Microsoft Windows Phone 7 coming earlier than expected to AT&T?

According to a tip Engadget received, it’s possible. Apparently, some refreshed AT&T retail promotional material has been leaked, and it’s all for a July 24th in store refresh. AT&T stores routinely get display materials ahead of product launches, and the earliest we’re looking at for a possible launch here is September (according to historial promotional shipments to stores), but we wouldn’t be surprised to see that turn into October or possibly even November. Microsoft has only gone on record to confirm that the device series will launch in “holiday 2010″ so that’s obviously open for interpretation. With the two largest and hottest mobile operating systems out there constantly covering new ground (Android and iOS), are you still excited to see WP7 take shape?

I don’t think so. If it was, they would be promoting it like crazy. They know that new iPhones and Android phones have been released and they would need heavy marketing.

I like the way the new WP7 phones are looking. I’m tired of the same square icon set everyone is using now. Pretty happy that MS went in a new direction. I’m gonna grab one if I’m not in a contract.

  • Jay

Yes. Even though I use iPhone, I’m interested to see how the new platform performs and does in the marketplace.

  • Josiah

If WP7 has a clean interface and doesn’t allow manufacturers to clutter it up like some of the Android devices I’ve seen (Evo) they stand a real shot at grabbing *back* marketshare.

    • T

And if it has the interface as seen on the Kin?

      • JMR

The OS on the Kin is a (or should I saw was a) ‘cousin’ of 7, but BGR and others have already released photos showing the 7 interface.

That’s not a very enticing interface. Especially for as long as it has been in development. In fact it looks like the alternate interface for 6.5! Not very impressed.

I am pretty excited for WP7. Right now, I’m pretty happy with my Droid… and very much doubt I’ll switch, but competition between vendors = win for consumers! So, I’m hoping they bat it right out of the park and send everyone else scrambling to top it.

Windows took a hit because the new generation wanted “Apps”. They simply don’t understand the power of Winmo. Windows could do everything any other phone could do, just not as attractively because it was more directed towards business operations. Given the new structure, I feel Winmo7 will be a great platform.

I have a HTC TP2. WM phones always had the apps, but besides a few of them, they feel clumsy and not as fluid as the apps found on Android and IOS. I love being able to hack my phone. I now have Android 2.2 on it and it’s great.

    • MicroNix

WinMo was a powerful OS. Just that the presentation of the OS like it was a desktop was a misguided kludge. And that fact you had to *hunt* to find applications for it. I don’t like some of the direction they are taking with 7. Backing off on multitasking features, limiting apps to store apps and the interface doesn’t have that extra eye candy that WM7 is going to *require* to steer folks away from competition which is making leaps and bounds while MS desperately tries to get *an* OS out the door.

      • AN

The old design took a beating in stability, perf, and the overall “just works” feel that most people want on their phones. It’s great to have a task manager on your phone, but if you *need* to bring it up on a regular basis, that’s annoying.

I wonder what phone took that pic….notice the green tint in the center :(

WP7 will probably be better than the other platforms, but I think it will come too late. we are talking about 6 months from now, people! In 6 months, Android will reinforce its stronghold and Apple will fix their problems.

Given the fact that no new WinMo 6.5 phones are coming out, MS should have started promoting the new platform right now. Everywhere, you hear about Android and iOS; WinMo is non-existant except in old devices. I wonder if people are still buying those anyway?

I probably will still get one if it’s stable, to replace my touch pro2. Maybe. If there are stability of performance issues reported, forget it. It’s going to be Android come the holidays.

    • jaxstate

There are several WM 6.5 devices coming out. Go check out wmexperts.

    • AN

If they’ve rewritten it completely and scrapped useful features to focus on stability and it’s *still* not stable? Geez, it’s beyond hope at that point.

    @Rono,

couldn’t have said it better. I’d have love to tried out a new WP7 on a Motorola but waiting 6 more months? No thanks. With the Droid X and iPhone 4 out with the software update coming, I’ll settle for those. and to the crowd out there who are waiting for the WP7 good luck! I pray that WP7 will be a step up from all Windows Mobile device previous.

Web OS going from 2 to 5 devices is far more interesting than 7.

