Rumor: Licensing is holding up cloud-based iTunes

According to tips sent in to Electronista, the reason that Apple’s planned iTunes streaming service yet to be released is due to the fact that the Cupertino-based company has yet to finalize licensing deals with major record labels. Apple currently has licensing deals which allow customers to stream music from their own computers to their devices, but streaming music directly from Apple’s servers — one of the features we mentioned in our exclusive on the service — would require a new deal be inked. Although Apple would like to get the deal finalized as soon as possible, allegations that many  record label executives have not have the service detailed to them indicates we may still have a ways to go.

What’s interesting to me is that if Apple, who already has relationships with these companies, is held up, what does that say about Google and their attempt to enter the Music foray. I would think they are even further behind.

      Maybe Google started before Apple?

& is Google even trying to do the same thing as Apple?
I thought they were just trying to set up a music store, not streaming service?

I wouldn’t characterize Apple or Google being behind one another. It really doesn’t matter honestly. Its about business. The rights holders want an equitable deal and dummy thinking the music rights holders are playing sides is very naive and a total fanboy.

Both will hash out deals and both will have music to offer. Apple does have the lead in a sense because they have a much more mature music store business that has proven itself. Google will garner success from its sizable following of Google fans thats are as rabidly loyal as Apple users they love to hate. Amazing how similar they are.

I personally think we’ll see two great music services.

FYI @Aaron the dummy statement wasn’t aimed at you, What I meant to say is:

“any dummy thinking the music rights holders are playing sides is very naive and a total fanboy.”

Just want to clear that up before it gets twisted.

    Buy Rhapsody you cheap bastards.

That’s weird, I thought iPhone 4′s inability to access the cloud was holding things up.

That right there was funny. I might be a huge Apple guy but that was funny. If you are not laughing you need to get over yourself.

  • Go figure

I would want to hurry up too. They are gonna need that to help because with the ip4 fiasco it’s not gonna be good for awhile.

Strange, it seems like just yesterday I read somewhere that “Apple iTunes in the cloud definitely happening soon.”

Apple can suck it. I hope Google does it first. And apologizes later. And makes it free.

    • Jarrett

Ahhhh, free and quality, two things that will never go together.

      • Obisun

Good one, that made me laugh. So True….

Big deal, it happens when it happens and knowing the music industry and how they hate apple and ITunes, forget about it.

  • Ivan Bloggo

If Itunes was in a cloud, wouldn’t all the AT&T users end up going over their 2gb/month data plans?
