

      • MikeD

        @Ernie

Basically irrational behavior goes on in their quarters as well. Just look at threads about new Droids and you see the very same behavior as Apple fans. Its quite amusing. My word of advice is as soon as you see the word “sheep” that it totally discredits the posting. And is the true mark of a Fanboy.

Fanboys see no good in anything else. among other things. enjoy this article. http://industry.bnet.com/technology/10009172/why-fanboys-can-be-a-tech-companys-worst-enemies/

That should help you understand his mindset.

        @VerizonHatesApple

I just want to show the flaw in your logic.

Explain to me what is bad about having a lot of return customers?

So when the majority of Droid X buyers are previous Droid owners thats a bad thing?

Seriously your fandom has fried your brain. When will the children here learn that thats one of the priorities of a company is to assure that the customer comes back for more.

Contrary to what you might think. When the Droid X launches I guarantee the initial long lines on day one will be 99 percent previous droid owners, and even other Android device owners. And y’know what. Nothing is wrong with that. You still have a year (or 3 Months) to sell them and grow market share.

Oh wait. You must think HTC and Motorola want to take turns. I can see it now, HTC says to motorola “Okay you can have them now and I’ll take them later.”

The rants here are hilarious. You guys constantly berate other of being on a pedestal, for thinking their better than other people and so on. Do you really look read at what you type? Seriously.

      • Menno

The thing is most Droidx customer’s WON’T be droid customers because the original droid isn’t even a year old yet.

And since the droid was the original android device on verizon, MOST customers getting a droidx at launch will not be original droid owners (unless they are selling/giving their android’s to someone else) which STILL nets in more android sales. Or if 99% of droidx customers (using your numbers) are coming from other carriers. Heck, the only phone that they could be coming from and still be android (assuming no payment of ETFs) would be the freaking G1!

The difference here is that Apple’s upgrade plan is aimed at iphone 3g users and the like. Verizon’s would get people who got the ORIGINAL storm or a similar device, NOT android.

  • stringer

Going from 9% to 13% is growth of 45%. It’s like going from 150 lbs to 218 lbs.

  • http://www.orange.com Alex

    Amateur website !

The comScore report is giving May 2010 figures.

The results are only natural since Droid are the only phones heavily advertised and everyone is waiting for the new iPhone.

    • StevieJobs

A majority of the iphone sales were already apple iphone users. So what?

    • ChocoTaco

Apple has been losing marketshare vs. Android for a few months now, putz.

The iPhone is an entry-level OS. The vast majority of people that have the iPhone have never had a smartphone before, or are coming from a Blackberry and are not used to any multimedia in a smartphone. There are plenty of people that move from the iPhone to Android, but very few that will move from Android to iPhone. Why, you ask? Because Android does a whole lot more than iOS does, and why would someone already adept in multimedia smartphones downgrade to iOS and limit their capabilities?

People don’t downgrade on purpose. They upgrade. People only downgrade based on cost, and since the iPhone is either the same or more expensive than Android phones, you won’t find many people purposely downgrading from Android to iPhone. What you see here is, simply put, people figuring out there is an alternative and upgrading to it.

Why Fanboys Can Be a Tech Company’s Worst Enemies

Being a fanboy is like joining a religion, except instead of a deity, you get a microprocessor, system code, and all the peripherals and accessories you can afford. True fans — whether of Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), or Sony (SNE) — can’t understand how anyone can choose a competing brand. What they don’t generally see is that, ironically, their devotion can actually damage the products and companies they love.

To get better at anything, you have to fail, pick yourself up, and try again. However, this only works when you know you’ve failed. Someone has to rub your nose in the mistakes so you notice them. But you’ll rarely hear real complaints from fanboys. Even when they aren’t pleased with a product, they’ll often couch their language in worshipful tones: “Oh, Wonderful One, I know that the planet orbits on the path your devices calculate, and I want you to know that even though I wish the new product didn’t have this tiny flaw that melts my fiber connection to the Internet, I’m still a loyal customer and hope you don’t get mad at me.”

