Twitter handling 24 billion search queries per month

Twitter Search Bar

Twenty four billion. That is how many times users are searching Twitter per month; a truly gargantuan figure. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone noted that twitter.com now handles roughly 800 million search queries per day, a 33% increase from April of this year. To put that number in perspective, Yahoo! handles roughly 9.4 billion search queries per month, while Bing handles around 4.1 billion. Almost makes you a bit more tolerant of the fail whale, now doesn’t it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say again… Twitter is just a fad like low-carb diets.

I thought that at first too, then i started using it and its pretty cool. i like how it can be more fast-paced than facebook and how there isnt too much to deal with. you just tweet or look at people tweets.

OK, so they’re handling 24B search queries per month. Against a database of 140 character entries. Looking for (more of less) exact hits. Doesn’t really compare to what Google, Bing, or Yahoo do (regardless of the volume), in terms of the degree of searching necessary or the size of the index it’s searching against.
