HTC Wildfire, Incredible, EVO 4G to get Android 2.2 by December

Software

froyo

Pocket-lint has HTC’s global PR and online community manager, Eric Lin, on the record saying that his company will be “done with our Froyo updates before Christmas.” Lin explains that porting all of HTC’s applications (Sense UI. etc.) over to Android 2.2 and testing said software is no small task. The full quote is as follows:

“It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect.”

This is one reason we would like to see manufacturers, and carriers, release less moded versions of Android; less testing for third-party apps, shorter QA time, and so on. What do you think Wildfire, Incredible and EVO owners? Is this the timeline you were expecting, or are you a little disappointed?

My Incredible will be gone next week when the DX comes out. The Incredible is an incredible disappointment.

You apparently haven’t rooted your incredible. Also, have fun with your tightly locked down bootloader and phone-that’s-too-big-to-fit-in-your-hand.

It really doesn’t bother me. I know that the update is coming, and would much rather they try to do it RIGHT. A few weeks ago while talking to Sprint, the tech I was speaking with said they were targeting August for the Evo update. If it happens, great. If not, no worries.

How many HTC Android devices x how many carrier customizations x how many localities x how many languages. Yes, it’s going to take time to get the stable of devices upgraded.

I actually expected this timeline because of HTC Sense. I am going to go on a limb here and say I am OK with it. I frankly do not want to compromise my user experience because I want a particular update faster than sooner.

What I really want is the ability, without voiding my warranty, to switch between Vanilla and Custom Android. Is there a reason why they cannot just release Froyo with Desire/EVO/etc. drivers and let users who want to use that?
Then when they are done we can move back to Sense. That way I get to choose what I want. Is that wrong? I know it increases their workload, but a happy customer comes back for seconds – especially for desserts. And we all know what Android and desserts have in common ;-)

Disappointed in the timeline, but still LOVE the phone. Nothing better, IMHO, on the foreseeable horizon anyway. (Certainly not the Droid X!)

Very disappointed. Android 2.2 has been out for awhile now. HTC should have been working on this update since the day it was officially released. If you ask me its just another poor customer service of a company that could care less about its customers. HTC has the ultimate phone for Android (EVO) and they are dragging their feet bring the OS to it. Shame on HTC! May have to look at getting rid of this one if they don’t change their tune.

I admit I am one of those people who want anything that’s shiny and has the label “NEW” slapped on it and so are a lot of you obviously. But the ones who are complaining about it taking so long will be the first ones to complain if its effed up because they rushed it to get it to our impatient butts. My point is I’d rather have it done right and flawless as it can get than have it eff up my phone. I would like it to get here faster, don’t we all? But I want it done right. There, that’s my two cents.

Actually, Froyo has only been out for a couple of weeks

I’m hoping for a little sooner….but I prefer the sense UI. maybe when 3.0 comes out I’ll like the stock UI enough to want HTC to abandon the sense UI but until then I’ll wait patiently for HTC to put it out.

“B.S.! Android 2.2 is HOT!!! It doesn’t need Sense or Blur to look good. If HTC and Moto were smart, they would already have transitioned to widget based customization that their phones could download from the Market, rather than a full skin.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I don’t understand why HTC won’t give us the ability to turn Sense off. I mean, at first when Hero came out, compared to stock Android, it was the shit. Now, it’s just kinda cool to have and can make performing some tasks a bit easier with their widgets, but if they won’t give the enduser the ability to drop Sense or put those Sense widgets in the market for the user to download, it’d be easier for them to update the OS. Yes, I agree, and it only makes sense, that for them to take as long as December to finish updating all the versions of Sense UI Android phones using different screens and on different networks and different internals, they’d need the time to get it right. But Moto is dropping 2.2 like next month… Thinking about taking the EVO 4G back and jumping to VZW for the Droid X… even the original Droid dropped with 2.0 and it came out around the same time the HTC Hero (my former phone) came out, and it came out with 1.5, which was outdated, didn’t get 1.6, and jumped straight to 2.1, but it took almost 8 or so months for the update to finally happen. Stock Android FTW!

    it better myself

I was actually hoping for more like September/October but, making sure it’s a flawless experience when updating OTA takes precedence.

However, ahhh emmm …. I am really EXPECTING HTC to take some initiative and make it there number one priority to see the GPU updated and OpenGL is utilized !!! PLEASE HTC/GOOGLE FIX THIS! I mean its pretty sad my mother’s ORIGINAL IPHONE (2006 if I’m not mistaken) UI scrolls smoother than my 45 day old and twice the hardware phone. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great phone but, if Android truly seeks the crown then they must adapt even if that means taking our grandfather G1 off life support. Sorry guys…. your eligible for and upgrade right… how bout a My Touch W/GENIUS BUTTON ? ALL I’M SAYING IS UNLEASH THE 1GHZ BEASTS YOU’VE CREATED !!! EVO 4G, DROID X, GALAXY, NEXIS ONE, DROID INCREDIBLE, DROID 2, and the list goes on……YOU CAN DO IT ….. ANDROID FTW !!!

a bit sad about maybe not getting it til December, although i must be honest, i’m not very savvy about gadgets and how they work, i love my Evo, and the Froyo sounds super cool, so i really want it, but i don’t really know what it does?? but like everyone has said, i guess i would like for it to be done right, hate dealing with bugs.

  • J.

Sorry, have to add, everything i just said is true, however, seeing as i am paying an extra $10.00 a month for a service i really can’t use unless i travel about 6-7 miles (i can’t use 4g at home!) it would be nice of HTC/Sprint, to try and make sure my phone experience is at the top of all cell phones!!!( I am an X Apple iphone user, so i do tend to expect alot!!! OK i’m done, thanks!