You really like that article, huh? This article, by one of the grumpiest and long in the tooth tech bloggers, says what many people on these forums think.

        http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2365786,00.asp

Apple just seems to get unbelievably biased coverage and reviews. There is no doubt about this, and people are sick of it. This happens in all areas of life. We put people, things, and companies on pedestals only to despise them when they stick around too long. It’s human nature and all of your own rants propagate it. I see that damn Silver Surfer logo all over these forums, trying to deflate the Apple criticizers. Understand you are also part of the problem, and your well thought out rebuttals will make no difference other than making you feel better. Have fun with that.

      • MikeD

I can tell you a young one. You clearly don’t know the computer industry. I’ll run circles around you.

Apple has constantly been beat up on. There were even Apple deathwatch websites. Apple only recently got its act together. Just because you don’t like Apple, doesn’t mean the News forums have to ignore whats happening. Back in the day Apple couldn’t pay for good press.

Grow up. And deal with it. I see news all the time about Android. Think of how many articles have been about minor updates and a new phone android phone every day other day/week. You don’t see me here bitching about it. You don’t like the press stop reading it.

I’m gonna clue you in on something. If they don’t get the clicks, I can guarantee BGR would stop running articles about Apple. But the incessant complaints about Apple tells them BGR and others to pour it on. All they have to do is write some good or bad about Apple and it brings in a slew of people. You give them NO INCENTIVE TO STOP. Try Stop talking about Apple all together. Try not trolling the Apple topics. Frequent Android discussions threads and have reasonable discussions. But you guys clearly have a #Apple tread going strong (its practically a thread) and all these site care about is CLICKS.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again. The over the top hate just helps. Fanboys of all stripes need to throttle back.

      • mezmryz03

Insightful, I can tell you put about zero effort into that reply. I understand click-through rates just fine, and am getting tired of this conversation as I…not worth it.

  • Steve

If Apple had lost 0.4% and RIM had lost 1.0%, all the blogs would read ‘RIM loses 2.5 times as much market share, than Apple, blah, blah…”. Yet, when as in this case it’s RIM losing 0.4, and Apple losing 1.0% all you hear is crickets!

  • bilbob

    Android is an OS
    iOS is an OS
that is what they are counting, there are other phones out there besides the iphone 4 that run ios. the iphone 3gs was a big seller and 3g and 2g. also, in some other statistics, ive seen apple with a big lead, BUT that counts ipads too because it runs ios. so apple kinda is counting more than one phone

    • Joe B.

Not to mention they’ve also been known to include Ipod Touch in their IOS Statistics as well.

  • NuShrike

Now that Android is basically PAR with WM, it’s really over for WM, if it wasn’t already obvious.

  • MarkByrn

Lord Jobs should be taking notice here considering that Google’s gain is primarily coming at the expense of Apple and assuming Microsoft craps out with WMP7, the disaffected Microsoft types will turn to Google and not Apple. I doubt RIM will lose much market share to Google though.

  • nowadroidfan

Add all of the declines together and it equals 3.9 percent, about what android gained.

  • Perspective

Android is for little boys, Apple haters and blog readers. Sadly, these groups tend to be broke, which is why Verizon has to give away Android phones. It’s also why every quarter Verizon reminds its shareholders that they’re still trying to get the iPhone.

    • trooth

Please pass what you are smoking over this way.
      A. Apple markets to metro-tweens.
      B. Verizon is unadshameably the most expensive carrier and does not appeal to the cheap crowd, that honor goes to Boost and Sprint.
      C. Verizon doesn’t give away Android phones, Buy One Get One means two data plans and the last time I looked the Incredible and Droid X are still running $200.
      D. Verizon states they don’t need the IPhone and runs commercials trashing the IPhone and AT&T. If they get it, it will be on their terms something Apple and Steve Jobs is not very fond of. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

    • Mickey Jones

iPhone is for little posers, soccer moms and celebrities. Sadly, these groups tend to be clueless, which is why AT&T is still in business. It’s also why every quarter AT&T reminds its shareholders that they’re equally clueless for investing in a carrier with one phone.

