iPhone 4 Carrier Unlock

Dev-team member MuscleNerd gave an update — via Twitter — on the carrier unlock progress of the iPhone 4…and so far, things are looking up. The baseband-unlocking code used by the dev-team on the first, second, and third generation iPhones (ultrasn0w) needs to be completely rewritten for the fourth generation model — thanks to a new baseband employed by Apple. MuscleNerd quips:

    yeah but since tmobile is the only other GSM network and they don’t use micro sim cards, it is useless for people in the US

      There are tons of posts on how to cut down a SIM to make it a micro. I even saw a tool (similar to a paper hole punch) that you can buy. It even had an adapter that would let you put the micro-sim into a normal device.

      You can just cut your regular SIM to make a micro-SIM. that is what Michael had to do to get his Rogers SIM in his unlocked iPhone 4 :)

    In the US, what good does an unlocked do? You’re only other option would be Tmobiles edge network which barely covers as much space as At&t’s 3% coverage.

      You would be surprised at how many people have an iPhone on t-mobile. They want the iPhone but they don’t want AT&T and they are content with Edge. An unlocked/jailbroken iPhone goes for a good 25%+ on eBay above a standard iPhone. It’s a great seller’s market if you have an older iPhone you want to dump.

    I meant 3G not 3%, but you could say 3% in total area od the US covered so I wasn’t entirely innaccurate there….

    Heck AT&T SHOULD unlock out of contract devices at least but it is just corporate arrogance and lack of customer service both for Apple and ATT.

    If I were to purchase the iphone4 from at&t, then break the contract, could I use the unlock on t-mobile without issues? I have heard and read that trying to use the iphone unlocked on another carrier could be difficult due to apple and at&t trying to make it cumbersome and locked down.

    Next question, how can one in the USA find and purchase an iphone4 that is unlocked in another country for use here in the USA?

      Apple Canada plans to sell the iP4 unlocked. You’d need to get it in person or have it shipped to someone in Canada as Apple Canada will not ship it outside the country. It will also cost you a fair bit more as you’ll need to buy it at full price and it’ll likely be $799 or more for the 32GB.

        ok wow that is a lot. I thought about buying from at&t and paying the higher cancellation fee. But I would probably wait to do that till the unlock for iphone4 is confirmed.

    Simple mobile…40 bucks a month for unlimited talk and text that uses t mobile tower for reception..it’s simcard would fit to iPhone 4 just need to cut it to fit..

    Well i cant wait for the iphone to be released here in South Africa. No unlock necessary for me as vodafone is the only carrier that has the iphone and im with vodafone.