    • http://www.highhopestheband.com Pit

      5 means 5 devices, not 5 different devices. The 6 WinPhone 7 devices probably mean 2 or 3 only (Samsung/LG/HTC ?).

I can’t wait to see the next Palm, but I’m afraid it will be has-been as the Pre was when it came out. What killed Palm is their so slow devices release rate, and HP is even worse at that so even if WebOS is great it’s already and sadly over for them. If at least the Pre had a 3.5″ screen and a better battery life it would have been a must…

  • Sir Robin

I imagine there will still be a stylus ….
how else can you do all the soft resets.

    • MicroNix

+1 – if there was one thing you could count on with WM6 was having to reset that dang thing. Still have a TP2 for work and it is the first one that actually works most of the time (upgraded to 6.5). All my devices prior to that were nothing but resets 2 or 3 times a week.

WARNING: Don’t invest in Windows Phone 7

We can see Microsoft running around like the Keystone Kops.

Software programmers would be mad to invest any time or resources into the Microsoft Mobile Fiasco. Windows Phone 7 will fail just like all Microsoft’s other mobile devices.

    • dario

WinMo from PocketPC (2000 I think it was released) up until 5.1 did quite well thank you. Your memory is short lived.

The problem is it did not address the coming of Apple. Considering WinMo did everything Apple did without the clean interface or fresh thinking it is a shame it dropped so quickly as far market share is concerned. But that is what you get for resting on your laurels. They defeated Palm and thought that was enough for the time being. Boy were they wrong.

  • zack

I think that WP7 will be a real success if Microsoft and carriers/OEMs market it well. Given time, I even believe it could overtake Android. Android isn’t really seen by consumers to be an “iPhone Killer”, more like an alternative. An intuitive and fluid UI could really give Android a run for its money.

    • dario

Exactly, Android is seen as an alternative. A shame, but that can change quickly. WP7 should not, and cannot afford to assume anything. They should expect fierce competition from all fronts – Apple, Android, etc.

My problem is with MS upper management. They are WP7′s worst enemy at this point.

      • http://www.highhopestheband.com Pit

MS upper management knows the future is all about WinPhone now, so they will push it hard. This is why they killed the Kin, to focus on one mobile system only.

I just can’t wait for all these “Zune phones” coming in october :) A Dell Lightning for me ?

    • MicroNix

Conversely, the iPhone isn’t considered to be an Android killer either. Rather a less technically advanced product for those that like simplicity.

I think WM7 is going to have a real tough time. It is going up against two well established and fairly refined products. Microsoft’s blunder of what they called WM6 and 6.5 has showed their incompetence in competing in the smartphone market and unless WM7 has something sensational that Android and iOS lack, it will be quickly written off.

  • justme

if a consumer wants apps they should go winmo their are what like 1.2 million winmo apps? it is not a beginers platform and isnt designed for game play… althought winmo 7 will change that

    • MicroNix

Umm, WM7 is a new platform which is going to require new apps as old ones are said to not work. And no way in hell was there 1.2 million WM apps on the old platform anyway!!!! LOL

    • AN

There might well have been 1.2 million apps… but 1 million of them haven’t been updated since 2002 and don’t always work right on current handsets.

  • offday

I can’t WAIT for WP7. if it’s anything like my Zune OS, I’m gonna love it!

    • http://www.highhopestheband.com Pit

      it is indeed ;)

  • kingfish

I am pretty excited to see what they bring out. The main reason I plan to buy one is also the main reason I may not: the UI is new. I love the hub design and think it looks pretty slick but the OS is probably bare bones and will be lagging behind Apple and Google. I have had Blackberrys, an iPhone, and currently using a Telstra HD2 but I am sick of the app centric world. Come holiday time, I will be testing the new WP7 devices vs the new Blackberry devices but I am leaning towards the WP7. Please don’t Kin this one Microsoft.

  • Awin.7

Too late Andoid is my smartphone of choice.

  • justme

actually micronix their are roughly that many and most take a simple update to run on the newest versions of winmo.. just like apps from the other platforms run on upgraded versions of their os…

  • orko138

They had better wait until they get it right. One wrong move and this will be a catastrophic failure for MS. I hope it doesnt fail – the gaming potential is huge, and with MS inroads into the cloud, it would be such a huge hit to the company.