  • Kyle K.

Surprised? Nope. Android OS FTW! :-)

  • Patrick

    @ perspective
such a stupid argument. My phone cost more therefore is inherently better. NOT. Just because I want to charge you more due to all the advertising dollars I spend on promoting my product doesn’t mean it is better, you are only supporting my need to feel more dominant. In addition android phones are not any less expensive retatil to retail which us interesting because the producers have a free OS as a starting point. With that you could argue that android phones are more expensive and thus better than iphart. But really, just look at the numbers while you iPhone smolders

  • Vince

I love Android for what it can do and because it’s shaken up the status quo. Still, it’s obvious that it has a long way to go before catching BB (3X Android) and iOS (almost 2X Android).

Apple might hold its own (insert rude joke here) now that v4 is out, but there’s not much upside until AT&T exclusivity ends. Also, notice how AT&T is only launching mid-range, impaired Androids, lest not to rock the boat?

BB and WM are dead or dying, although WM will bounce back when “7″ launches. But Microsoft can’t afford a buggy launch because by then Android will be points ahead of the old girl.

  • Eric Schmmidt

Android is better, Android is better, Android is better….

Will other iPhone fans join me so the aggressive Android fans will sod off?

  • Keymaker

Are they even a reliable source lol.

  • dwayne

Seems like RIM is still going strong. amid all the hyoed devices coming out this year, they are still selling more smartphones.

  • mingkee

I am glad I made a right decision to join Android platform.
Nexus One is pretty nice, but more internal storage would make it much better.

  • MikeD

I’m glad to see Android has made some positive moves. Now could BGR flesh it out more and give us a break down of that 13% percent.

How much is Googles, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG and so on.

It’ll be interesting to see how the 13% pie is split.

    • mingkee

HTC is taking lead while motorola is close to second due to Droid.

  • B

The only thing that surprises me is that Microsoft is still that high.

  • Steve

For all the naysayers of Blackberry…….

Seems with all the hype with iPhone and Android Blackberry is still very strong!

    • Bill

Indeed it is, but that is clearly not a story the blogs are interested in telling these days.

  • YoYoYo

There are atleast 14 android phones available on the US careers so the fact that Android is gaining market is a no brainer im share if apple had 4 iPhones on each career they would gain market too. When Microsoft releases Windows Phone 7 im sure they will gain market share. Windows Mobile has a huge number of people that are waiting for 7

  • molten83

First of all I will say that I have not used iphone extensively but I really dont like apple products but thats my opinion. Now android is really picking up and I myself is thinking of jumping to it from windows if wm 7 phone dont really appeal to me.I stuck with wm because I used my phone mostly for work ie excel, powerpoint et al, but to admit I am just waiting to see how ms new OS feel like to use which looks good though and I am not talking about the stupid homescreen but the OS as a whole.
Most people bash each other over what phone and what OS they are using but forget to think that it their right to choose what OS they want to use.It is called choice. Granted apple might sell more if not for the exclusive deal with AT&T but yet again who knows. What I have seen is most android users accuse apple OS or whatever its called users of being fanboys but their behavior is just like apple fanboys anyway.I remember when th HD2 was coming out, hardly a day goes by without someone posting a comment about “I wished it had andriod on it but it was crippled with wm”,That is being a fanboy if you ask me. I think apple f**ked up big time with the iphone 4 or so it seems and wm also big time with the kin, which was a bad idea to begin with.
So let all get along and stop the finger pointing, name calling and just choose what is best for us.If you dont own shares in these companies, this report means jack to you!
