India asks Google, Skype, and RIM for access to email and other data

According to the Economic Times, India’s government has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) to send a notice to RIM, Skype, and Google requesting that each service open its email and other communication data to the Indian government. The data must be presented in a format that is readable by security and intelligence agencies and has given each company 15 days to comply with this request.  If a company fails to meet this deadline, it risks being banned or blocked by the government of India. This latest request escalates the ongoing dispute between RIM and India over access to RIM’s proprietary BIS and BES services and expands it to include these other service providers. Neither RIM, Skype, nor Google has responded to this latest request so we will have wait to see how this all turns out.

    Considering the corruption in my country (yes, I’m an Indian), I’d say this will make it possible for rich guys to spy on us. I definitely don’t like this idea one bit.

    If they want to fight terrorism, they should take care of political corruption, train the defense forces better (they may be the largest or some of the largest in the world, but that doesn’t matter cause they totally *suck* at doing their job), incorporate technology that other countries have been using for decades.. the list goes on. There are lots of things they could do which would be much more effective.

    I’m pretty sure that that this was all planned by some corrupt officials as a way to make some big money.

    P.S. If any of this had been said before, I apologize.

      Indian army the 3rd largest in the world in numbers is ranked 4th in the world in terms of ‘capability’.

      Its the politicians and the bureaucracy which is corrupt and misuse the defense forces, do not ignorantly say the Indian defense forces suck at their job.

        look at how they get massacred by naxalites. its obvious that whatever “standard” has been used to measure their capabilities and rank them no.4 worldwide, is a grossly outdated system of ranking.
        theres always room for improvement, and, i’m sure our forces will get there one day.. soon.

        that said. Until they realize that bureaucrats and politicians are going to keep hampering their efforts, nothings gonna change.

        the military needs to be given a lot more freedom, and have people with actual military experience giving the orders, not pot bellied soft khadi donning hypocrites.

    Most of your software comes from India. Your silicon valley thrives on software engineers from India and China.
    Most of your call centers are outsourced to India. Many of your bankrupted companies like Citi group, Motorola etc are revived by Indian CEO. Your Boeing Inc is getting biggest orders from Indian carriers and is practically surviving on it. And yes, your government is interested to provoke and fuel India-Pakistan feud so that it can sell weapons to both and make some money to support unemployed jobless people like you. These are just few things. Next time think before you write something like that, well if you have brain thats functional. Thats not too much to ask for. Is it?

    i think, this is nuthing more than money making tool. Govt is smart enough to make money from these companies to run the show. Dont you think so? On the flypp side, if google, skype and RIM says a No and shuts the door, i think that will be something that Indian goverment wouldnt have planned for. That move can work.

    But well, in a market of 650 mobile users and 13 million internet users, taking such a step is next to being foolish.
