LCD components for 4th generation iPod Touch reveal hole for front-facing camera?

Rumor

ipod_touch_4_gen_lcd_digitizer

International trade company Alibaba has posted two purported components for the next generation iPod Touch. These products include an LCD assembly unit with digitizer and a stand-alone digitizer (both of which include a hole in the top center of the assembly that could be used for a front-facing camera). These components potentially support the notion of a front-facing camera put forth earlier by UK retailer John Lewis, however, as MacRumors points out, the implied back-to-back positioning of a front and rear-facing camera on a device as slim as the iPod Touch is difficult, if not impossible. If Apple was going to include a center front-facing camera as shown above, the rear camera must be positioned to the side or removed completely. In light of this camera positioning information, what do you think? Real or just some fake knock-offs?

and all those crazy people with iphone 4′s will still buy this even though their phone already has this function.
unless they’re holding it wrong :)

    • George

      You know nothing.

      • Mike

        no, YOU know nothing! BURN!

I need to upgrade to an iPod Touch and I am waiting to see what the new model has to offer. Hopefully it is the retina display (would be totally gay if wasn’t), and A4 processor. I don’t care so much about the camera but if it came with the same front and rear cameras as the iPhone 4 that to would be a great added value.

Don’t be ignorant expressing yourself dad, honestly.

  • haha

I think if it does have a front facing and rear facing…. then apple will still hold major control over the MP3 market.

It would be a great alternative for people who can’t afford the iphone 4 plus a 2 year plan. OR for people who hate ATT.

    • haha

apparently I got downgraded because someone out there is upset with the Zune they bought….

  • DubYa

Must be the Verizon iPhone (MiFi not included).

  • MarkByrn

If there’s one thing we can count on, it’s that Lord Jobs will not make an iPod Touch that’s on par with the more lucrative iPhone.

  • George

That’s good, but it looks slightly odd that the hole for the camera is closer to the actual screen, whereas on the iPhone it’s raised up a bit more next to the speaker.

    • bilbob

well, it isnt an iphone, sooooooooooooooooo…..

      • George

I understand that, but Apple usually tends to stick with similar designs.

  • Nick Delgado

if it has a front facing camera, it must have a microphone too..

  • Seanyboii

I Hate how ppl are still thinking this new iPod will have the same shell/body. Obviously if the iPhone got a new shell this iPod should have a much similar design to accommodate the camera’s and new processor if it’s getting one. I bet that when this new iPod comes out it will have almost the exact same flat rectangle style as the iPhone 4, but we have 1.5-2months to wait, so how about we all just stfu till Steve does his thing and it hits the market. Just a thought. ;)

    • bilbob

you know we cant do that, what will we occupy ourselves with.
i guess we could talk about all the iphone 4 issues. that could take a while

      • Seanyboii

Yea I guess lol, but we all kno the iPod touch will be getting a camera since there are 3 prototypes that were 3rd gen prototypes that got scraped last year because of failing sensors.

    • Mike

WOW! Someone on the Internet has a modicum of common sense! I have found the unicorn!

I’m a little upset that Apple won’t carry the iOS4 on the 1st gen iPod Touch. I get that they can’t keep making things for it, but c’mon! They are forcing myself and others like me to go out and buy a new product. I shall say that the iPod touch 4th gen sounds very appealing, though! :)

  • TucsonAZ

Its obviously the new iPhone for Verizon. duh.

i have a thought, now follow me here, facetime, over wifi. and ipod touch, is it apples overall goal to do away with voice plans? and use only a data network?
what if….you build a 3g/4g ipod touch with facetime, now you have a mobile communicator. you can now call anyone with facetime, iphone, ipod, and mac,,,, in the future,,, only data, no voice plan needed.

facetime uses the mac address of iphone4, and would use the same protocall for ipod touch,,

    what do you think????

    • Mike

I think that if you make a 3g/4g iPod touch with facetime, you arrive at an invention called the iPhone. The only reason facetime uses the MAC address of the iPhone4, is because all devices on any wireless network, whether WiFi, EDGE, 3g, or 4g, use MAC addresses to communicate. IP addresses can change but a MAC address belongs to certain device. Protocols are embedded into a program, so common sense tells me that any program or app will use the same protocols no matter what platform it is running on.

  • Velmond

If Apple wanted to put a rear camera on the iPod touch they would’ve done it with the 3gen…
I guess they HAVE to put a front facing camera, `cuz otherwise they’d be isolating the Facetime feature only inside of the “iPhone community”… which wouldn’t be such a good idea because what good is a feature if you can’t use it… I know the iPhone is very popular in the states, but it’s not so much worldwide and I personally wouldn’t give >1000$ (that’s as much as it’s going cost when it comes out where I’m from) for a phone that I can’t even make a single video call… I already have friends that have phones with a front facing camera (FOR YEARS) and they can video call to any other phone whit a front facing camera…
So they pretty obvious HAVE to put in a front facing camera…

    • Mike

You have to realize, Velmond, that Apple, while not a cheap company, is a slow one. Steve Jobs has a disease called CDO. It’s like OCD, except all the letters are in order… Like they should be! Everything has to be perfect. If certain things were not conducive to Apple implementing a front-facing camera on the iPhone 3g or 3gS, then Steve needed to fix it. Meanwhile people are salivating over the release of the newest generation, good old Steve needs to send out a version without it, and plan to put it in the next. The same thing happened with the video camera (and still camera.)

    LOL @ the ocd illustration

  • http://Blanks.com Genious

Isn’t that the spot for the auto brightness? It’s right there on the other itouchs

  • http://alghienkad06.student.ipb.ac.id/ thea

    LOL

  • COdy

um, im sure that is the light sensor that controls the brightness of the screen, and i dont think the iPod Touch is going to have the retina desplay, new iphone4/ipad design, the new A4 cpu, and wirless N. I think the back camera on the touch is probably not going to happen, and definately not a front facing one, well we all dont know for sure, gotta wait till Steve shows us :)

  • COdy

opps get rid of the DONT lol… i DO think the ipod is going to have the retina desplay etc………. :P

  • kev

Guys – look at it. Its exactly the same as a 2G/3G Digitizer, except with a hole in the middle. Now let me ask you: how easy do you think it would be to cut a hole in any old iPod digitizer and say its for a camera? I’m not saying its fake, I’m just saying that if it is, it was very, VERY easy to make.

  • Sisco Blue

These comments are getting longer and longer! Just saying. I can’t wait for the new Ipod Touch!

  • Jacob

I do not think that is for a camera. I have a current iPod touch and there is some sort of sensor there.
