Google VP: Music service to launch in Q4 alongside Android 3.0

Services

new-google-logo

According to Israeli newspaper Calcalist, Google VP of Engineer Gaurav Jain has gone on the record as stating that his company will launch its oft-rumored music service before the year’s end. Set to debut in Q4, Jain went on to say that the music service will be predominantly featured in the next version of its mobile OS, Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread). The timing of Jain’s statements — not to mention the fact he made them at all — are curious, as rumors are heating up that Apple is gearing up to launch a cloud-based version of iTunes that will allow customers to stream their music library directly to their device; meaning that on-device storage can be freed up for things such as apps. While it remains to be seen exactly how similar the two services will be, one thing is for sure: the battle between Apple and its iOS and Google and its Android is about to get even more nasty.

That’s the sound of Verizon’s unlimited Data plans dieing.

I got 100 bucks on Google!

Android has the advantage. All they need to do is hire a front man like Steve Jobs and it’s ‘Game Over’ for Apple. With Chrome OS, Android and every other service offers (and will offer) it’s getting harder and harder for anyone to compete. I love that Android will fragment to low end and high end devices with two distinct platforms, very wise move that others will eventually understand the move soon enough. Skinned themes on low end and purebred on high end devices.

I say Google uses an actual android as their front man.

lol I’ve been saying that for so long…the Indian guy from the Google I/O would be a good front man, he had personality…I’m one of those Android fans who recognizes quality where i see it and to succeed Android has to do a lot of Apple, but with a Google twist…the Google I/O was a good example of this, it was very well done, even when compared to WWDC. But they do need a front man…maybe renamed I/O dude to Stu Work or something…so it has a ring to it.

      I don’t know if recon
Ann Mather is way better looking than Steve Jobs. ;)

The real question is: Who sues who first over copyright/patent/whatever claims?

  • Michael

I’m actually starting to believe google execs are retarded. They’re releasing another android o.s? This is like 20 in 3 years? LOL! Google users don’t even get a chance to use their devices cause they;re to busy installing new o.s’s~

    • El Bobbito

Erm, no. Updates literally take about 10 minutes. All apps are still there, settings and tweaks stay the same… It’s ten minutes to update, which has brought:
      Faster Speeds
      Stability
      Better browsing experience
      Better UI

and what’s the other thing we got via update? Oh yeah, FLASH.

    • Ohholditwithmyrighthand

@michael I love it when people dont know what theyre saying, but run off at the mouth like they have an actual understanding of what they’re saying!!

I expect a lot of negative feedback for this, but I totally agree with you. My phone is still running 1.6 because I’m still waiting for an official update to 2.0 or 2.1. About a few months ago I heard that there is already 2.2 and already 3.0? I like the fact that they’re constantly working to make improvements to the OS, but damn, they’re moving too fast. They’re updating so fast that most users won’t have a chance to experience most of the updates. I will never be able to use all of these updates and that defeats the purpose.

      • @neidlinger.

I agree with you, and i’ll be the first one to tell you to grab the horns of that big ole nasty bull and wrestle the beast to the ground….

there are devices that allow one to put 2.1 onto a 1.6 device…. i did….and many have as well.

      These aren’t BlackBerry devices.

I wouldn’t call this nasty…this will be great for consumers…the more choices, the better.

    • El Bobbito

The news is not, but the battle will be. Apple will undoubtedly sue over something. Fanboys on both sides with have less than entertaining internet fights.

But you are right, it’s great for consumers.

  • Joe C

From what I understand after 3.0 they are moving to a once yearly update like Apple. This battle is great for everyone involved! Do you think apple would give a damn about apple tv if google wasn’t moving into that sector? Good times for android and ios users

  • loki

Streaming music on what network? AT&T? right.

Sorry, but I am accepting the facts as they are now.

If the AT&T network can handle it then it will be the phone that looses the signal. Sorry, tired and fed up with Apple’s and AT&T finger pointing.

  • rctennis

    @david,

Yeah, game over for Apple. Their Apple retail stores, MacBooks, iPods, iPhones, and more won’t save them from google!

    Oh wait..

    • @neidlinger.

Apple can’t even save themselves…. 10% nix on the restocking fee…. if that is their best shot… i hope apple doesn’t bring anything bigger than air soft gun to that gun fight.

    • MicroNix

      @rctennis,

Yeah, just look at Apple’s first attempt to keep up with Google with the iPhone 4. FAIL !

  • Patrick

Good for me. Going to upgrade to a larger phone. And for you people that think it is a bad thing that android OS is evolving so fast…know what you ate talking about first. I love the constant improvements. Each one is better than the last with new features and everything. Don’t be jealous if your OS only updates once a year. Deal with it.

Stream your music instead of download it.

As if carriers didn’t already love Google as it is.

  • Bob

Android is rapidly taking over the low-end and mid-end smartphone market and a bit of high-end market(obviously IPhone 4 rules here) in UK, Australia, Canada etc. The big thing is in all those countries a single phone can work across all networks. And people are used to buying mobile phones from 3rd party retailers. In US people buy stuff from mobile operators and none of them have compatible networks. So you are stuck and mobile operators instead of attracting customers through lower tariffs, better customer service, focus on such anti-consumer stuff like exclusivity. Maybe LTE will change the game and we will have competition in US like in other parts of the world.
