Facebook adds face detection to photo uploads

face-detection

Facebook made tagging and sharing photos easier with its new face detection algorithm, a nifty little feature Facebook acquired when it purchased Divvyshot back in April. No more clicking on photos to select the faces of your friends as the new face detection feature will scan your uploaded photos and automatically select the faces in the photo. Once selected, Facebook will prompt you to tag the photo with the names of your friends.  Though it is somewhat rudimentary in its current form, Facebook promises that improvements are coming down the pipeline. Any Facebookers out there excited by the prospect of click-free photo tagging?

This is cool I kinda reminds me of faces in iPhoto on my MacBook….

Agreed mrmeat! It’s a great idea and I cannot wait to try it out. It will obviously need improvement and help, but that’s why we’re here! :)

I started dreaming of something like this ever since I started using Picasa!

Kinda cool. I’m sure many people will have a use for this feature. I just wish FaceBook would stop displaying a notification icon when I already acknowledged that I had a new like, comment, or message.

I wonder if it does that on photos you upload directly from your iPhone.

Probably going to flop… problem with this kinda software is the accuracy. Especially when a couple friends look like each other, the tagging software on iPhoto for example becomes buggy. I gave up with iPhoto tagging when I realised it couldnt distinguish between by brother and I (not twins and not easily mistaken for one another although you can tell we’re brothers when seen together). I’d imagine facebook software would be nowhere near as good as iPhoto.

this doesn’t detect who the faces are, just that there are faces… basically it saves you the hassle of clicking on people’s faces to bring up the tagging selector.

I hope it still lets you tag things manually though, because I’m a fan of tagging objects, not just faces.

this feature sucks….what happens when i want to take my friend as a breast or a penis?

Sounds similar to what Google is doing with Google Goggles. They have so far left out the face recognition feature possibly due to privacy issues. Think about it, you are in a bar and you take a picture of someone and their name pops up over their head. Wouldn’t bother me but some people get freaked out by this stuff.

It already exists. FaceLook – Face Recognition for iPhone does it.

I’m not excited at all, more like the reverse. You can usually untag photos from your friends, but with face recognition, Facebook can figure out for itself all the images you are really in… I’m sure the intelligence agencies are rejoicing as we strip another layer of privacy away.

    I’m excited
