Netflix announced on Tuesday that the movie rental giant has signed an agreement with independent movie producer Relativity Media. Relativity Media is a newcomer to the movie production business, but the growing company has the backing of bigwigs like Lions Gate Entertainment, Sony Pictures, and Universal Studios. Under the agreement, Netflix would get the first rights to stream popular movies that are typically sent to premium cable channels like Starz, HBO, and Showtime following the movie’s DVD release. This arrangement is a major leap forward for online streaming as it is the first time a major movie producer has turned to online sources for movie distribution instead of traditional paid television. Netflix will be launching this preferred streaming with “The Fighter” and “Skyline”; additional movies are expected to be added in the future.

Nice, I have been a long time Netflix subscriber and have access to it streaming many ways and this just adds to it. I don’t have any premium channels on my Directv, so this works out great. I wonder if this comes free with the subscription.

Of course its free. This will just be an ad-on just like when they added HD streaming capabilities as well. Which, Netflix HD is pretty bad ass.

The end us drawing near for cable TV as we know it. One day in the future our TV will just be on-demand content. Should be interesting. No longer will we have 300 channels but nothing on TV. We will get to watch what we want when we want it.

You can do that now, it’s called a DVR.

Time shifting is not the same thing as on-demand. Yeah, you can DVR record a show and watch it later, but you have to wait for it to air the next time first, even if it’s an old show/movie.

What if I want to watch a movie now?

Stop buying DVD’s now!!!! In a year or two you will have more companys like this that the only way to watch a dvd is online…. and there will be blu ray quality as the internet speed is increased.

DVD’s are going to be non existent in 2-3 years. As well as buying Blueray at $25-30 a pop
