AppBrain Fast Web Installer, push Android applications from the web to your phone

One of the killer features demoed at Google I/O, on Android 2.2, was the OS’ ability to install pushed applications right from Google’s Market website. Unfortunately, Google has yet to update the Android Market (or its website) with this functionality, however the underlying code that makes this possible is ready to go in Froyo. AppBrain, “a website which makes sense out of the high number of apps available in the Android market,” has developed its own application titled Fast Web Installer that will provide this functionality for your Android 2.2 device right now. Install and authorize the app, visit appbrain.com, click install, and you’re done. The client will fully install requested applications without user interaction; applications still have to be uninstalled directly from the handset. Now, AppBrain’s utility may be short lived — since Google will definitely be rolling out the exact same service — but if you have a 2.2 device with Android, give AppBrain Fast Web Installer a shot.

Okay I gotta know. Why did he get a -2 already?

He wrote like he’s an Android user and he gets a -2 for a having an opinion thats slightly critical?

Damn you guys eat your own.

Thanks wow, I guess I should have mentioned that I do like it a lot. I just wished I could also push updates to my phone when they become available. Would be nice.

        @kerrhome

It was a very reasonable response/request. And a very logical function that would compliment the Apps core capability.

The reason it doesn’t nobody knows except Google. Maybe they want to get this App right first then add that capability. I know it may frustrate the “I want it now” fanatics. But clearly it was omitted for the moment and I think it will come in due time. But your question was a very good one IMHO.

That would be amazing, just need an update all button..

      • gilligan156

Android 2.2 gives you both an Update All button, and you can set apps to update automatically when updates are available.

        It’s pretty sweet!

Uhm…you don’t have to be on 2.2. 1.5 or higher.

Correct. Come on Andrew. How about a little bit more accurate reporting.

        Thanks, fixed!

Works perfect on HTC Desire with 2.1

    Interesting. Very interesting.

But I have serious security concerns. Pushing Apps on to a phone could turn in to a disaster especially if the Apps that are trojans.

I’d like to see all App stores security tightened. Let me repeat before some idiot gets it twisted. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ALL APP STORES tighten their security before I would allow pushing apps to my phone let alone my desktop computers.

    But the concept is interesting.

I wouldn’t set up my phone to install programs without confirmation.

Symbian has always had the ability to install programs from anywhere, but they have to be digitally signed and the phone confirms the installation anyway.

This is why I like the open source of android. You could never put something like this on the iPhone.

    • MikeD

      @Patrick

Okay explain why? And don’t get emotional. Explain exactly why?

    • MikeD

And where the hell does the iPhone fit in to this? Seriously?

      • vzw rocks

It fits because they are so tight on security it may be to a fault. They just approved the flash on the new Iphone 4 to be used whenever the user wants ie flashlight. seriously dont get me wrong im not hating but i see Patricks point. I agree with you about security. I have an antivirus downloaded on my droid that checks any app automatically for anything malicious.

      • vzw rocks

*They just approved the flash on the new Iphone 4 to be used whenever the user wants ie flashlight* Meant to add to this that it was a stretch for this to be approved given the track record of apple and really controlling there product no matter how practical the app seems

      • MikeD

When it comes to people phones and sensitive data, bring on the tight security. Its a good thing.

You are mixing up an approval process with real security measures.

Apple could deploy an App like this in a snap. (or any others) My focus is flat out Security. Bad things happen when apps can install themselves its a world of hurt waiting to happen, especially if malware gets in to an App store, really bad things can happen.

This is a platform independent issue. Its a Security issue that all users should be concerned about if capabilities like these are added to your platform.

        That is all.

  • lolobabes

it seems not to work on my unrooted N1 FRF91
